Hey thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. I liked that advice you left about "is this making me better, or just going through the motions?" I really liked that, i'll remember it tomorrow when i draw. I think it's true that i should maybe lightly use reference a little more. i almost never use ref unless i totally don't know how to draw something. Also, i like that update. The skin tones are looking good, and i know those can often be a challenge. though the right arm has some funkiness going on with it, maybe double check the proportions on that. Other than that, it looks great. i like the linework on the middle sketch, by the way. cheers'

Here's my two cents. I'd love to see you using more time on each piece and push your limits to see how far you can take it. I think you would learn a lot during the process and advance your skills as well.

Bear with me, these are all color corrected photos from my camera, but I wanted to share a few of my traditional pieces from the summer.

Utah suck balls, so I spend most my time using it for the only thing it is good for - All the paintings are gauche and/or watercolor almost all plein aire. (Photo is of me painting literally on top of a cliff we had to rock climb to. My wife hung onto a rock took this while I was painting. Awesome.) Also, remember I only started water media a few months ago, the waterfall I did yesterday, the others are older.

The last painting is a 30" x 30" oil on board, which looks kind of lame in this photo, I'll get a proper one when I can (or learn).

The Self portrait is pencil on bristle board I did today for an hour or so, and the rest of the drawings are photos out of sketchbooks. I have been doing lots of Hogarth, Peck, and Brigman, copies in my various sketch books.

School starts in 3 weeks, I'll get some good scans of stuff then and do a more proper post.

Joe-dizzle You don't need an easel for watercolor or gauche Plus you don't have to mess with terp and lots of towels, and mediums, and cleaning brushes...

Don't get me wrong, I still thoroughly enjoy oils though, I just don't like the hassle when I am going out doors!

I just finished making a velum carbon sheet (Thanks Syd Mead!) and I wanted to test it out, So I used an old (crappy) sketch, and painted it in gauche. 6x9"

I am quite aware that the anatomy sucks ( I did the drawing almost a year ago) , and the perspective is a bit off on the handle. I was trying to focus more on painting technique. Naturally my camera blew it out a bit too.

Thanks for your nice words in my SB, you're absolutely right I noticed that repetition makes "perfect" "good" "great" "better"
and really is the ONLY and BEST way to get ANY better.

Heres some stuff I've been up to lately, Lots and lots of drawing and traditional media to come when I have some time to post.

First two are based on the book (not movies) Starship Troopers, and making them have an "ape" like feel like in the book, as well as being true to the book throughout the design.

The other stuff is from other illustrations I am working on, and the last is a master copy from Ashley Woods.

Nice sketchbook K-bot.

Try to think about what you want to express with your paintings.
Some lack focus in composition and story.
For example the helicopter-soldier-building painting. My eyes go from the heli to the soldier but than keep at the lighted building area. But there is nothing...
In fact there is no hint why the soldiers go down there. No blood, damaged walls, alien glibber or whatever...

Nevertheless i like the last updates a lot!
Keep doing studies of whatever (landscape / characters / lighting / paintings)

Finally, here are 4 plien air watercolors I did in September, usually about an hour or so.

I've been relaxing today and painting fun stuff for me since it's my b-day, so that is why you got such a huge update.

Looking back through my book today, I have to admit I have come a long way. And I still have a long way to go until I can do this for a living, but I will draw and paint my ass off every day until it happens.

Thanks for all your feedback everyone, I take each and every comment to heart, and really try to put them to good use.
