    Coal Golem

I've been working on this for the studio portfolio project and there's some debate over whether to have the green runes. I'm not completely done with .I plan to do something with the stove cover in the middle of him. Or maybe just a big graphic symbol of a heart and turn him into a CareBear. I need to fix that ground shadow.

    Carebear whould be awsome lol

i think the legs are just a bit to short comparing to the arms, and about the runes, they are cool but thee green color seems out of place, change it to red/orange or something

    other then that, its cool

Green runes do seem out of place, try to make the doorway a bit more dirty and rusted, like its seen far too much soot and ash!

Oh man, I digging the interior of the stove cover! Nice touch, really.

My only beef is with the legs and feet area. For being such a big and heavy critter, his feet don't seem capable of holding up all that weight, especially not with the iron/steel morning stars over his hands.

Of course, this being a fantasy piece, the rules of physics don't really apply, but plausibility is something to consider sometimes. This is really a minor quibble, as the whole piece looks great.

Believability is important so I've added a little length to his legs and beefed up the base of them.

His right arm(our left) looks awsome, hot-coal feeling all over it, but the rest of the body lacks that feeling. Maybe if you took the same appoach to the rest of the body?? or maybe its just that blah white background...?
your metal on his hands and helmet need more texture as well.

    coming along great!

I also am digging the furnace interior. My only quibble is with his itsy bitsy pelvis and legs. It kind of makes him look... more adorable than menacing. But if the effect you are going for is a contest between the creepy furnace and cute monster, it works.

Definetly liking the progress, I agree with one fo the above posts, add a bit mroe detail to the helmet, some dark subtle marks on the corners will amke it seem more round as well!

for me, a couple things are making him "cute".
all the rings/runes around his body. The ones around his chest don't keep in perspective. The rings around his arms aren't symmetrical and gives it the "I got dressed all by myself" feel. His lack of hips and bulk to the legs gives me a super deformed chibi vibe.

I really like what you're doing with the really hot coals for eyes, and I think you could bring that into the mouth as well. i think the furnace door with the souls/bodies could use some better integration into his chest/stomach.

Outstanding. Any chance of a background, or is this staying the way it is?

    Truly awesome stuff.

I'm not so keen on the see-through furnace door. A cool (er, hot?) fix could be to have a cast iron door that has swung open, like he's just stuck another soul in the oven and hasn't closed it yet.

    Looking nice man!

I think he could use some shoes. Maybe some big metal boots or hooves, similar in style to his hands. I think it would unify his legs with the rest of his body. I'd also dirty up the metal, make it look battered and burnt.

Agreed. I'd actually go even further, changing it from cool gray steel to something like warm dark cast iron.

Dang! I get overwhelmed scrambling for money and I come back with a ton of replies. I'll get to work on a bunch of this and get it up tommorrow, although I have to admit I probably won't be giving him boots. This is meant as a spot illustration so there won't be a background. I might however add some indication of a dungeon or cave floor under him. Thanks everyone.
