    Jacqs' Sketchbook Journey: Critique Wanted!

    Hi all,

I'm an sophmore illustration major at RISD, and for the past year or so I've hit a hard wall in terms of art; I just feel like I haven't made any major improvements in awhile, and I feel like I have a lot to learn (especially in digital painting/painting in general); so I will use this site to chart my progress, develop my painting skills, and learn lots from you guys (Everyone on this site is so incredible!). Please give me critique/advice on how to keep improving! I would love to hear any suggestions you have

Here's Digital painting study I did a month ago inspired by the photoshop digital painting tutorial thread on here. don't have much confidence in digital painting at this point. Here's a study I did of an apple about a month ago.

Went to a figure drawing session with my tablet today. Was a really interesting experience. At first it was hard to get used to life-drawing with the tablet, but by the end of it I felt like I got the hang of it, and I used color for the last pose. Throughout the session, I was focused on defining major masses and planes of value. I'm definitely going to bring it to the next session on tuesday, and then on wednesday, and I hope that I can refine my drawings more. The drawings below range from quick gestures to 20 minute poses.

wanted to try my hand at more dynamic digital illustration,. Here's the final product, which I still want to work back into.

Ideally, I'd like it to achieve this level of refinent in this image, which i'm totally inspired by: http://rye-bread.deviantart.com/#/d46fa67

Also, does anyone have any good advice how to digitally paint from imagination? I'm fine doing it with traditional medias, but really struggle when it comes to the computer.

    hey there!

Wasn't able to post for awhile because of laziness/school craziness but I will be more regular in my posting (1x every other day). I did some figure studies yesterday out of the Famous Artist course and Hogarth's book. I'm pretty rusty because I haven't been drawing much since I started this big oil painting. I still need to hold off on details and focus on drawing through my simple forms, and hands! hands need a lot of work.

Qustion for anyone that's looking: a lot of the books I read reccomend making conci shapes forms to develop a good vocabulary for drawing the body from your head, but I find that this method is really impractical when I'm actually drawing from life. What's your guys' experience?
