Johanson's Book 2-24: VOLTRON Painting

Figured it was time to try another one of these sketchbook threads. Went out and picked up one of those little 5 by 8 books to carry around with me. I haven't posted a pic on CA since the attachment manager went into general use... so please bear with me if I have a few hiccups.

Was looking around for something else to throw in here. Found my thunderdome pieces from the last LMS and thought, eh, why not.

The last piece with the explorer droping in on some giant skeletons is banging. I didnt event notice the shadowy figure until i had looked at the rest of the image. That really blew me away how fast the scale changed in my mind. excellent work

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I think I have progress shots for the thunderdome pieces around somewhere. Maybe I'll try and find them to post. But for right now, just a few more sketches. Heavy Alan Lee influence on this first one.

Lil painter sketch. Just found a headset for our house phone tonight. Now I can talk to family AND sketch at the same time. This is going to change my life (not really, but hey, I'm excited).

Wow, I never saw your last thunderdome piece... It's really amazing!! To who did you lose?
Also I really like your sketches, they have some sort of cute factor in a lot of rhem You should pay some more attention to your pencil ánd digital sketches, I think that would improve them lots.
And you said in my sketchbook that you should do more studies... So I'm telling you now: Do more studies !

Marleen: Thank you very much. Yeah, in that last thunderdome round I lost to pretty much everybody (and rightly so). And as for the studies... yeah, no joke. There's a figure drawing class at a museum near by that I'm going to try to get into for their next term. But I should be doing more studies on my own too.

mrpank: Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying them so far.

GriNGoLoCo: Man, writing out your CA name really exercises the shift key fingers. I wasn't familiar with Otto Dix until you mentioned him. Just checked him out. Thanks, I dig the drawings from his New Objectivity years (as they put it on his site) the most.

AdamDillabo: Thanks! That drawing was a recent "crazy bored in airport" sketch. Glad you liked it.

My soon to be wife is a big fan of Mignola's version of Hecate. So, I've been thinking of getting her to pose for an oil painting on the subject. It should be fun. I'm just starting to figure out some basic composition stuff in my tiny sketchbook. The painter sketch was just going to be of trees, but then I thought eh, why not throw in a snake-lady for good measure.

This is so good. I'm just wondering though, why is the guy so so tiny compared to the skeleton? Is it supposed to be a giants throne room or something like that?

28chelseaslater: Thanks, and yeah, you're right. It is supposed to be an ancient throne room of giants. The extra little bit of story I was hoping to get in there was that they died due to some mysterious power from within the box on the pedistal... but I don't really think that part worked too well.

Ovad: Thanks! I'm glad you like it. I grew up around lots of trees but for some reason now live where there are None. I've been drawing a lot more trees as a result.

Really awesome stuff in here. I like that one of the giant skeletons a lot. It was so weird how the scale changed once I saw the tiny human figures. Keep it up man!

ItalianHorsey: Hey, thanks. That one was a lot of fun to do. Those three were for the last big thunderdome. I've been away from the site for a while and was bummed to see that I missed out on entering the newest last man standing. That's what I get for being lazy.

Update on that last super quick sketch. I think I might keep rolling on this one.
