been doing some sketching on a daily basis to try and work the kinks out after not drawing 'real' stuff for over a year...

These are all prismacolor on hemp paper

You have a tight and very controlled style which is very impressive. You use the Prismacolors in a way that suits the hemp paper very good. After all this praise, I have a critique, too: The woman of the May27b.jpg pic looks like she got three breasts

And I've got some questions, too!

Do you draw from photos or from life?
Which Prismacolor colors (Names or Numbers) do you use?
Do you sharpen them often?

Maybe try not to overrender in areas where the two colors mix so you don't get that pink-ish haze?

To answer questions/comments

Groove, yeah the 'pink' has to do more with me drawing darks into area they shouldn't be in, and then having it smudge with the highlights. Strictly an f-up on my part.

Jester, 3 breasts?!? LOL, well the collar in the ref material was this hig-sheen slik material. Looks like I didn't do a good job getting that across if it looks like she's suffering from triple-tit. The Prismacolors I've been using are the Tuscan Red, Indigo Blue, Dark Brown, Ivory White, and Dark Green. I shapen them after about every ten lines with a handhend 'twist' style sharpener, and tend to go through them very quickly. About two drawings a pencil.

huh, you're mastering those prisma colors really good...that woman is somehow falling apart from the rest of the stuff, though...is that a more quick sketch, or did you want to try out an other technique than the cross-hatching?
anyways, your crosshatching is great...and i absolutely love the drawing of that dancing...or at least handclapping man - it manages to really carry that emotion over to me...
you're drawing from photo references?

Very cool style with the anatomy, rantz. I like the specularity/light effects you get with the white. Really classical looking musculature.

Is this a life drawing, or from your head?

Brass - Thanks, I'm getting more of a feel for it, I think, the more I do it. All of these are from Photos found in magazines like Vanity Fair, or Razor, where there's good photo work. The torso (and the nudes I'm working on now) are from the lovely 'Anatomy for the Artist' book.

Golgari - trying some mixing of more than the dark pencil/light pencil effect with the woman. The failure (to me) on that one is the facial structure is all f'd up. I like the pencil work on it and the use of multi colors, but the structure is way screwed up.

hmm, i didn't even notice that the facial structure is wrong...not consciously at least.
i think what i liked about your other sketches was that they seemed so crisp & detailled, while in the woman-sketch, you rendered her in a way in which the tones and lines are much smoother...nothing wrong with experimenting, though, one should always try out different styles...

ps: hmm, multi colours? i see only blue and white...oh, are we talking about the same woman? i meant that "3-breast-one" (sorry, just lacking a better title

)

The woman you're referring to is done using colorerase pencils, which I did at first befor switching to Prismacolor. the lead for the colorerase ones is to hard and doesn't work well on the hemp paper, so it's a bit over rendered and undefined, yeah.

These are all brilliant, so all I will say is: Check your eyes, they seem to be your weakest point. Not that they're badly drawn (they're well drawn for that matter), but the eyeline is not always consistant and a couple seem to be cross-eyed.

whew, that last sketch of that woman looks really great
concerning those neverwhere-sketches, i'd say, check the noses...they look a little strange on both characters...

Holy frickin' funny... This gets my vote for quote of the week! Hehe...

Great sketches, Rantz. I really like the colors you use with these Prismas on a medium toned paper like this. Gives it a really nice warmth, is the only way I can put it.
