Two more paintings, both works in progress.
Landscapes this time. Both acrylics on paper, about A4 size.
    Dinosaurs will return soon...

update 2 october: finished the 1st landscape
update 3 october: finished (well, done with it anyway, the 2nd landscape)
Good practice. Apparently painting water is quite the pain.
Did not pull it off yet, but I learned something.

Nothing much to show today, only a few sketches of migs after pics on the internetz.
I keep telling other people that it's good to start to learn to draw stuff you don't really like as well.
Time to back that up. Vehicles/machines was never high on my list, so there you go.

And another one, last one for now, giganotosaurus skull.
    acrylics on paper, ~20x30cm

I also added some splashes on the mosasaur piece because the bottom half was too empty
and because, well, it was a swimming reptile after all.
I dunno I'm not sure. Part of me likes it. Part of me feels I kind of ruined it though.

Maybe I should have tested the effects I had in mind on a separate piece of paper.

blurp.. some fantasy stuff this time.
A character I'm making for a friend of mine and a personal fantasy landscape.
I'm trying to make it interesting. Sometimes feel as if I'm hardly growing at all.
Ah well f*ck it must make more stuff.

I guess that feeling is based on the tiny improvements over time that feel as if hardly anything is happening.
But looking back over the past few years in this sketchbook, I can clearly see I've improved...well, a tiny bit. lol.

Thanks Trisscar! Glad you like 'em.
    Dinosaurs are of course, awesome.

I've started two more landscape studies in acrylics (reffed from photographs found on ....(I'll look it up)
These two are kind of frustrating me atm, but I'll fight through them in the coming days.

Some drawings for a tryout animation I'm trying to develop with a couple of friends.
(this is just tiny, 3 frames, handdrawn, but so far it's fun so I'll make more in the future)

quick 15min study .. dude in a spacesuit, jumped from 39km or thereabouts yesterday
Trying to get faster and such.
Mind you, the proportions are all over the place, but it gets the image of a spacesuit across I guess.
(I've got to keep practicing photoshop in between painting)

Finished the spirit (well, finished...deadline was due today so there you go)
Also did some studies. The aim of these was to learn to improve to see colors.
NO COLOR PICKER was used. I hope this helps to train the eye.
Of course, the pictures aren't perfect copies but that was not what I was striving for.
I added the reference pictures for clarity and for whoever wants to give them a go.
Practicing: color, edges, photoshop in general, speed.

    Working on the giants...
This takes a little more time than I thought, but then again, everything does.
I'm going to push these as far as I can. Hopefully, I'll learn something.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.

It's been a week already. Damn. Well, and now for something totally different...
I saw several people post these technical kind of isometric drawings and I thought: I want to be able to do that too.
So, I figured, just give it a go and see what happens. First up: a tank/fighterplane/hummer hybrid (or trybrid)
Second: regular tank and double barrel tank (still in sketch phase) Inks are with a dippen.

And a painting I started (capt. Jack Sparrow); basically this is the 1st setup, about 1hr in (acrylics on canvas, 40x50cm)

And in the category AARGH my EYES! The fail ! The horror!
... a painting of an epic, famous photograph for practice. Those eyes ... just demanded it of me.
I kind of messed stuff up, so her facial features are now all over the place (sometimes eyeballing things gets you into this shitzone)
but I'll fix it all up and hopefully finish painting her by the weekend.

Did some more work on Jack Sparrow, a scribble and a first layer of color on the hobgoblin in post #252
Also put a first layer of color on a fantasy landscape from post #247

...update on the hobgoblin piece for my friend
and a trex full skeleton painting
    both acrylics on paper.
the trex roughly 30x50cm , the hobgoblin is about 20x35cm,

I kinda like where the homo hobgoblinus is going, something botering me about the trex though.
I screwed up some bones (near tail end and up on the neck and had to restructure it with white.
But now the background, which was all waterspash supercombo luckbonus and such, is f*cked at those spots.

Finished the trex skeleton, started a triceratops, which is nearly done.
Also played around with a very limited pallette, which I read about somewhere.
And started 2 seadrakes (or dragons) with them.

The pallette consists of only 4 colors: titanium white, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow and ultramarine blue.
The idea is that you get color harmony because every color contains at least 2 of these 4 colors and
that you practice mixing colors. I'm quite happy with where these 2 are going.

Suggestions, comments and/or crits are welcome! Cheers.

PS: oh, everything is acrylics on paper, about 40x50cm for all of them.

you can paint really well, but I suggest you study more from life because some of your forms look flat.

PeteJ: thanks, dude! For your compliment and criticial note.
And you're right, and you're not the first to bring this up...I therefore vow to do studies from life, starting in january!
I thought about it and I think studying from life can teach a great deal about how light actually affects objects, either living or dead,
how it flows around shapes to help describe form and these insights can then be translated back into the depraved, I mean fluffy happyjoyjoy
fantasy or sci-fi worlds we all envision

    Sketchdump

.. damn it's been way too long again.
First I wanted to finish all these paintings I had going so I could post in an orderly fashion in this sketchbook.
But then I figured, what the hell. So, the paintings will follow soon, here's a sketchdump.
Hand practice, some Hogarth, some pictures, some random scribbles...

Oh and I wish all of you a very merry Christmas!

    Harmageddon,
Hey man, I'm really digging your Dinosaur skeletons! They not only have a strong sense of structure (3 dimensional quality) but what fantastic texture! Do you work from photo reference for these, or maybe hang out in your local museum?

I'd love to see this sense of depth and texture move into your other pieces... I'm thinking if strong attention to reference is what helps you achieve this in the dino-skeletons, maybe some of your working practices from those can be used when doing other works. Like, you may not be able to find reference for a seadrake, or hobgoblin per say, but maybe for some of the elements? Like pictures of a wet snake or alligator for ideas on the texture of scales for the seadrake or a body builder lifting something over his head for the hobgoblin... just a suggestion...
Great work though - Keep it up !

angieb: Thanks, glad you like them!
They are referenced, from pictures I found online. There's no museum in my area with these awesome skeletons,
but I will definately visit them sometimes to draw these things on the spot. I hear that Berlin and London have quite
a big collection of dinosaurs so I'll probably visit those somewhere in the near future.

You are right about the attention to reference, and this has been stated before.
I really appreciate the comment, since I'm quite stubborn I have to hear these things multiple times before they take effect
Thanks again, and I will incorporate your ideas in my fantasy works.
