Jakers Hey man, thanks for the observations. I had bumped on that prob before about not rendering different materials. Probably I got carried away. Right now I can only think that materials renders depend on the texture and how light behaves on them. Very good observations, I will keep that in mind. About the cast shadows, I understand what you are saying but it was more of a conscious choice since didn't quite like the cast shadow on the guy from the woman, didn't think it added that much. Well, I better plan my composition better next time.
Sealegs Thanks man. DS colors is fun!
Schlichte Dude, glad to hear from you and thanks for the call. Congrats on the job and hopefully see you soon on campus again. But I am not drinking like last time!! lol

Lately, I been trying to be more serious with my studies and pick up Bridgmans Complete Guide to Drawing from Life from the library. To be honest, I am copying his sketches from the book and tried to understand them, though sometimes I am not very sure what should I exactly understand from each. Gotta think about it and any suggestions are welcome.
Also got some Loomis done, mainly to understand general proportions. Last thing, with CouchPotato and probably Sawa (sketchbook buddies), we are doing some Master Paintings, starting with a Rembrandt one. This is still a WIP, probably finished by the end of the week. I just found the head is too big and the colors may be really way off. What happens is that in order to avoid any temptation for color picking I am displaying the master painting on my old desktop while I paint in my laptop. Should realize that the colors would look somewhat different and with different brightness once I see the two files in the same computer

Hey man, glad to see you posting!
As far as suggesting what you're lookin to learn from Bridgmans: Maybe pay attention to the way he deals with weight, and the way he blocks out the forms... Personally, that's what I find very useful!
I like your Rembrandt painting, though your values are a little off. Try blurring your eyes (or making the image grayscale) and have a look at what values are popping out. Rembrandt's version is overall much darker. Using two different monitors probably didn't help :-)
    Keep it up dude!

Halfmonk is dead on. I am also doing a lot of Bridgman studies in my sketchbook for this exact reason. All of his figures look like they have SUBSTANCE. They own their space.

I like your SB. A large variation in work and style which says you're kind of at the same stage that I am - trying to figure it all out and find your own voice. Keep going! I want MORE! lol.

    hey there!1
bridgeman is coming off really nice! though i second what halfmonk said
maybe you could also start doing those studies on a bigger format since its way harder to keep the proportions right then!
also good work on the rembrandt painting, though the 2 monitors really didnt help lol... cant wait to get started on that one myself

I'm guessing the programming shit is keeping you from all the good art stuff Andres, lol.

Thanks for dropping by my sb. I wrote a few things on how I thought our master studies went in sawa's sb. Just take a peek man!

Halfmonk Thanks man on the pointers, I will keep that in mind. So far, I like his gestural approach and lines. Also the ideas he discussed are very deep
snubbed Thanks for stopping by man and appreciate the feedback.
Sawa That's true about the two monitors on two PCs, I'll fix that one up soon.
CouchPotato Nice pointers on Sawa's SB. I will improve on the similarity and colors as well.

So time to update with some more studies, including some exercise from Seedling's perspective 101, and a storyboard that came up as a project last tuesday. It is a storyboard for a video class I am taking and my group will be recording it with actual people and the silhouetted style. The wii remote bg is supposed to be different symbols popping out during the sequences.

I will upload some life drawings tomorrow when I take some pictures.

    hola
hehe all these studies are really coming off great! i see a lot of progress in them! the first 2 studies are really looking good. nice perspective study on that girl
theses studies from masters and books etc seem to help you a lot on your life drawings as well, since they're much better than your previous ones. especially the girls with the hoop so just go on with all those studies!
and nice folding on the monk though maybe it could need some more lighter areas. generally, your charocal works tend to be quite dark... maybe next time imagine where the lighter areas are supposed to be before you start rendering and then leave them out until the end or smth (lol i have the same problem when drawing with charocal so i better shut up here )

Damn, those figure drawings are great! I also like your master's studies a lot, they're very impressive, both the painting and life drawings. The charchoal pictures are good too, they've got so much depth and life to them. Nice sb

Sawa Thanks for the support buddy. Yeah studies have help some especially when you actually applied them for the real thing. I agree about your comment with the charcoal drawings, that's something I start noticing too. Maybe is something easy to get carried away since charcoal is such a fun medium
AsaB, JPC Thanks for passing by guys and for the comments

Some stuff from last week and other a bit old sketches. After doing a lot of crappy gestures, I start drawing some poses without references just to realize how much little "attention" I have paid in previous studies and life drawings, which is a good wake up call.

La master copy me gusta, me recuerda que deberia practicar eso tambien.

    Bueno, segui asi.

    hey dude
sorry for not replying for a while lol....
well first off, great to see the update on the rembrandt the likeness is much better now! also the colors are coming off nice, though the overall image could have been a bit more orange. well i guess thats because of the 2 monitors hehe if you want to push it still further i think you could add some textures to the clothing etc to give it more variations like in the original piece.

the life drawings are still getting better and better you really got that body proportion stuff now i think.

hehe and nice executioner btw hope u'll finish it in time, i have to work some more on mine too!

Sawa Cheers buddy. I got the thing about the texture. That's something I should work more on to make it look less photoshoppy. Well, I was expecting to finished that executioner but got caught into some stupid programming stuff

Not too much time to paint lately, so here's some LDs and a WIP of a piece I was trying to submit to the past Art Crusades. It still lacks a lot like textures and more refined lighting....

Rockhart Thanks for stopping by man. Good suggestion about the mediums, should try some more in the future. While I dislike ink washes because of the lack of control, pens are cool to use, though I have been trying on getting into Pastels.

Here's a couple of life drawings from last week, regular studies from bammes. Also, a failed WIP of the executioner sketch because I never could get around to finished by the deadline of last monday jejeje. Might work on it later on.
Lastly, got a bit carried away with a digital thumb for a self portrait assignment that should be starting this week. The real one would be made with traditional media, so that's why these faces don't look anything like me, just aiming to get the idea down.

Another update. Some hands and feet studies done from life, couldn't fill out the whole page Kinda redid the executioner guy to remind me of how badly I need to do a ton more of color studies. Also, rework the concept of the SP thing, the card on the sides are the designs going over the eyes on the bottom face. Lastly, a WIP of this project being done with charcoal on some charcoal textured paper. Any crits or suggestions are welcome.

    Sublimus Thanks man

Still working on this self portrait thing, I tried to have the front figure having a less static pose but chose to stay with the original due to how the rest of the comp is. Here is a wip as well with some close shots so I can get some critique of what might be wrong at this point and fix it since I still have some days to finish it.

Update for now. Been a week of ups and down for life drawing, a bit frustrated with getting proportions right lately.

A figure in a imaginary and abstract setting:

3 hour pose with very screwed up proportions

A better 3 hour pose with an hour or two of post work, mainly for the hanging paper things.

Size: 35.7 KB

The idea of this one was on having some image or painting projected on the model, time went so fast to detailed more

The self portrait thing finally done with a few closeups. Basically reworked the face on the right and change a few stuff there. Reminds me on doing self portraits more often.
