    Pre-viz artwork

    My first post.

This artwork was done for a Scifi project I'm working on. They are part matte painting/part CGI (3DSmax) and done in about 3 days each.

Originally they were supposed to just be pre-viz work, but now they are going to be used as finals. Critiques are TOTALLY welcome!!!!!

The third picture is really cool. It reminds me of a movie that I can't remember the name of right now.

I think the pieces are pretty solid. The only thing that's bugging me is the scale of the jeep in the lower left corner of the last image. It should probably be way smaller, looks as big as the statue of liberty. ^_^ good job!

Although I like the last one the most, I can't help but thinking that I've seen something similar way too many times before, and trust me I'm not criticizing you for it. I know it was a necessary scene for your project.
I will vote for the second piece for its completion and clarity.
The only suggestion that I have is to have less balanced space proportion.
I feel the negative and positive spaces seem mildly equal in your centre piece.

Keep posting! I would love to see some more of your stuff

The second picture is really cool!

Good job sir! However, the third picture have a lot of issues, first off, the water is sharp all the way to the horisont, even the horisont line is sharp.
The jeep is on the same distance ( almost ) as the statue of liberty , which makes the statue either very small, or the car very very very big.
Also, the building in the background looks very big to be that far away.. and very lonely as well.. So the third picture is in general very weak.. Plus, the sky repeats itself twice at least... Its like you used a small reference and copied into it like a pattern.

Keep it up! As I said, I love the second one

I think the last picture would look better if it were a bit darker, as if rainclouds were just coming in or clearing out, and the sunlight is either being almost fully devoured or almost breaking through the clouds. Or in other words, more overcast and more light piercing through the sky would make it a bit more epic. I like the concept though, good job!

there's a lot of goodness going on in all of these, but also some points where things weaken a lot, and since you invited a critique:

first image: it's hard to establish any sense of scale, even relative scale, in this one because there are some conflicting clues. the floating diatoms and general SEM-look to it say micro scale, but riveted seams, numeric code decal, and amount of detail on the nanobots(?) belie this impression. and although it may not be "realisitic," to do so, i think a little more atmospheric perspective to separate the picture planes would be helpful. the BG object has a very amorphous form at present, making it harder to see the space around it -- a more distinct rendition of its volume would help the scope of the image.

second image. please completely lose the haze effect around the highlights and practical lights! there is no atmosphere in orbit to create such effects. the earth/planet is well-handled, but the atmo haze on the limb is too thick and bright. it usually only becomes that visible when seen backlit or in a much lower orbit. try finding some NASA refs. more hard-point stars in the BG, less nebulosity, unless you're trying to portray the Milky Way, in which case you need to be more structured and accurate.

third: scale issues have already been mentioned, but also remember that simply dropping recognizable items sort of willy-nilly into the scene may work against you. i'm willing to be proved wrong but i don't think you can see Miss Liberty and the Empire State Building in quite those relative positions. worst of all, though, is that if the ESB has only its top floors sticking above the new sea level, the Statue would be drowned. if that much of Liberty still shows, so would a helluva lot more of the NYC skyline. as it is, that only the ESB is showing is a bit illogical also.

as pre-viz, a lot of this might be forgiven. as finals, i'd think twice.

fantastic feedback!!! thank you guys. I'm going to work on the Statue of Liberty image first, it's need the most work of the bunch.

I love solid critiques because it's too easy to get working on a deadline and lose perspective (figuratively and literally). :-)
