umm, antihero, right? man, it's been a long time. You've improved! Some of your figures are starting to get that cool gestural look to them, and it's obvious that you've come a long way in seeing the 3rd dimension in the paper. I would advise to continue your proportional studies, and think about comparing things to each other. For example, the distance between the ribcage and the pelvis is a fist, and a flattened hand is about the same area as the face, the upper leg is about 2 heads, etc. if you memorize these, it will be easy to make everything relate to everything else in your drawings. Keep on going, and if you need inspiration, try the library. You can check out books of art and drawings, as well as picture books of anything you want to draw... and it's better than google.

Thanks for your replies, both of you.

Just wanted to let you know that i'm doing fine. I've been drawing regularly for quite some time now and its great, i enjoy it more than anytime earlier. The reason why i'm not posting here is because i somehow lost a lot of my drawing-exhibitionism. I'm just fine with drawing as it is and i dont feel the need to post my stuff. Of course this generates a lack of critique, but i think thats just what i need now. When the time comes, i'll start posting again. For now i'm just fine with filling my sketchbook, page after page...

By the way, i succeeded at the entrance test that i mentioned some posts ago. I'm starting on the 12th of September and i'm so totally looking forward to start drawing during the whole day and with "real" advice (not that its better than digital, its just "realer") and together with real people.

Thanks again for everyones reply, i wouldn't be where i am without everyone that contributed throughout this thread- you rock!

    See you!

    It's me again...

Wow, how long has it been?

I've passed the first six weeks of art school and it's been a blast. After all i think i'm ready to do some regular updates again. Let's start with a listing of some past works.

    Let's call it a face

    Selfportrait, pretty old.

    can you spell "cliché"?

    Makeshift Wings

    Ugly.

Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live. Those Who Oppose The Truth Shall Die.

    Some Doodles.

    Yeah, see you soon.

    Binary Me

It took a damn long time for me to grow somehow comfortable with digital painting. Finally. Still sticking to b/w, color still confuses me a lot.

This one took up some more time, which is good.
Oh yeah. Bigger update is coming as soon as i get to scan some stuff from school.

I've been sketching/drawing trees & bushes from life all day long.

    Bye.

//edit: whoops, seems like i'm having some identity-crisis. Might as well use "antihero" again. Who cares?

    Selfportrait Simplified

Still no work from art school scanable.
Heres another selfportrait. Tried to use colors instead of black and white and at the same time to keep the painting as simple as possible.

I don't like it all too much though.

    Cheers-

nothing but love for 'dem trees

Heres what i did at school during the last few days. The topic is "living space", which is kind of loose. So we had to define specific goals on our own.

I decided to draw trees since they are excellent living spaces for any kind of creatures, starting with insects and ending with ents... Sort of. I did not want to just draw them as a whole but rather pick out a part that somehow shifts from looking as a living space and a living creature. Somehow, i don't think that anyone will get what i am talking about...

Anways, here's a selection of the pieces i created throughout the last four days.

That was my first take on the subject.

I started with the sketch on the left side and developed some sort of a "tree-creature" out of the mere shape. Thats when i started to develop the idea i described above. The shifting beetween "living space" and "living thing".

I continued to strife around the school grounds and eventually stumbled upon this one, which took my heart within seconds.

    More sketches for different trees.

Another sketch that i really like. Couldn't develop it further since my teacher isn't too fond of anything that comes around too "creaturish".

A rendering, developed from one of the sketches displayed above.

    Same tree, different approach. line-ish.

I continued with three bigger pictures shown below. It's again the slug-thingy i sketched earlier on.

    Even more renderings.

    And one more simplified approach.

    I just had to...

Comments & Critics are much appreciated.
    Thanks for reading.

You have improved by leaps and bounds in a relatively small amount of time... I went from the first page to the last one, and I don't even know if I would recognize that it was done by the same person. This is really amazing and definitely inspiring... I gotta get my butt in gear! If you keep it up you will be going far for sure. You already have a nice somewhat loose, somewhat clean style that is appealing. I'm going to take some more time to go through this thread but just figured I'd drop a line of encouragement to you. Keep it up!!

    untitled digital thingy

@runtosaurus: Thanks for dropping me a few lines man, i appreciate that very much. I'll check out your thread too, watchout for a comment.

Heres a little something i made for my website. It's the new splash-picture.

If i had to name it, i'd name it after a line by thrice:
"wake, feel your worth, o my soul
speak the word, the word that can save us all
    "

It's basicly a collage touched up with some digital brushstrokes. I'm quite glad with how it turned out.

    see you later.

    Of Acryl And Frustration

Here are three acrylic attempts at painting the treebranch i sketched earlier on.

That's the first one, done this with complete black & white.

That's the second one, done yesterday. It totally shows my incapacity of dealing with colors & shapes at the same time. The colors are mostly just wrong and all too bright. I got pretty frustrated with his one.

This is the last one, also done yesterday. Tried to forget about too much of a shape and concentrate on the colors instead.

    C&C very much appreciated.
    Cheers!

what's with all the "alfalfa" pics, lol
    just kidding.
I just started reading this thread ,you can see that you are clearly improving .keep it up
    you're doing really good.
My advice, study anatomy books as well as art books.sometimes it's helpfull to know what's going on beneath the surface ,to help in the overall dinamic of the pose.
It's better to be remembered as the sand in the gears and not as the oil.

@6th Sun: "alfalfa"-pics? Sorry, i'm don't grasp that... Please help me.
Thanks for your comment and the advice, you're right. Some masters work never did no harm.

    -

Did another Acryl-Painting today, i'll possibly scan it tomorrow.
Here are some other things i've been messing around with.

The girl on the portrait is my girlfriend. I'm lucky because in reality, she's actually a lot prettier. She'll possibly hate me for putting this online, but oh well... i'm compelled to "art", am i not?

    Have a nice evening everyone.

    Digital Portrait

Where have all the orcs & monsters gone? I don't know. Need to get back on this question soon.

Give it up for another digital portrait. After a photoreference (not digital).
Plus i've got two more acryl trees done, will possibly scan them tomorrow.

    Heres linework

And heres a rough color (or rather tone) layout

    And thats the result:

Comments and advices appreciated, as allways.

It started as a sketch in class. I kinda liked it and finished it on lunch break.
It bears either the "Strange We Should Meet Here"-Title (which is a Hommage to Idiot Pilot) or just "Bride & Groom".

I'm in a hurry. See you tomorrow.

    Can you spell "sketch"?

    Well, again, stressy times.
    Heres a sketchpage.

    It sucks.
I'll possibly redo the bottom sketch since it's an idea i want to track.

    Oh well.

And yes, i still plan on scanning the acryl image i've been rambling about for ages...

    Hi everyone

Finally a post with some more content than just one line and one image.

Yeah, finally. It's the fourth Tree-Painting. Unfortunately i forgot to take the fifth and final image home from school. Anyways. The one displayed above is about twice the size of the previous ones (plus sketches.

A Work-In-Progress from the sketch i posted one day ago.

Heres some older stuff i forgot to scan.

    Well and that's that.

Tales About Fear And Vacuum Cleaners

    Tough day.
We've been discussion past works at school today. It was pretty exhausting.

Heres some sketchwork from theory-lessons this morning.

This little sketch was inspired by one of sparths latest sketches. Just gotta love his work. So much looseness, yet so accurate.
Anyway, so i heard about the topic of an entrance test being "vacuum cleaner". I was tempted to draw a hoover that looks a lot like sparths spaceship.

The following sketches are proof that i need to draw more from life. They almost make me cry, so bad.

Yeah, thats the progress drawing from the "Strange we should meet here"-sketch. It sucks. And i don't know why. Any advices are greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Wednesday Evening

Kinda late allready. Spent the evening together with my girlfriend (she is a nurse).

Compared to the last attempts, i was pretty lucky this time. There's still lots of space for improvement though.

We've got a sketching/drawing-evening planned for tomorrow, so the next update should be fun.

    Sketch Evening

The drawing-evening i mentioned yesterday turned out to be a blast.
We ended up drawing a lot of heads and a lot of fun kinda illustration-based stuff.

Heres the head and a sketch from school. I'll maybe add the fun-stuff tomorrow or some other day. Really need some sleep now and my head is aching. And oh, i realize that tomorrow is big traveling-day. That means a lot of time to sketch and no time to scan. See you on Saturday!

The left one was with just looking at the subject, instead of looking at the paper.

The back of his head (=hair) is far too big.
