    first post !critique critique!

    Hey guys,
I've been in the background now, for a while... enjoying all the amazing work that gets posted here.

anyhoo... I finally decided to post something.

sketched on paper, "inked" in PS and colored in painter9.

this is, more or less, the first picture I've ever "completed" in painter (after manymany try-get-to-know-the-tools doodles). I wanted the picture to have a real lush, oily look... and although im somewhat pleased with it... i know im just scratching the surface.

love to hear what you guys have to say about it!

I like it. The sedate pose is countered well by the nearly frenetic line work. I'm not as wild about the blurs on the red, nor that they avoid the figure, but that's not a big deal.

    More.

Hey, I like this too, I wish the color was a little more finished. It looks as if you planned on another pass. Know what I mean? But very cool lines and style.

    Hey guys, thanks.
He's a possible character in a comic im illustrating. i want it to have fantastic, slightly exaggerated line work with a rich oil painting color. really messy, but really lush... the kind of stuff john singer sergeant would've done, if he was door nail drunk... and missing an eye. i think it's on that path... just far from where it's heading.

the red smeariness: i agree... it started off as a test scribble, trying out some of the messy tools in painter. i just left it.. cause i thought it was kinda pretty.

and ill see what i can do to polish it up a little... while still staying within the messy one-eyed sergeant look

and ill most certainly post more, soon.

    Hey Panda,
I am a Mignola fan... and I am, no doubt influenced by his work.
my pencil sketch of this guy.. had his body really bulky.. and almost uncomfortable looking... so I tried to give him a more relaxed stature.
now that I look at it... I can see the resemblance there.

So yea... I guess it is.

This might just be a style thing, but compared to his arms, he seems to have a tiny head. =p I love the face though.

The world is filled with people who were given great natural gifts, sometimes conspicuosly flashy gifts, yet never produce anything. And when that happens, the world soon ceases to care whether they are talented.

    hey taboo,
    thanks about the face.

It is a style thing.. but his arms, i think, are a little too big... at the size and shape they are now... he'd have some *massive* mits.

    also, i have a question...
is there a certian brush type/setting in painter9 that works really well with sketching and/or linework. I've always enjoyed the look of the PS7's default brush. but have trouble finding a nice fluid look with the painter pens and pencils. i know they're there... but, i've only found brushes that produce really hard almost pixelated lines.
