uhhh. gulp. WOW.
inspirational to say the least.
I know this must vary with each painting, but how long do does it take for you to finish one piece. Say for one of those character turnarounds? Just curious.
Are you given strict timelines for each days work?

I hate to say it.......but some of these concepts take weeks to finalize. I must have drawn that COG 30 times before I got the final design. It was a long process.
I am given my schedule at the beginning of a project and as long as I keep up with the artists needing the concepts I am not really micromanaged on a daily basis.
I definitely take my time these days and try to get the design as close to perfect as I can.
Wow, incredible stuff. I still have some of your work from way back on the GT forum days. This stuff is pretty amazing. I'd love to see your process on these. Very very cool. Great game also.
thanks Hawkprey
that actually makes me feel a little better. Seeing some of these posts, whether from you or the other pros here, it's sometimes hard to sense how long it takes to create them.

lovely concepts! and it is so cool you can have a week or so for a concept, i barely have one day
anyway, show us more, we know there are MORE!![]()
Ya I used to take alot of pride in how fast I was..............
With Gears it was more quality over quantity. It was really tough to change gears (no pun intended) and really think about every nut and bolt in a concept instead of throwing a bunch of concepts against a wall and seeing what sticks. I also build and animate all my concepts in 3D so it adds to my total concept time. Hopefully it is saving time for the modellers and animators further down the line.
Its definitely not a functional pipeline for most game companies, but we have honed it to perfection here at Epic.
I will say that the Locust Heavy Weapon and Sonic Device were done one day each.......and the Junker was a day and a half........but I did them at the end of the project and had a better feel for what the game was about.
Downright incredible! Awesome stuff man. I especially like those tech concepts.
hawk you are my new inspiration. Truly amazing stuff you got here.

awesomeawesome!
Beautiful stuff man! Nice to see it all collected in one thread.
So I'm curious - How art-directed were you on these concepts? It seems to me like they pretty much gave you free reign to go nuts, and really develop your vision for the game.
I can't wait to see what you have in store for us for GOW 2.
What happened to Bucket head? Great stuff man. Those designs really made the game.
Mandryk..........good question
I worked pretty closely in the beginning with Jerry Oflaherty, Chris Perna, and Cliffy B to get the look and feel of the first COG character and weapon. They really defined the way the good guy team would look so it was a long process.
After I nailed them, I was pretty much given carte blanche to come up with whatever I wanted as long as it fit Cliffys design and the tech of the COG.
Chris Perna and Kevin Lanning had already designed the locust character when I started. So I just needed to draw creatures that fell in line with him. Again I was given pretty much free reign.
It was a really fun process without alot of the back and forth bullcrap that most game concepting entails.
Hooks
The buckethead was a kickass design by Lee Perry........I think it got the axe because it didnt fit into the story after all was said and done.
DOOD!, you win okay, there I said it you WIN!!!!!!! are you happy now... FUCK!
I guess its about that time to pursue my dream of becoming a singer. I QUIT!
