quickie concept (updated: added bio gun concept)

    Hey Guys

Did this quickie concept for Donovan Keele. He is using it for his Dominance War submission.

I havent done a concept outside of work in about 2 years so I thought I would just toss it up.

Just a couple hours of fun.

    Is this THE "Hawkprey"?
If yes, I want you to know that you were one of my greatest inspiration in my teenager years. Thank you for your awesomeness.

Simple but precise, sketchy but controlled, I sense an obvious professionalism in here.
I desperately hope for you to continue posting more works here in CA.
    Cheers-!

    hey guys

Ya I know its a goofy little drawing but I had to post something.

The little mesh in the corner was a first pass by Donovan Keele. I just drew over it. Saves a little time figuring out perspective and stuff.

See you guys around the water cooler.

    P.S.

I guess I can show this because it was released for Gamers Day.

This is a concept for the bio rifle in the upcoming Unreal Tournament 3

Took much longer to draw than the little guy up top.

fucking awesome gun concept. Maybe I'm wrong, but It looks like you modeled the whole thing and then rendered it using some kind of cell shader? Great work as usual man!

    Hey thanks Mandryk

Ya I do a base model and animate it with all the apropriate reloads and alt fires.

Then I render it out and do a paintover to tighten things up.

I do love the "find edge" filter in photoshop.

that's pretty cool man, it's like you've created a whole new class of concept artist...the concept-modeler. How long does it take to produce something like that? I would imagine several days at least eh?

oh ya definitely takes some time. I basically 3d prototype all my concepts now, including characters.

With one design I will include a 2D drawing, a MAX file of the concept, and rendered movies showing how the gun, vehicle, or object will animate.

Depending on the complexity of the model it could take a couple weeks to do a concept like this.

....But it saves the modellers and animators lots of time in the end, having a relatively fleshed-out design in 3d. They dont have to think about proportions or pivots or whether this part is supposed to move or not. I try and figure that all out for them.

Also there is much less guesswork about how the final in-game asset will look and work. When the "higher-ups" sign off on one of these concepts they know the in-game model will look almost like it.......

vice versa, if the final asset doesnt look like my concept we can just point to the 3d model and say "like this". Eliminates alot of the redos and tweaking post concept because the modeller just builds over my mesh.

I dont think this kind of concepting would work for every game company but it sure seems to be working well here at Epic.

Sweet concept, loved the nutsack on that guy, and the way his mid section is built. As for the gun, cool process on it...Didnt know you mixed 2d and 3d. Quite the complete concept. :I
