Zeitwolf: Hah yeh I should do more with pen and marker again I guess. Been doing a lot of PS-ing lately.

John: Heya man, doing good. Totally busy though And yeh, dunno if I'll get to finish the elf piece actually...

    meticulous: Here's some more!

LordVenom: Thanks! Yeh I used to have the same problem, but the only way to get rid of that is to just plunge in and try -it's liberating Just start light and thin and work from that. The Dragonslayer piece is done straight with pen, I only had an hour so wouldn've had time to do it any other way.

The Flying Dutchmen, syk3, IceCold, Flying Panda, JustinBeckett, vatteh: Thanks!

TheGnoll: Hey dude! Yeah dunno if I like that Elf piece that much anymore, I might pick it back up at a later point maybe

    JiR: Thanks for stopping by!

Seraph Fawkes: I'm currently freelancing for various clients actually. Also still trying to finish my study at some point

So, now for something completely different! Did this one for my girlfriend I wanted to do something more with the penguins I drew earlier, and figured I could try my hand at a more childrens-book style kind of thing.

And something I did for the Concepting Magic challenge over on the ArtOrder blog. The topic is to create the visuals for a D&D spell, in either an illustration or storyboard kind of form. Not sure I'll be able to finish anything for it though...

    Aaaawww, that's adorable!

One crit on the penguins... I'm noticing that the blackness of the penguins (and also the rope ladder, to a lesser degree) is much much darker than these other areas that are in the same plane, and in great shadow. This inconsistency is leaping off the image at me.

That bird in the foreground seems misplaced to me, too... He looks joined to the anchor, and doesn't fit the composition... maybe put him elsewhere in the image?

oh man, that penguin piece is really adorable, and looks great! i agree with Will on the black and i add that the red of the bricks is trying to pierce my retina, also agree on the weird tangent going on with the bird/anchor- but overall, one of those pieces that made me "wow-hehe" out loud.
The spell thing looks really interesting too, would be cool to see more on that! it would really look cool as a neatly llustrated schematic!

always cool to stop by!Will you be going in Berlin for the MADE btw? would be cool to meet up there!

Loving the penguin piece so much! Air Pirate penguins are more awesome than i imagined!
Just echoin Will really - it feels like that same darkness of the penguins should overflow into all those saturated purple shadows around the ship - even if its just the parts around the penguin.

Keep it up man, always a pleasure seeing your work.

William b. Hand, the Gnoll: Thanks for the feedback! Yeh the penguins were supposed to stand out a little, but I guess it doesn't really work well. The bird is just a little awkward I admit I might go back in and change those details. I'm still trying to get to grips with the more cartoon-style painting I got going there. It's fun though

And no, unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Berlin in June I think. Would be fun to hang out with a bunch of friends but it's slightly above budget and bad timing I'm afraid.

PHATandy: Thanks! Yeh I might work some more on the pirate piece -or start a new and better one altogether...

OmertA: Trying to crit someone you think is way better than you can still be helpful! Thanks anyway

So yeh, ArtOrder has a new challenge up: A Dungeons & Dragons Pin-up! There's a whole bunch of races to chose from, most of which I have no clue what they look like in the first place. After some research I found something about the Minotaur race, and well...I just had to get this sketch out of my brain.

    I couldn't help it...

Going to do a more serious try tomorrow I think

Great stuff man. I've been following your great tutorial lately, it has some great perspective "shortcuts". I've also been thinking about buying the Eissen en Steur sketching book, does it have any additional tips as in your tutorial and would it be helpful in drawing objects from life correctly?

what I love about this sketchbook is that every post seems to be imaginative! This is something I love to see (and that I struggle with myself). Very impressed with that triceratops literally of the top of your head a few pages back, and the secret santa piece before that is very cool. Would love to see some more pencil work in these later pages, but the PS stuff is looking really nice too!

    Definitely subscribed!

    Krato, DK Sketch, Surus: Thanks!

D.C.: Hey, thanks! Well, there used to be a little booklet around from Koos Eissen that dealt with more tutorial kind of things and had a lot of tips and tricks in it (it's from 15 years or something ago though). The Sketching book was more focused on inspiring people and to show what ID drawing is all about rather than having a lot of tutorials and/or tricks in it. It has a great variety of examples from professional design companies in it though, and you can still learn a lot from just looking at the images.

Beelow: Yea those EOW's are already from waaay back...I should try one again these days I think

    matty mcmullen: Uhm thanks?

ThomasM: Yeah I should do more pencil and pen work I guess. I do that for work a lot though, so I tend to grab other tools whenever I can.

Here's a more serious approach to the pin-up challenge. I found out the D&D Drow (dark elves) have a deity that's called the Thing That Lurks -it's a darp purple blob with tentacles!- so I was sold. Tentacles it is!

Probably going with the left one, but I thought I'd include all the sketches that came out okay.

Great poses, I agree with 1 being the best . Thanks for your comments on the Eissen book, I think I'll look around and see if I can find something more tutorial like then. In the meantime your tutorial is keeping me busy .

Always fun stuff in here! I love the creature paintings the best. The colors you work into those are really fantastic. The sketches are fun too look at too. You have a really confident line. Great stuff, man. Love to see more of the penguins. lol

That's the standing-up-and-lookin-atchya type of udder, that is! Although... I wonder if bulls actually respond sexually to the udders of cows. Maybe somebody's done a study?

h.k: Thanks, that seems to be the consensus yeh

hunchback: Thanks! Yea I dunno, when I'm painting human-oids somehow I never feel like cleaning up my lines too much, makes painting them a bit boring. Also, I absolutely hate my tablet for making clean lines actually.

D.C.: hehe good to hear that! Yeah there's a few books out there that might be more useful.

Zebz: Yah no doubt more penguins will follow, I'm having fun painting them

William: Hehe well, if humans are any indication...they're a mix of both after all.

TheGnoll: Hahah yeah it was just one of those sketches you have to get out of your system, or it'll eat you from the inside. It cracked me up while drawing it though

So here's an update on my Drow image. Still fixing some minor issues and lighting/color and all that, but having fun.

So, last update on the Drow pin-up. My arms need a little rest, I need to cook and I'm not quite sure what -if anything- to do with the background yet so I'm going to let her rest for a bit. Deadline is tonight though...

Here's the final version, deadline is up for me. I did a few small touch-ups after getting some tough love on IRC Kinda happy with the result, especially considering I only started two days ago and I've been taking it easy.

    thats niiiiiice man!
there's a couple of minor things that don't convinve me 100% in the face/neck area but its nitpicking, and damn, you worked really quickly and efficiently on this.
Love the attention you gave to the armor design regardless of the fact its not very visible and jeez, you sure put a lot of love in painting those boobs.Actually that is a pretty explicit pin up, not exactly suggestive but more a "(check out mah boobs) in your face!" approach that kinda eludes the point of a pin up,imho (if that makes any sense).
The think i like the most about your work is that you can paint, you can draw, you're efficient AND your stuff looks cool- so here's a cookie.

TheGnoll: Thanks dude! Yeah I thought of covering up the boobs but uhm, well..couldn't kill my darlings this time I guess? They were actually the easiest part to paint of the whole thing, the face gave me trouble as usual. It's why I enjoy doing these pin-ups though, they force me to draw pretty faces -or at least attempt it. Thanks for the cookie though!
