    Wink Sketchbook of the Jakhalz

Hi my name is Joost van Kempen, and Im from Holland 19 Years old.
The reason why I choose this site was simply because of the good talent and nice styles.

I was drawing as far as I can remember and always got reactions of people like: ''You didnt draw this'' or ''You should do something with this''. Once at school my art teacher gave me an 4.5 out of 10 because he didnt believe I drew it

I dont got many drawings scanned now cause if lost most of my best ones but I made a quick drawing yesterday. Its nothing big cause I drew it in 40 minutes and on a chair cause I dont got a good desk in my room but anywayz its just a little thingy to show little sample:

    Sorry for the bad scan

    [B]OLD DRAWINGS WARNING

*EDIT: Added a newer drawing here to get a better thumbnail for this thread

    Hi Joost!
Don't worry about comments! They'll come when you start posting more and more. Believe me I can know.
That thing about the teacher giving you a 4,5 is really awfull! But kinda funny as well hihi. At least it says you did quite a lot better than he expected?
So what education are you following right now?

About the first drawing/sketch.. Yeah that's quite nice, I think you should scale it down a bit so we can have some overview. I didn't really see what it was until I opened it in a separate window and it scaled down.
The lines are very neat, I like that, but the weird proportions bother me a bit, that waist is just so thin! And it looks like he would fall backwards, standing like that. But ofcourse it's clearly a creature from your imagination so you can make the proportions as weird as you want hihi ^^

Oh, make sure you check out the "Netherlands" thread in Lounge -> CA Local Artist Groups subforum.
    Now draw more and update!
    Love,
    Marleen (fellow dutchie ^^)

Thx for the comments! It made me want to draw another one. The first one was rotated and way to big, (as you could see) so thats fixed now in this new piece.

please comment! Even if it sucks

not bad man lolz i get that sumtimes people dont believe what i draw heh any way some tips and or so you call it c+c

your shading is just in remote spots making those spots recede and teh sading along the outline of the figure dont do that shade everything makes the overall quality much better

Thanks for the comment man. If you ask me what I dont like about this piece, (I ALWAYS got something I dont like about my drawings) are the legs. Cause the legs I find pretty boring to draw, and mostly I draw them too quick because of that.

Just keep on practising the anatomy. I would suggest using live models or a few more references as some of the muscle groups appear out of place (just find some bodybuilding pics online, like at www.classicbodybuilders.com).

Otherwise, good imagination and nice clean style.

Watch the balance, in post #5 he's going to fall to our right. Usually it helps to draw a line from the neck straight down, where the line ends should be the one foot where the weight is on, or it should be in between the two feet if there's weight on both feet.

Nice clean drawings!. I agree with the comments made above

    Stylized to say the least.

What I would suggest to clean the art up a bit is pretty simple. When it comes to your art you have a tendency to be a bit too busy. By this I that it's a little difficult to really see what it is that I am looking at. I presume alot of this comes from no line variance throughout the image. While I can appreciate the hard lines for the power they create, try doing a few pieces with some variation in intensity and see how it turns out!

    PS: Great start
He who asks is a fool for five minutes,
but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

    Starting over.

Thanks for all the comments! I will experiment with lighter lines, but I know thats not my style and I think it wont get that solid look then.

@Marleen:you mean post 7 right? He's leaning with his head a bit to the left... I dont know how you could see he will be falling to the right

You have some cool stuff happening here, but you should try deviate from the same themes. Its not often you will see big-macho-muscled robots/men/monsters, try learning some realistic basics, observe your surroundings and people around you. Experiment and have fun. If you keep sticking to one theme, you'll end up drawing like DBZ

Perhaps you are right but I would never want to make fully realistic drawings, cause their boring to me. I will surely keep a comic style in every work.

But I will make some humans soon. ;P

welcome to the boards dejakhalz. you have some nice stuff here, often with some good line qualities.

as far as drawing "fully realistic drawings", i've often been told that you have to know the rules in order to break them.

    keep it up!

No comments doésn't mean your stuff is bad, it just means nobody bothered to post something. If you really want comments you can try to give some useful crits in other peoples sketchbooks, usually people return the favour.

    Now here are some crits:
    - On Post #22, I really like what you did with the upper body, but the way the legs are bent bother me a bit, I can't quite put my finger on it, but something in the way that the knees are bent bothers me. Maybe it's the foreshortening.
    - On post #23, hell, I'm really liking that one. Nice figure! As for crits: determine if the guy is turned a bit to our right, or looking straight at us.. Draw a center line and see if the proportions of the left and right side are allright. To me it looks like the left (our left) side is a lot bulkier than the right side, so it looks like the right side is foreshortened a bit and therefor appears smaller, but if he would be turned to the right, the right (our right) foot would be a bit up and turned as well, but that isn't the case.
    - I really like the arm studies in post #25, nice muscles ^^ The skull looks a bit skewed. Mainly because of the long distance from mouth to nose, and because the eyes don't seem to be in the center of the face.

so those were my cits I hope they were of any help
good luck practicing for your German exam. Damn I really sucked at that language, I dropped it as soon as I could.
    Love
    Marleen

Some good stuff here but i advise you to keep doing studies, your stuff will be far stronger when your anatomy knowledge improves. Try find a life drawing class somewhere in your local area. Dont be afraid to use references for drawings aswell, its not cheating.

Maybe try put some values down digitally on some of these or some new stuff. You're alot better than i was at 19, just keep working mate. Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook also, much appreciated.

I especially like the detailing in post #23! Hmm, if you have trouble with legs, then you could study them with reference. Just drawing them from photos and other pictures and such. It can be a big help! Or you can look at your own legs in a mirror and see how they look at different angles/in different poses.
