@OldNoobie- thanks! The dark spot meaning the hole? It's a very high-contrast bottom-lit piece. If not black, what color should it be?
I submitted this to the critique center and got lots of good pointers. Here's how the sucker looks now:

hey man sorry for not commenting here and much as i should have...
you've been doing some great stuffas for the painting i would advise against using pure black as black isn't a colour, i've learned to blend a really dark blue with dark red to make a darkish purple thats pretty close to black when painting traditionally...i would suggest aiming for darker tones but not jumping straight to black (eg the t-shirt)
keep up the hard work man![]()
Wow, that's a killer portrait you have there ^^ It's cool to see you jumping so far ahead in just a week's time, keep up the good work!
Sweet use of value. yes the self portrait is a bit creepy, but not compaired with the origional photo. (snicker). Now you must zombify it. Hey I got my new tablet pc and I'm ramping up to do my first colored works.

You know you've achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing more to take away.

Wow, haven't been here in a while! And it looks like I never posted either, how did that happen?? Anyway great sketchbook, the last coupla portraits are looking swell. Nice colors on the self portrait!
Keep it coming man~
Hey there - another old-timer here (37) who's just getting started for real. You have a great sb, not just because of the drawings but because you actually write in it, and address specific issues like rendering and such.
I'm going to take more time to go through it in detail over the weekend, but you're doing really well. I particularly liked a lot of the anatomy studies on the home page. Also, I've got a comic I'm working on that has two or three Chinese characters, and I'm having a devil of a time drawing Asian features consistently. So I'll look at how you do that too.
I've focused more on Bridgman lately - I'm not familiar with Loomis, so I'll go check that out. Any pointers for a first stop?
Take a look at my series of in-depth critiques, like this one of Salvador Dali's hidden portrait of Lincoln.

It's more than two years later, and I think I finally found my medium.
All hail the Illustrator Blob Brush.

I think all my friends here may have passed on.
Ah well.
Quickie:
Another quickie.
I call this one "a study in hand cancer."
Ye gods, look at that thing.
Hrm.... I loved your previous things, but I must say.. I'm not so fond of this. In the very last picture, while it's extremely sylized, that finger and hand in general is driving me nuts...! T_T
None the less, I adore your work.
My Sketchbook.
First figure I've done completely from memory that didn't absolutely blow.
I'm very excited about this![]()

wow, haven't heard from you in aaaages. Hows things?
I terms of your illustrator work, its definitely proving to be a plus in terms of line quality but your endeavors in stylisation is quite a tough path man...some areas such as hands definitely could use some work as you probably know already.
For the style you're going for, correct overlap of form is very very important, one wrong curve and a whole limb or hip could look off. All this is ofcourse is heavily grounded on anatomy knowledge, I suggest doing a lot of gesture studies of figures, perhaps with pen traditionally? You'd be surprised how much improvement you can make once there's no erasing or undo to give you second chances.
Glad to see you posting again man...what have you been up to all this time? Hope you stay around again!
productive day
lovely,amazing progress.
keep it up!!
^^ danke
This is easily the most time I've spent on one project.
These are all great.Damn, that is some nasty hand cancer though.
