Lokklyn has shiny sketches [June 12 update]

edit: GEEZ, it's almost been a year since my first post. I think I've improved!

Hi. I'm an animation student attending UMBC. I love painting though, and I need to supplement my school's lack of an illustration program with my own stuff. I think I'd prefer to go into concept art/texturing rather than 3D modeling or animating.. motion graphics is also very appealing to me. But ultimately, I want to be an illustrator of some kind. Animation is just a backup.

Trying to make the transition from an animeish style to something more universally appealing. I basically can't show most potential employers the stuff I sell at conventions. (if you're curious, my full gallery, anime stuff included, is in my DeviantArt gallery: http://lokklyn.deviantart.com)

I plan to use this sketchbook to hopefully document my growth, and will upload WIPs and doodles and the like.

one last thing i did while avoiding an essay. going to maybe work on it more. experimenting wtih a hard tinting brush in painter.

speed paint - 15-20 mins max. i was doing this in class instead of paying attention T_T with a mouse in photoshop. i did a little bit of work when i got home on the head since i'm really bad at doing anything precise with the mouse. there's something about the photoshop low-opacity paintbrush look that i'm not sure how to reproduce in painter.

The work you have posted here is pretty, but it doesn't seem varied enough to suit your needs.

oh man, I've been so busy at school. haven't had much time for personal projects.

even though i should definitely be working on final projects, i wanted to finish a personal project first.

i saw this weird pattern in the stucco on my wall that looked kind of like a woman's profile with another lady clinging to her neck, so i tried to recreate it. I'm not sure if I should make the tiny lady a little bigger so you can see the detail. she seems kind of out of place, so i'm trying to figure out how to make her look more integrated. suggestions are welcome.

The last update looks finished. Maybe some more work on the small girl on the side. Her butt/dress could maybe be better somehow. I love the the image anyway.

First piece I finished on my new tablet, hooray! I'm happy with it. I should probably get into the habit of using references more often, as this pose was appropriated from a girly magazine advertisement. :d
I'm hoping to draw more than just pretty ladies.. seems like every time i start to sketch, that's what i want to create.

school has me busting my ass, but i'm taking this great video game class- so i had the excuse to come up with a concept for a thief/assassin female.
i like argyle. i'm going to be modeling her- but i'm not that strong of a modeler, so wish me luck T_T

something i felt like doing at 4 am - i'm probably 4 hours into this one. but i feel like i've made huge progress since last semester, even though i haven't been drawing as much as i should have.

I love the way you do your portraits! I think it's the high contrast style with bold colors that appeals to me so much. They really glow. Beautiful work.

After a portfolio review at Big Huge Games, it became pretty apparent that I need to work on my environments. still not the master at them, but definitely getting better. i posted them in the order that i finished, and have noticed some real improvements in the span of like, a month. trying to work myself into the industry this summer. it's a real challenge!

also tossed in some random concept of elemental titans- trying to put an original twist on a cliché. not a really refined piece (I probably should have started at a bigger resolution lol).

starting to paint a little more in photoshop, but i'm still mostly used to Painter.

So, in recent events:
I became an art intern at BreakAway games! This involves doing some concept work, YAY! But it's kind of a mishmash of duties.. Whatever I'm needed for - this can include cleaning up UVs, texturing, modeling, re-skinning weights.. etc, etc.

alsoooo I get reimbursed for nude model sessions, AWESOME. They're 3hrs each week.. here's the result of my first live model. It's a little loose. Haven't bothered cleaning it up. About 2.5 hours.
this was the second time i've ever had a nude model. :o it's kind of astounding the difference a real life reference makes for my art.
