so, if for you art has no rules, how about defying art from your point of view for a start

No I think art has rules - or at least guidelines - alright, and that's what separates good art from bad art. But you need to know the rules before you break them.
To me one of the most important things about art is that the journey never ends. We will always be students and we will always need to keep learning to be able to consider ourselves artists. Just before his death at the age of 92, Picasso remarked that only then was he beginning to understand what this is all about. That's the man who almost single handedly changed the way we view art.

What I mean is there are rules (or, more correctly, guidelines) which you must learn and once you've done that, you can (if you want to) start bending and breaking those "rules" in effective ways. Well that's my opinion in any case. Hope that answers your question dudeOriginally Posted by Zaknafain

I think the most important thing about art is communication.
Judging from some of the replies so far, this topic could spin off in any number of directions, but I'll try to stay true to the original question.....
In my opinion, the most important thing about art is that it evokes some sort of feeling or emotion, one way or the other. Surely art without feeling is the biggest waste. When I go to a gallery, or even browse online galleries, I want to feel something.

. As many artists do, I believe art is the visual language, and the object of any language is to communicate.

"The most important thing about art" is public funding.
the most important thing about art, is the one viewing it.
It's fun.

other than perfecting my personal disciplines and working on managing my errors that I make in the creation of the idea of beauty, which is fun in and of itself(to challenge one-self to create) is the ever present form that I try to represent in the given thought ... and it's representation

It's my way to "feel/know" that I am connected to the greater whole. These days I am working with the community, with school kids, to help place paid artists/art teachers in the local elementary schools.
This feels like the most important thing I can do to help create the future.

ON THE OTHER HAND, on many an occasion though i'v found myself drawn to a paticular song or story not so much for the meaning the band or author was tryin to convey but because of the interpretation that I've derived, whether or not it was the ORIGINAL intention.Originally Posted by Brendan N

The fun-factor is most important to me. I wouldn't even do art if it was boring.
