here's some more ideas for Teen Challenge - Devil's Plaything

I was really sick of my crappy line quality, and halfway through this i decided to concentrate on cleaner lines more than the topic at hand . tried to sketch in a more effective style like the great bumskee

PS the torsoless lady is awsome. Would be nice to see more of her spine though

Whoa, so first, how do you do the comments interspersed with the pictures?
Second, I really like this black and white work. Your style really shines here, but your anatomy doesn't so much, but I can tell that wasn't really your focus. Haha, you have Elvis and then the rest is creepy. I really like the "Daddy's Home" one...even though it's pretty weird...It reminds me of Sin City...the glowing glasses...very nice! Keep up the good work. I think your line quality is improving!

bunny: lol thanks, the torso chick was kinda lacking in the "devil's plaything" department anyway
sketcheth: oh opps forgot to tell you this on AIM again...after you attach the images u want using the little paper clip button, click on the little arrow beside it to bring down a dropdown menu where you then click on the image u want to place where ever you want to place it

Aha! Thanks for telling me, I appreciate it...that'll make me want to comment on my pictures more...

The posemaniacs are really nice. But I have to ask, can you only draw that many lines in 60 seconds? Haha, or do you erase? Try doing these studies with different line qualities, very gestural as well as very single-lined. I can see that you established the line of motion with the quick mark for the spine, keep that up, i think it really helps my poses when I draw.

I like the plaything sketch. Just make sure you don't lose the idea that the devil's head is a mass there. Make sure it's not just a profile outline but you have an idea of the structures laying underneath and how they recede. I like the deteriorated jawbone a lot and the face squeezing is great. You might want to do that area of the face from reference though, but it looks good so far. What is the plaything's point of view in all of this? Is she just sad or does she have some disdain for the Devil? Think about what you really want to show in the emotions. This is fine stuff, keep it up, I look forward to the final. I'll be getting my sketches laid out today I think.

the posemaniac sketches looks good don't worry too much on the line quality or line confidence when you doing those, it will come in time with practice, the important thing is to capture the gesture.

Cheers for all the support in my book dude. Some cool work, some intresting use of line in the recent posts. Keep pushing with the anatomy and drawing from life.

Have a good time in Beijing would really like to visit both New Zealand and China sometime, hope the course goes well.

guitar fun. Very nice. It's a shame you won't be able to update too easily anymore. At least you'll be learning though. Take some crappy photographs of your work and do massive updates every once in a while, alright?

    Back!!!!

well i typed up a massive explanation for my absence and what happened during my past 2 months but i accidentally closed my firefox before i updated

so yeah here's the concise version, i'm now back in Chengdu again from Beijing , in beijing i studied with a tutoring class for highschooler's for a month then switched to drawing under these two guys i met who attends Repin Academy of Fine Arts in Russia (awesome school btw, i highly recommend looking at their works) who were on holiday and spent august drawing with them.

i dunno...i guess ill go straight to the updates:

    __________________________________________________
    Sketches:

I have mostly been doing cast drawings, but at when i first arrived in beijing i had no idea how to approach cast drawing so at first my stuff ended up looking like shit:

my first slightly more rendered cast (god so f**king sh*t now that i look at it )
    Name: sketch132.jpg
Views: 603
Size: 316.6 KB

my second one where i "over rendered" and made the whole thing look like a bronze cast plus really bad composition too
    Name: sketch133.jpg
Views: 636
Size: 340.3 KB

well not really a cast but a still life that i started but never got to really finish, i thought the chair was really cool though:
    Name: sketch134.jpg
Views: 592
Size: 323.1 KB

    __________________________________________________
these are the sketches that i did after i started drawing under the Repin guys, obviously i learnt much more as the class was much more smaller (before it was like 50 guys and 1 teacher) and i spent longer on composition and construction

started but never completed...moved on to a larger piece:
    Name: sketch135.jpg
Views: 593
Size: 410.4 KB

another piece that i started but never completed as i had to return to Chengdu
    Name: sketch136.jpg
Views: 581
Size: 454.4 KB

i guess this is my first actual "complete" cast drawing, around A1 size, took me around a whole week (spent like 2 days on construction alone )....had heaps of help from my teacher's along the way...i think i really learnt a lot from this piece
    Name: sketch137.jpg
Views: 586
Size: 507.7 KB

    Edit:
There was another A1 sized cast i did which was I lost and i also did like two scroll fulls of speedy model observation sketches that im too lazy to scan lol (not like anyone wants to see them anyway, most of them are pretty crappy)

nice studies and it looked like you used graphite, personally, I would have used charcoal. But what I am more interested in seeing is the oil paintings since you mentioned that you started using them in my SB.

OldNoobie: i use charcoal for faster stuff like figure sketches and such...for long term cast drawings i think graphite is more preferred , oh yeah you might be disappointed in my oils lol...i only did one and its pretty bad

    Colour Stuff:

Guache Still life...(the apples ewww )
    Name: sketch139.jpg

Guache still life, didn't finish this one, caught flu and rested in bed with a fever, by the time i came back the still life was already moved (im shitty with fruits i know )

Guache still life that was even less completed i was sorta pleased with the composition of this one, not the colours though

Lastly...i started Oils!!! its so fun and scary haha...i only finished one still life so far but i'm hooked! had help with the peach (it was rotting )and the pot near the end.

That's an incredible update.I think the oil is really great, great variety of color in there. It looks very true, color wise. The peach might be a little too bright and bold. It looks like you put a lot of work into all these! I like the cast drawings, especially the later ones. Excellent work, I hope you continue with that. What range of pencils did you use? Keep up the excellent work, bro. Really awesome.

Hey dude, the last two cast drawing look real nice! some of the earlier ones have some facial features out of places but it looks like you've corrected that as you've progressed with each. The paints are looking good, some subtle things going on in some places which really work well.

Keep it up, especially those paints

    Cheers

    and only 18 years old
well i'll be damned .. i hope my drawings get as good as yours before i turn 18!

    i like those cast-drawings a lot
especially the last one (the one that took so long to draw)

    keep up the amazing work!

sketcheth: thanks dude! for the cast drawing, i used 3~4B to start things off laying down the structures and such, once i start rendering i use HB, and the finish most of the latter stages using 2H.
OldNoobie: thanks man! the cloth at back could be pushed back more though...
krossj: thanks for the support man
markey2d: thanks man, you're working hard yourself
DanielC: thanks a lot for dropping in man the darker value thing might be cuz of the photo though...it was sorta taken under sunlight so the contrast was a bit off, next time i do a long term cast study ill watch out though
    Kir Nuyts: thank you!
Miro: haha dont worry man...i do the same thing all the time, coming across people younger than me who draw much better i envy people that started drawing from a young age
