Alright it's time to put up a sketchbook.
Here's my story. I seriously started drawing september 2006, before that I just did some doodles once in a while. So you can say I'm still a noob at all this

I never realized you can actually become an great artist if you just have the right motivation, dedication and are willing to work your ass off.
The last couple of weeks I started with anatomy studies so you can expect lots of studies

I'll update this sketchbook every week.

Be sure to give crits because thats why I started this sketchbook in the first place!

I'm learning where the muscles attach on the bones in order to have a good understanding of how to draw the arm.

first off, congrats with the sketchbook here - some nice drawings I hadn't seen yet - anyway, just two comments :p

First: still love the machines you draw, they rule - but (sowwy) I would change the exhaust-flame or whatever to call it in English (uitlaatgas-spul:p) into a something more "cleaner" version - I've noticed this before in class but never thought of it when I spoke to ya later on ...

Secondly: this one is about the anatomy - love the ladies btw , but about the faces you drew in the Vilppu head studies-post; try to work on them a bit more - can't say I'm an expert though, but they seem a bit wrong to me alltough I can't point out where exactly...

But in general: keep 'm coming mate and see ya laters :p

About your figures, im guessing you`re gonna go so damn fast with those as well. Especially once you figure out how to apply your sense for perspective with poses. Cool!

i really enjoy a lot of the mech/vehicle/ship designs that you have. clean work. asformentioned,like to see how to develop! re: your figure work, studies are coming along. i would like to see how your marks you have shown us from your industrial work translate into figure. right now, the line weight seems a bit random/rough whereas in your industrial work, it depicts shadow and weight...... same applies to me...hee

I suspect that drawing some totally different stuff would help you get more "cool" designs. You being the industrial draftsman and all should be able to apreciate the work 'Luigi Colani" did. That guy said he just looks at nature for his design and solutions.

I agree with Banshax. Nature is a good source for subjects. A lot of good Industrial designs reflect nature. Just look at the new Mazda flow concept!

@Banshax: Thx for the name, he did some really organic designs, good stuff. I'll propably should look more at nature. Thx for the tip.

@Anurizm: I suggest to draw some basic perspective shapes first and make them more complex each time. A really good dvd I recommend is the lectures of Scott Robertson.

And for detail I sometimes look at military vehicles and stuff, just search google for airplanes and things like that. Good luck

@mentler: Thx but I really need to improve alot on my vehicles. I dont have many problems with perspective but my designs are sometimes just plain normal. Need to build op my visual library I guess

I know my figure work is not as good But I think I'm getting a grip at it, even if its just a little. I'm watching Vilppu wich is really helpfull and I'm reading those small books of bridgman. I find figure work and industrial design work really different for some reason.

And I got a signature in my sketchbook from the legendary Syd Mead I got to meet him in person at the Brussels International Festival Of Fantastic Film. We talked about Art Center College Of Design in Pasadena, the school I want to attend next year, he gave me his phone number and said to call him if I would move to Pasadena next year. His studio is in Pasadena CA in case people are wondering why he gave me his phonenumber :p
Now how cool is that!

Thx chromosome. And Syd Mead is really a nice guy, I'm planning on buying his books, most of them are out of print unfortunately. His art is really some of the most inspiring things ive seen.

I have done some robot design studies the last 2 days. Posting here some results. I'm not happy with the overall design in the end but It was an assignment and didnt had enough time to push the design.
Everything done with markers and a faber-castell pen.

three-quarter view. Actually this was a study for correct perspective and details, thats why some parts are unfinished like the arm etc..
not sure if I'm gonna do a finished perspective drawing of this one because like I said, I dont like the overall design.
But I definitely gonna do another design anytime soon.

your industrial designs are getting more interesting in their structure. i particulary like post 14/row 1/4th bot. the last one has a good face but the torso/shoulder seems a little slim relative to the legs and is throwing off the balance of the design. otherwise, great marker/ink work...very envious. also, as i am sure that you are well aware of, here is a vehicle artist to pay attention to and for inspiration:

Syd Mead in Brussels?! Damn ! I completely missed that.

Your ship thumbs are definately the strongest here.
I would suggest looking into Feng Zhu's designs if you're not already
familiar with them. And take a look at the dvd's he made.
He goes in depth about the process of making interesting robot shapes
and designs. Something you need to work on.
Don't go into detail too much in the thumbnail stages. Concentrate on
getting an
interesting shape first and then build on that.
Remember you can never turn a bad drawing or design good, by rendering.

Hi there! Your recent posts show alot of strength, and I especially like the full body mechanical renderings. The good thing about your designs is that they appear to be functional, or have the illusion to be functional, which is good. The bolts and springs add to that touch of realism to your parts. Pen is definitely a good medium to use, it gives a very clean result to your rendering. Keep it up, mechanical objects and droids are definitely your strengths (and my downfall hahaha). I recommend taking a look at Luigi Colani, his designs are smooth, and very sexy-looking, and is really interesting to see. Instead of having sharp angles, everything is really circular and smooth in his designs.

Your stuff is getting stronger all the time man. The hard work is showing. Not a crit just a tip, try drawing your ships & ID's from left to right also, not just the same direction.

What was Syd Mead like? He's an amazing designer.
A quick question do you draw in pencil first, then markers then pen?

If you haven't looked at Doug Chiangs stuff he's really good, as is Ralph McQuarrie, check them out dude!

@hardsoapscum: Yeah Daniel Simon is great, superb, fantastic His designs are way to good. As for the robot, he is indeed way out off balance. I'm not gonna fix it though, just a lesson I learned to pay more attention to mechanics, overall balance and look, etc.. I'll prolly do some in depth studies for robots in the next few weeks, now I'm doing some studies about architecture and shot design. thx for the reply.

@Art_Addict: I'm looking at Feng his stuff all the time man I watched all of his dvds wich I learned alot of. You have a good point there, I'm going into detail way to soon. I watched his dvd and you really can't just do what he does. He explained his technique etc but the most important thing is finding balance and finding great shapes and concepts for a robot. Before I can come up with so many cool designs I have to build up my visual library and build up some mileage. The perspective is not longer the great problem I'm facing, I still need lots of practice on perspective though but thats not longer the great issue here, the overall design is..

@amer-nazri: I looked at Luigi Colani his designs before wich are a great inspiration. My stuff need to look more functional, more, more, always more thx for replying.

@ATAnderson: Also a good point, I already started doing that I'm doing some avation art when I'm bored with other stuff so expect airplanes flying all over the place

@spacemanyuri: Syd Mead is a great guy, his skills are beyond fantastic, a great inspiration to us all. I got an email from him few days ago to meet him at his studio in california, so I'll prolly visit him one day.
In most of these sketches I never use a pencil, unless I'm not sure where I'm going then I can always erase. Next you can choose, first marker then pen, or first pen then marker depends on how confident you are. If you go with marker first you can always correct yourself with pen after.

I have a pretty huge list with concept designers so I know these guys from the star wars movies. Great designers

The thing that keeps me busy these days are environments. Did a few pages with some basic shot design stuff first. I did some thumbs and now I'm reading some books about architecture to find some interesting stuff that might help me with designing buildings and interieurs. Also composition is really important but not easy.
