A quick sketch in class becomes first speed paint

I sketched the first drawing while in my history of modern art class for a class exercise. I started painting it and before I know it about an hour passes by.

Yes that is a photograph in the background, because it was required to use one for the project. Everything that is painted is the drawing and good ol brushes. I dont know if I should finish it though.

I am proud of this one because my confidence in painting is not too good, this was a mile stone for me. Don't let that mean, I don't want honest crits. There are many things I don't like about it, and some weaknesses that are annoying to me. Such as me not realizing, until a friend brought it to my attention, that the sparks are green! *sigh* Anyway...

No one wrote here so maybe I'll try.
In this speedpainting everything I see is black + highlights which makes the whole picture hard to read. You have chosen really difficult light position and mood. Maybe try covering the lines with new layer and paint simplified shapes first. It will be easier to put light and shadow. Go into detail when you feel that all the volumes are well defined.
    Hope that makes sense .
For such moods you could try studying De La Tour. He's very good in painting really dark scenes. Like those here.
