the one in the back stands kinda strange. he looks like hes falling backwards. i think the storm bolter is to small and the head is a bit to low.

Composition seems a bit weird; the marie in the background is just kind of 'sitting there' in perfect view from top to bottom and sporting an uninteresting pose. The 'visual journey' from him (which seems to be the focal point) aaaaalll the way down to the guy on the bottom seems too long, with not a whole lot in between.
My advice: alwayd remember that people view visual elements in sequence. Focal point is the first, then it goes to whatever else cathes their eye etc. You want this journey to be interesting, but also easy. Right now having another interesting element somewhere between the two or moving the lower guy up a bit might help make this come together better.
Rhineville-thanks for the crits. I was planning on adding more details in the piece. The pose is bothering me a bit, I have to make it more dynamic. I'll keep your crits in mind. Thanks.

hmm well I would like to help but am interested to see how it unfolds
have you thought of him only using one hand? Eg no bolter?
I kind of like the original stance of the back marine. If you give him a wound, like where that circle is on his left leg (to our right), then he could be falling or at least favoring a side. Adds a certain amount of energy and motion to the painting. Plus, the last thing you want to do in a battle is stand up straight!

DOODLING is like Crack!
Thanks for the crits guys.
Ifman1- His legs are bent a bit, and you have to remember that Space Marines take pride in fighting up front. They like to charge head on and rarely bother with cover. They like to overwhelm their foes with their speed and size.If you read 40k books you'll understand.

that looks waaay better then the first. i really like your style. and im really curious how it will look when you're finished!
Hi, I did a paintover to illustrate a couple of things that may help.
One is the head on the foreground character: too much of the side of the head was showing.
I noticed that you put a lot of detail in the image, but it is all getting lost as it all has the same values. Things can be popped out just by deepening the shadow and paying more attention to the hightlights and lightsource.
If you have something in the background and you want to show depth, then it is a good idea to drop the contrast on the background so it dosen't compete too much with the foreground.
hope that helps.
mastahdude-thanks. I will post the finished piece soon.
Nutter-thanks for the crits.Yeah, sometimes my values are too close to eachother. thanks for the heads-up.
THanks for the paint-over.

i agree about the head
space marine rocks
Thats a great looking pic!
My only crit would be the perspective on the fore-most SpaceMarine - the barrels of his boltgun seem oddly skewed?
i disagree!Originally Posted by FAST ART

I have no eyes and i must see!
Fingers are getting lost among the clutter to the left.
The gun planes are wonky on the foreground character.
The scepter/club needs a more rounded feel to it.
And the guy's arm being that stock straight is just odd.
Try it yourself bro..it becomes really uncomfortable hyperflexed like that.
Best of luck with this Mack.
Cheers!
Thanks Mike. I'll make the changes. The gun in foreground has been nothing but trouble. How about a quick paint-over on the gun?

Overall, I like the image, though I must say I liked the hind-marine better with the long hair then with the mohawk.
I agree that the fingers are getting lost, but I also think they look a bit odd...probably they are a bit too much apart from eachother...
Top-notch work Lone Wolf!

nice WH40k illo man! my only problem is that dwarf looking space marine... i think it doesn´t fit with this universe... make him look less dwarflike.

to me they look kind of nordic. even a little dwarfish as gringo says. to me they look more like space mercinaries or even barbarians.
Keep Going At It....
Andro Takes A Dump...(sketch Book, etc)
I'm assuming they are Spacewolves, who, while still space marines, tend to look very wild and barbarian-ish. Though I'm not sure about the skulls and spikes, though... at times I think they look a bit like Chaos forces because of this.
