I had surgery the end of September, and am just starting to feel better... LAME

Here is the stuff I have been doing the past week or so. The Troll was an Illustration assignment from the book Harry Potter. The Halo one is another assignment for the same class, and this is just my under painting/comp I'll post the final. The other two are speed painting's half an hour each I did after spending 2 hours scanning and photographing all the stuff today...

UPDATE: I haven't really touched the guy on the right yet, I am trying to establish the level of detail for the main character. I still have a week to go on this, but it is mostly there.

Thanks for the outstanding feedback, I thought that to myself, then my teacher said it, and now you! I will most certainly follow 3 people advice! Once I put some light on the right guy, I mostly just need to noodle small things and add a few more little highlight kicks.

Almost there. I really wish I understood how to fake cast shadows more realistically. I know there is a way to plot them in perspective, but unfortunately, I don't know how it's done

GOAL: Here is my new daily boot camp quota:

1 Head Study - Self portrait, person from life, or photos if needed.
1 Environment Speed Paint - About an hour or less, I also need to start working on more color environments, I am doing to many gray scale, and it's becoming a cop out.
1 Character Speed Paint - About an hour or so again. Color is optional for now, design and drawing is the focus.
1 Hour MINIMUM Drawing on paper - Anything goes, but will be focusing on anatomy, gesture and imaginative drawing.
Weekly Life Drawing - Minimum 1 open life drawing session per week.

That means minimum 4 hours of art a day, lately I have been doing about 14...

So here is a few from this week, at least there is only one way to go from here right?

Great stuff man! Ahhhh I've made schedules like that myself and just havent kept up with it....make sure you write it somewhere like a whiteboard, or have it in a calandar you can tick off haha.

Your doing 14 hours a day! (well with normal life stuff I assume) I kind of wish I didnt work so I could do the same, the art I do at work isnt what I want to improve upon the most. The rock formations are cool, neat quickies. Great job on that halo piece...I didnt play it much (so maybe I just dont understand) but I'm not positive I like the bridge like things coming out of the city on the left? Cheers!

End of November through mid-January: ALL about 1 hour or less.

Lots of studies, trying to make myself paint more color since I am poor at it... Seeing allot of improvement the last 2 months though, wonder if Revelations has anything to do with that?

That WIP of the kiss is really freaking great!

Man, I'm impressed with your improvement. It seemed like in the space of the posts from June of 07 to Nov 07 you took art pills and got good. Nice work.

My only crit on the piece above would be frame composition. Putting the kiss right in the center of the canvas really hurts this otherwise beautiful piece. Try moving it to the left and let the dude fade into more black on the right. Keep your sig where it is so that helps "balance" the piece a little bit. Otherwise nicely done. (Maybe just a little more definition on his hand since it directly leads from the focal point and the eye will go to it right away.)

First three are hour long speed paints and the last one is DSG 1336: Sci-Fi: BATTLE-WORN CRUSTACEOUS ROBOT aslso about an hour.

I had to drop a word of encouragement after seeing how dedicated you are. Your military discipline is really paying off. I envy your latent talent, as even your starting point isn't as bad as I think you feel it is.
Crits:
I think you make good use of atmospheric perspective(it's a strong point), though sometimes I wonder if you use it to hide information instead of just to inform the viewer? Also, on your cowboy piece, there seems to be a disconnect in the moment of the rider and the victim, the victim's gun is already in motion, but it looks as if the rider's pistol is still firing... unless you intend this to be follow up shots? It feels unnatural to me. Maybe a smoking gun instead? In any case, I like the piece.. maybe scale up the rider's hand+pistol to give a better sense of depth, too?

Lovely color pallet for the castle, it gives it a very classic/welcoming feel.
