"Modern Computer Witch" Revised at bottom of thread

    Hello All,

This is kind of a follow up to another piece I had done a while back which had a similar "magazine cover" look to it. Originally the subhead on this read: For the seafood lover in all of us. But I decided to change it, TMI for my young ones.

All comments and crits welcome. Hope you enjoy it.

P.S. No, she is not Ariel all grown up.

The only thing I dislike is her tailfin, it looks to flimsy for swimming to me. I'd suggest reducing the transparency or adding some hint of muscle to it.

I like the colors you've used.

    Hi Jose,

the painting is a fine rendering, anatomy seems to be o.k. though I´m with posessed about the fin that´s looking a bit too flimsy. I personally don´t like the sea-shells on her nipples. They look pasted on for decencies sake - she doesn´t wear anything else, why is she wearing them? I´d go for barebreasted though I understand that this isn´t an option for a magazine in more prude countries like the US. Maybe another pose where she hides the nipples would have made the picture more "believable".

From a conceptual point of few there are some questions to me: You called this pic "modern mermaid" but I see nothing modern in it. Everything´s calling out antiquity; the torn paper, the rusty anchor and the 19th century typography. Even the concept of the mermaid itself isn´t something new but in the proven design. Furthermore it isn´t clear if she´s under water or above. The background in the circle says under water, the lighting of her says above, in pure daylight.

Anyway really nice drawing - it´s easier to crit if there are just a few things .

like flipse I don't know why you called it modern// are you sure you didn't do a redesign of WD little mermaid?
The shells ain't working for me too.

Give her some gadgets of drowned sailors, sunken ships from modern times.
Then the modern would make more sense to me.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the looking and the comments all excellent observations. I agree with the tail crit, I should have given her tail some firmer spines or something.

The original assignment was to create a mermaid on an anchor, without many other stipulations, other than it would be used in several markets and had to be somewhat family friendly. That's why I had to cover her breasts.

I added the magazine look as an afterthought, to try and tie it back to a previous image I had created. The title is a play on the real magazine "modern woman" which actually doesnt look very modern if you see it. The magazine could have been modern 500 years ago in Mermaid eras, or something like that.

Thanks again for looking and posting well thought out comments, I appreciate it.

More polished version of Modern Computer Witch entry...

    Hello All,

Here is a more finished version of my Modern Computer Witch Thunderdome entry (I had some time between projects so I thought I would spend some time with her). I had a lot of fun and learned a thing or two, I wish I had more time to play like this...

All comments and crits welcome. Thanks for looking.

ok, my only concern with that piece is the pentagramapple (hehehehhe). i cant even look at that thing without giggling to myself like a little girl. its just going to far... into the realm of being a joke. i get the impression that you aren't making fun of witches or whatever, but thats what it feels like you're doing. not to mention the fact that the pentacle is drawn in a very specific way, each movement has meaning and you've taken out most of those movements. i dunno... just a thought.

First one is very nice, only that chain looks a bit too computer rendered... but mermaid looks awesome.
As my artist's statement explains, my work is utterly incomprehensible and is therefore full of deep significance.

complete2-I'm glad you got a good laugh out of it! I didnt mean it as a joke, not really anyway. If there were computer witches, I reasoned they wouldnt use the same stuff the majority of people use (PCs) since they are in the minority themselves. I did toy with the idea of putting an image of Bill Gates as Satan in the background but that would have made it too much of a joke and I didnt want to spend the time either.

MrozekArt-Thanks! I liked the chain when I first rendered it but I have since found some flaws. I still like the mermaids face. Thanks for looking.

    The mermaid one is beautiful...

I love the pentagrapple (?) =D Very clever. Her eyes seem a little too widely spaced, or like they're looking off in different directions...

I like them both. Very good composition and content.

I did have to have a little chuckle about the pent-iGram along with complete2 and I think (s)he [can't damned well tell from the profile grrrr] is right. It looks a little too machine like on the shoulder. The tattoo should have been a bit more "earthy", but the one on the computer is spot on.

Thanks thundercake and Sleepy_Head. You guys are right about the tattoo and her eye. I did distort and fade the tattoo when I put it on her but obviously not enough. Thanks for the feedback.
