A female Komodo dragon gave birth to 5 young without the eggs being fertilized by a male dragon. Reminds me of Jurassic Park where the dinosaurs started breeding without the knowledge of the scientists on the island. Pretty neat stuff. Pretty crazy stuff actually hehe. We need to book a trip to UK to worship our newly born messiahs

In April 2004, scientists at Tokyo University of Agriculture used parthenogenesis to successfully create fatherless mice. In theory, the process could be used to reproduce humans after extensive testing and perfection. The alternation between parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction is called heterogamy. Forms of reproduction related to parthenogenesis but that require the presence of sperm are known as gynogenesis and hybridogenesis.

Oh shit I may have to take back that thing I said about virgins lol. With genetic testing human parthenogenesis may be possible in the future.

but i would have nothing against a women-only future as long as i can travel there and stay for a weekend

i think it is rather cool, actually. It shows a species can press on in sight of near extinction. As far as that female was aware of, she was the last of her kind (never seeing a male, and all) and yet she still reproduced.

A testiment to the persistance of a species. Very cool stuff.

In the Southwestern US there are entire species of lizards (Cnemidophorus) that are made up entirely of females. No males exist. If you live down there, you probably see them all the time: they're commonly called racerunners or whiptails.

These asexual species all evolved from sexual ancestors. So, while there are no males at all, the females still have to 'act out' a type of courtship in order to ovulate - one female 'plays' the male part and the other acts as the female and then they swap.

In an evolutionary sense, sex (sexual reproduction) is pretty fascinating. I could talk about it all day... but I won't
