heh, where i work i mostly do motion.
all the illustration i do is done on my own free time outside of work. every once in awhile i get to draw for work, but not often.

my process on the last two portraits:
i did the initial sketch/linework in photoshop freehand while looking at a photo. i attached a print screen of this, just a layer with the person, and sketched on a different layer. not the best likeness, but i think i got pretty close.
i didn't have time to get the shading right the same way, im not that great with lighting and what not, so i took the photo, scaled and squashed it to fit into my sketch (during this step i kind of cursed myself for not tracing for the linework in the first place... but im happier that i didn't trace because otherwise i wouldn't have posted them here. ha), once i got them pretty much lined up, i roughly outlined the different shades for the lighting. then i just filled them in. i also cleaned up a bit of my linework... i couldn't help it, things wern't lining up properly...
after that, i took the different layers color and made the splatters/smears/dirt come off of the areas of the same color.
    thats it.
this morning though, like i said, i had to make a frame with the show title, and instead of just doing splattered/smeared type like the illustrations, i wanted some 3d depth. so i extruded some type in cinema4d, rendered out just the occlusion pass, treated that with the same splatters/smears/dirt, and quickly comped it together with the host of the show and BOOM, finished just as the client walked in.
    haha

oh, and it looks like they might be going with my direction for the show open. im really excited. tomorrow we have the shoot for the talent.

after the shoot... i have to start trying to figure out how to animate this shit....
    ugh.

    wish me luck.

great fluency with your gestures, and killer style overall.

The "dirty" sensibility in all these is great, especially in that first environmental scene - it almost makes me want to try to spit the dust out of my mouth. I like how you take it in almost the opposite direction with your graphic design pieces, too, but still hold onto a lot of that edginess and grit. They're all pretty kickass.

The angular way you draw your characters is also distinct and stylish, but I wonder if breaking that up in some areas with a few curves or softer elements wouldn't make them more naturalistic and relatable.

yes, ps3 does have an animation feature. from what i hear you can even import movies... i might have to do this for the piece once we start animating. we had the shoot already... i haven't seen the edit yet so i have no idea how long the shots of the talent are.
    wish me luck
    ha!

yeah, i dunno man. i see sharp angles in people all the time. i feel that we need a balance, sharp angles with nice smooth curves, but thats just me.

    thanks for commenting!

no, in illustrator i use the pencil tool set to fill with no stroke.
but you have to double click the pencil tool in the tools palete and turn off "edit selected paths"

thanks for the comments guys, i'll have an update soon. got some skateboard designs im workin on.

well... i didn't get to continue with my DEEP competition stuff because of work, so im really bummed out about that.
when i get the time i plan on finishing anyway. i hate being the kind of guy who says hes going to do something and then doesn't do it.

    anyway,
here at work today while waiting for a ram preview, i was doodling...never tried doing caricatures before, so this is my first attempt. no reference, just off the top of my head.

    NICE!!

I've wanted to see you do more people, and you're getting into it. Not only that, but you're actually pretty good at it!

    Like, what a shock, eh?

Now, howzabout youse take this to finish? Thick & thin lines for emphasis, hatching tonalities to bring out dimension and such...? I'd love to see this more complete.

complete2, that is. Hah! That was punny.

Also, POST MORE STUFF! FEED THE BEAST, DAMMIT! You post stuff so infrequently nowadays, I feel like a fluffer in an empty porn set!

    Nothing to savor!

hey guys, i know its been a while, but i DO have a good reason: i quit my job at belief.
i've been there for about 5 years... figure its about time to move on ya know?
anyway, i was inspired by this dude Bob Kato... practiced some of my photoshop painting.
this is what i came up with in about 2 hours, im pretty proud of it simply because i actually used a real technique, i didn't fake it this time. i went through the process the way i was supposed to. and this time, i felt as though i understood WHY i was doing what i was doing. i felt like i "got it" ya know?

i know its a bit sloppy... fuck it, here it is:
