UPDATE: My name is Ramon Hurtado, I'm a 21 year old art student currently in Los Angeles. My sole aim is to work hard in order to master the craft and create paintings that express the beauty of the world around us, like my hero Mariano Fortuny.

Hi everybody, i havent had much luck with replies in the SB section, and i just recently started looking at this section and all the great work here, so i decided to post some of my studies for some much needed critiques.

A bit of bkgd, my name's Ramon Hurtado, i'm a high school senior right now and will be attending USC's animation and digital arts program in the fall. My goals are to become proficient in representational drawing, painting and sculpting and to ultimately become a character animator. As of now, favorite artists are Sargent, Goya, Michelangelo, Copley and Rubens.

Anyway, on to the work!

Nice work. You're on the right track. And if you are serious about improving your art, this is the section to post. you'll recieve the most helpful comments here. The other sections are mainly for those who want ass pats and ball rubs, except of course for the critiques section where you are generally told how much you suck. If you want specific comments try posting only a few pieces at a time. It's overwhelming to try to comment on a large quantity like this, but I give you much credit for your obvious hard work.

Hi IILooney, thanks for the response, this thread does seem really great, I'm really excited to have my work here. I apologize for the large volume of work, haha, just goes to show that I should've started posting a long time ago, from now on I'm going to be posting works as I make them, so definitely less at a time.

And with that, here's a titian study from last night, I'm also starting to paint my first "commissioned" portrait, so I'll post more on that when I'm done

Hey panchosimpson, nice work! I really like that last piece, seems like your shading skills are growing already, even the reflected light looks good (I'm really struggling with that ). Is this from a master work too?

hey Coen, thanks, this is from life, it's my little sister (she's still mad at me for making her sit there for 2 and a half hours lol)

I do like your works, and you show good progress. One thing I should mention is that it seems that you have a tendency to get lazy about the quality of lines after a certain point on some pieces you've posted (mainly the observation pieces and not master work copies). The shading in the life studies or sketches can vary from excellent (i.e. your sister's portraits) to being terribly flat (your father "kickin' back", the fruit basket): always keep a keen eye on noting the darkest and lightest spots to give your drawings a good sense of depth.

Overall you have good strengths! You remind me a lot of myself when I was in high school. And keep working and posting!

Hey Novenus, thanks for the critiques and encouragement! I totally agree with you regarding the values in the drawing of my dad, that one was sort of a quickie, same for the fruit basket, I wil try to push for more contrast next time! Thanks again!

perhaps you could touch up the smoothness when you paint drapery, otherwise it won't look quite as smooth/silky as it could.

Duly noted I've been having trouble smoothing things out...for the record though....this particular "drapery" was a rough old towel, lol.

so, i since i decided to begin studying anatomy seriously...i decided to start with bones, but diagrams werent really cutting it for me....so i remembered that my biology teacher has a set of real human bones that i can draw from...here's the first of what will likely be many bone studies
