Lately I am practicing the most difficult animal of all: the horse.
Doing a lot of measurements and different studys to get a better grasp on the shape and proportions. Now I started to get into a 3dimensional view and using colors. On the next ones I will try to get a hold of the muscles and how to paint the actual form and shape realistical. Not to mention the head.

    http://me-artbook.blogspot.com/2011/...terlocors.html

I did some more watercolors, different papers with different texture and weight.
Although I like the ultra realistic dinosaur illustrations from some books, like dinotopia (I think he uses oils) or nature books, this way to do it is quite nice too. I want to get more used to watercolors, its still pretty tricky.

    This one was really retro-inspired:

I really like what you have going on here! The watercolours especially are very nice, I find them much stronger than your digital paintings. Have you tried a similar approach as with the watercolours but in digital? Also, are they all from imagination? Where did you learn to paint dinosaurs? Sorry, for all the questions, but I find your work quite interesting.

    @Andrew:
Thats not a problem at all, just ask what you like.

I too have the feeling that I am more easy with watercolors than with digital medias. The reason for that may be, that the palet and ways to do things are way more limited, but in the same moment, I can directly see, what I get.

Bringing this to digital paintings may be possible, but tricky. I already tried to reduce my brushstrokes, but it always ends up as a big search for the values and so on. Which usually feels kinda sloppy. ^^° It looks so easy when others do it, but for me it doesnt work so well.

    To your questions:
I searched for some refs, the Coelophysis had a bone drawing from a book as base, same with the Carnotaurus. I just moved the limps a little more. ^^
For the others I looked up different books, illustrations or movies to get a feeling for the body. Especially the Triceratops is kinda difficult to paint.
On some parts, like the Brachios legs, I looked up some fotos of elephants.

And how I learned it ? Basically like everything else, looking in museums, books, studying animals in the overall and prctice, practice, practice. ^^

    Glad you liked it, Fniss.

Ok, I tried to adapt the stile I use in watercolors into digital painting.
Needs a lot of concentration to keep it up, but it worked.

    What do you think?

Edit:Right now I am amazed by the works of John Gurche and Raul Martin. I dont know how or with what they paint, but the realism is just brilliant.

Wowza. You've got great animal water colors, and I like the dinos a lot. It'd be cool to see more of the humans facing off with dino's theme. Keep working on the portraits. Maybe you could try drawing some people you know or some strangers?

    @Mohki:
Thanks, basically, I am doing portrait drawings for a local poolhall on some weekends. But the pictures are given away as presents, so I cant show any of them. XD Yea, I definately want to go back on the old dino vs human pics, maybe I redo them in watercolors. ^^

I think I will try to get my hands on bigger paper. That should improve my picture quality as well. That andmaybe adding Gouache or Acryl. I would love to get my hands on an airbrushset as well, but they are quite expensive.

Interesting: Yesterday I thought, that you cant paint that realistically with watercolors and today I took out a book about John Howe from my bookshelf XD
    Inspiring as always.

Some studys of running birds to get some better feeling of the legs. Especially those of 2 legged carnivores give me a lot of problems.

Oh god. If I had a book of those dinosaurs in them when I was little, I would undoubtly be drawing dinosaurs forever. Your watercolours are A+ and makes me wish I never stopped using them :<

The textures...it makes me want to touch my screen D: Inspiring stuff.

@Trisscar: Strange... I have the same problem now. I used the attach-option for most of them... maybe they remove pics from time to time ?
Or maybe therer are some server problems... If it doesnt change I will ask an admin.

EDIT: Seems to be a problem in the whole forum. At least I cant see any pics that have been attached.

    News: http://me-artbook.blogspot.com/

This time a collection of horse studys I did over a period of time.
Some more methodical with measurements and so on. Then with form and shape and different medias and ways to get a feeling for it. As you can see not always with succes.
If horses are even slightly wrong they start to look pretty creepy and strange. ^^

My refs consist of books, photos and videos from the net, sometimes movies, other artists and when I can find the time I visit the local museum to look through the arsenal of padded animals or the zoo.
Lucky me, I have some good connections

    The troll piece again:
I focussed on the overall feeling of the picture, but for the next time I should pay some more attention to the anatomy. ^^
