    update on the dragon sculpt..
the scales are making me dizzy..

I do hope this sculpting (besides being fun) will help me understand light and shadow better. Also, I hope to get a feeling for form in 3D space.
And, last but not least, if it turns out nice, I'll expand my portfolio.

I really like how the dragon is coming out! Really strong actually, though I worry you're getting into details a bit early and might smudge it later. Will work really well for any lighting studies you'd want to do though, can't wait to see it finished!

cara: thanks! You're right, starting too soon on details seems to be my biggest pitfall, be it in painting or sculpting. I hope to finish it early next week!

Shit, it's been way too long.

Just a little update on the dragon I'm afraid.
Lots of stuff, busy with life and such. Hope to have bigger update soon.

Update.. didn't finish the 1st dragon sculpt yet but did start a 2nd one.
This beast is supposed to hang around on a tower or other ruined building, or rock, and wraps around it. I want to make it into a candle holder.

And some updates on the Iron Man painting from a while back.
This thing has nearly destroyed me. Iron man is a tough guy apparently.
It near annihilated my motivation, or sense of being able to paint at all...
I kind of rushed into it without an underdrawing or even real measurments.
Just eyeballed the whole thing. And then, after several layers, I realized proportions were all over the place.
Arm too short, leg too long or to the left or right.
Head tilted wrong. Etcetera. For now, I'm beat.
However. I will crawl back to my cave, lick my wounds and fight it another day.

oh wha..how, wow I love this dragon! What is that material you are using to make it? I wants to try too looks awesome. Also I can't see anything wrong with the Ironproportions? I think it looks really cool and loving the colors init so far. But I feel you, I've been beaten several times by different paintings and it has been really depressing and hard to get up after the defeat. But always have and you will surely too (although I still think the Iron Man looks cool). Keep up!

satu: thanks! You cheer me right up with your comments
The dragons are made with super sculpey, I ordered it online after I saw several people in the sculpt&3D forum here use it. It is awesome stuff!
You can work very detailed with it (sometimes too detailed, it also keeps your fingerprints on it) and after you bake it it is very hard, and breakresistant.

Iron man proportion issues are small, but when sitting for hours on end you see them all over the place, lol. I got sucked into the void of details.
Yeah. Paintings can sometimes break the artist.
But in the end, it is all part of the learning process, so another lesson learnt today. It will make the future victories that much better.

    update

Well, that's been a while.. again.
Here's some stuff I've been working on.

    Slowly progressing me thinks.

First 2 are acrylics on canvas, 40x50 cm (both still wips)
A sketch, update on the dragon sculpt (started 3 more, gotta finish this one though) and update on older photoshop stuff.

I baked my 1st dragon sculpt!
Wanted to make it better and more awesome and such but that would have taken so much more time,
that I figured this one is finished and I just make more.
They'll get better eventually. Not that this one sucks or anything.
I'm quite pleased with it actually.

I've put a first layer of colour on it.
I'm using regular acrylics paints. They don't seem to stick too well, but since I'm planning to work in several layers that'll work itself out I think.

Hey dude, thanks for dropping by my SB.

Everything I've seen in here looks great, especially that dragon sculpt...the only thing I can crit...and this is probably going to be the lamest crit ever, is the eyes is a lot of your animals come out looking flat. I know it was a weird thing to point out...but yeah man..just keep going, your doing great!

Psychobuddy: your welcome, dude. Thanks for the revisit.
Actually that is a good crit you point out; I didn't focus too much on the eyes before, but they can be a very important element. I'll look into improving that.

Some scribbles in photoshop this time.
    Babysteps. All wips.

Apart from the angel, all are inspired by the Creature and Character of the week activities: see the main forum for them if you like. I'm behind on the current challenges, but I find that challenging myself with them is a nice break from painting, and helps me develop photoshop skills.

satu: thanks! Yeah I like it when the paint doesn't cover everything.
Still playing with it though. Nice to hear you're going into sculpting too!
Curious to see what you'll come up with.

Small update on the gatekeeper, quick sketch of a sort of bison.

    update

Sketch of a knight/captain of the guards.
Again, inspired by the contests over in the community activities on this forum.

I'm thinking of incorporating more of a story element in my pictures.
I feel that it is pretty much lacking most of the time.
Anyway this is an attempt with text.

Nevermind the spelling errors, they're all over the place. Will fix that in the next wip.
    Thanks for looking.

    update

I've been trying to participate in the creature of the week challenge again and this time set myself a deadline for 1 day. So I made this.
It's not undead, it's kind of mundane, and there's a lot wrong with it.
Still, it does not suck monkeyballs so there you have it.

    update

Update on the displacer beast, and a belker (D&D monster) and
work in progress on a hydra of sorts and some weird jellyfish
that was supposed to be an interplanetary vessel. Not happy with that one.

Still. Learning lots of stuff, putting the pen mileage in.

    update

Process still all over the place, working on several pieces at once.
Trying to build a portfolio over the coming 2 weeks and see if I can get
a job somewhere with it. That's right. Looking for work.

The catlike beast is near finished.
The centaur dude has some anatomy issues - prolly should go look for references. The worm thing's colors are all over the place now. Still working on that one.

Cool to see you updating so often now!
I see you use a lot of soft brushes in your works. I would like to see you use some more of hard-edged brushes too. Though I see you've been starting to experiment with hard-edged brushes too in some of your works. I like especially the face on this winged cat-zombie piece. I think it is somewhat unattached from the background though. Like it's not really standing on those stones. Also I like how you started it with hard brushes. Uuh I think I'm a hard-brushed person, what can I say Also I like this.
Oh and I think some of your black & white works would still need a more versatile value range. And especially more darks here and there. Thing I'm struggling still too.. Nothing more now, just keep posting these! And also remember to do some studies every now and then based on these imagination things and what you learn you are missing from them.
    Cheers.

Satu: thanks for pointing that out. Yeah I'm mainly scribbling with the soft round brush, although the first sketch may be with the hard round brush too.
I'm experimenting with brushes now, still a total beginner with that.
I feel that I should be able to do most with a simple brush and not rely on fancy brushes too much. At the same time, some of these brushes really save a lot of time so now I'm finding a middle ground with them.
Damn I don't know nothing yet about photoshop lol.

The winged catzombie (supposed to be a displacer beast, for the creature of the week challenge on the forum) does seem detached from the background. I see if I can fix that. Deadline is today

And yes, I should do studies too. And use references for imagination pieces.
Still, my biggest challenge is going to be realistic light effects.

Oh and to keep updating spree alive: here's a thing.
And an update on the centaur; using ref this time.
    You keep pushing it too!

update on the centaur at the forest scene.
Scrapped the previous dragon, changed the background.
Now I'm thinking of adding a few more centaurs and perhaps a baby dragon.
The idea is that the centaurs have accidentally come upon the dragon's nursery...

Also a new one, a tarrasque, wip for creature challenge, still need to make it a chaos one though.
Scribble for DSG, but I can't post it there for I have no photobucket and am too lazy to make an account right now...
And an update on the hydra; the adventurers suck hard. lol. prrractice!

small update on the centaur in the forest piece...
I've widened the canvas, this makes for a more interesting composition I think.
Also added a bunch of centaurs, to make things more interesting.
    Crits/suggestions welcome. Cheers.
