    Vert's sketches and paintings

My goal has always been to become a master illustrator along the lines of Sparth, Android, Ryan Church, and Ian McCaig. To help myself with this goal, I'm making sure to produce new artwork every day that's of posting quality.

So we'll start with some simple warm-ups.

    Apple mania!

Some of these are were done just very quickly to get them in on time, and the impressionist one is done using the auto impressionist brush in painter, so it's not a good indicator of what I can do.

Still, these were fun exercises to do, and I'm ready to move on to more advanced, and perhaps cleaner painting.

A glass turtle paperweight under some dim light.

Done in Painter 9 using only the simple water brush. It took roughly 4 hours with some small breaks. I used iterative saves, so if anyone wants to see a step by step I can post it.

There may be some problems since I haven't checked how this looks on a CRT monitor.

I really like that glass turtle. That's really great work on the lighting and reflections, especially if you just started practicing. I would definitely like to see your step-by-step, too.

Keep them coming, I'd really like to see some more.

Wow, haven't uploaded in a while. Mostly due to laziness.

Today marks a major push to be sketching all the time, and to do studies alongside my classwork. Hope to be posting every week with new, finished, artwork.

For now, here's some sketches. Like other posters showing progress, I want to post a lot of what I'm doing to give people an idea of my skill level, including my strengths (heads and basic perspective) and weaknesses (everything else).

And a class study I did in simple light, which we only painted the contained (no light hitting) and cast (light blocked by other object) shadows on a mannequin, along with some basic transitions between.

The lecture ran late since he had to show the class how to handle oils. So I was only able to get the head done properly. I'll come back and finish the blends on the torso, along with fixing up the proportion issues on the torso.

    Image descriptions:
    1. The model
    2. After the initial sketch, here's the lay in with an acrylic wash to denote the shadow areas. The sketch before this started to look like a man due to all the construction lines, but the wash helped pull it back towards female by defining the feminine face.
    3. Final painting.

Really nice paint work. I'd like to see the rest of the steps in that last painting. Also like to see more of your sketchwork!

Image 1: An unfinished full flay drawing, in painter using digital sanguine (charcoal). I ran out of class time, thankfully I took ample pictures of all the flays setup and will be practicing on my own.

Even though I did this digitally, I tried to follow the same steps a traditional artist would as outlined by my professor, Don Lagerberg. This had mixed results, the digital medium isn't paper and charcoal, I should have worked in simpler grey scales as I spent too much time learning the digital charcoal and trying to replicate the look rather than learning light and form. However, the basic principles of layered drawings still apply.

    Step by step links:
    Simple armature.
    Simple forms.
    Basic Anatomy.
    Cleaned lines transferred to paper.
    Detail in sanguine.

Image 2: Color study, live model under warm light. we didn't have enough time to do a full detailed painting. Once again, I was fighting with the digital medium.

    Step by step:
    Initial sketch.
    Shadow mass and face detail.
    Color lay in.
For the final, from feedback in class, I added transition tones and a little blending. I need to do a lot more work in this.

Image 3: Color stury, live model under cool light. Once again, we were short on time after a long lecture. Still fighting with digital.

    Step by step:
    Basic form sketch.
    Detailed face, and basic anatomy.
    First color lay in.
    Some touch ups.
Final image has detail work on face, hair.

After all this, I'm going back to traditional until my art fundamentals are better. With digital, I'm too easily distracted by doing things all at once like blending early, instead of learning to see, choose, and then place colors.

Simply put, very disappointed in myself this segment. I just haven't been drawing and painting every day, not even weekly. If not for class I likely wouldn't be drawing or painting. Time to set aside everything, video games, web, fear, etc... and just draw. Otherwise, the reality is that I'm going into a competitive industry (concept art) very soon and I'm simply not up to the professional level.
