I haven't been my cruel self due to time issues- Rayman RR is going gold in days so i'll be able to do this properly.
For this round.. these entries were on my list of "no go to poll"

Well, I know everybody was gonna' pick the fairy hitman... but I couldn't resist...so here goes...

A mischievous and deadly fairy waits patiently in a candle-lit study. With a mere prick of her poison-tipped arrow, the unsuspecting victim is killed within seconds.

Fairy hitman . ....went for a more fairy-tale type illustration, no blood or anything . He's a fairy hitman and incidentally also pretty .. fairy .


Short story/ Description:

Little do we know that the world of fairies is far from idilical, instead hatred runs deep and intrigues are rampant.

No one knows (nor wish to) how Chul, the only fairy hitman known to be succesfull in this line of work, does his job. It is suspected that scents are involved, or even some form of hypnotic singing however once the paiment is made the mark's days are numbered.

Also, as much as they would, the mark's relatives dare not ask him what he does with the bodies...for the only time smoke can be seen coming out from Chul's kitchen is after a succesful hit.

i referenced bells and iron because traditionally, these are the only things that can bind fairies and disable their "magic" ... fyi

Here is my entry for fairy hitman, any critiques would be helfpul, I had a few ideas for Text man and his E-scale of justice, perhaps with some sort of kerning attack, but they uh… didn't work out. I didn't have as much time as I might have like for refinements, but anyway:



Once members of the Fay of the Savannah Plains, their environment was destroyed by encroaching farmlands, without the land to support them, they needed to find other means of survival. Scattered, a small group became assassins, praying to a wasp god of their ancestry. Due to their small stature, poisons are their weapon of choice, the most virulent of which, are kept in their satchels for safekeeping. Their contracts are primarily for other tribes of Fay, against those who would destroy their homes.

Himshee Bollocks: Fairy Hitshemale

In the not too distant future, Britain is at war with itself; a war waged between the magicks of old and the science of the future. To combat the growing number of magickal mischief, the Ministry of Scientific Preservation has enlisted the aid of a freelance agent from across the bond, Himshee Bollocks. The multigendered product of experimentation conducted on aliens, both illegal and extraterrestial, s/he was planted in New York's Spainish Harlem by the government, until such time s/he could be of service to either the U.S. or its allies.

Thanks to genetic tinkering, s/he has the ability to deconstruct her/im genetic makeup, transforming her/im limbs into seperate living organisms. This tinkering has also left her/im misshapen, gender-wise, and very bitter. S/he comes to England as an exterminator of sorts, to deal with their greatest mystical pest to date: fairies. These creatures plague and belittle the country with wicked and bothersome antics, and are one of the last barriers standing in England's way of total scientific domination.

Man, great stuff everybody. You all continue to inspire me. I hope everybody's hungry cause' it's compliment sandwich time!

Sady: I like the idea of this piece. I typically don't think of fairies swinging through the branches like that... almost like crouching tiger, hidden fairy? Anyways, the piece is a bit unfinished, I'd like to see more variation in the values, perhaps a light penciling in of a background. Otherwise, cool idea keep er' up!

Woodlandwalker: HA HA! vicious lil' bastard! Definitely gets the point across. I agree that the colors are a bit saturated and the forms of the characters need more value range and detailing to pop them out a bit'. Funny stuff though' (or disturbing?) and I hope to see more!

Salaryman: Well.. you got my vote! Beautiful linework man, beautiful. Ever heard of Eduardo Risso, the artist for 100 bullets? Your stuff reminds me of his only yours is tighter! I might have picked a more dynamic pose as this seems a little stale, but the overall design of the piece makes up for any minutiae. SWEET!

MisledTomisery: Great character, like the costuming ideas. Too much black, and not enough tonal range. I rarely use pure black in paintings, (if ever) unless it's something graphic in nature. Usually i keep my darkest regions between 10 to 25 percent at the begining, then, at the end ,I'll add only the darkest spots between 5 and 10 percent. (only guidelines, not rules!) This image is really close, trust me, if you add those lightest lights and darkest darks in selective areas, your images will pop out more. Good stuff.

cognition.sb: Love the looseness of this one, nice textures man. I would like to see more detail in the hands to make out what is going on there. It's also a bit difficult to make out a narrative to this character, Who is he? How does he kill fairies?.. ect. Otherwise, cool image and like the looseness.

Juanillo: Very whimsical, and comical. Like the idea and the color scheme. The character almost seems off balance. I'm assuming the large mass on the left is a leaf, but it's weight seems a little too close to that of the mace on the right. Maybe change the values on the leaf to make it seem more light, then the figure might balance more. Otherwise, love the features in the face and overall design of the character.

CollinSully: Well, i would have tweaked the lighting a bit more. It still feels a little too bright for a candle-lit setting. Maybe more saturation in the shadows for skin tone.

JustinOaksford: Like the idea of fairies trapped in the belly. Kinda' like a twisted-centaur-psycho-rudolph. Anyways, would like to see more details and treatment of the edges. The background is a little too loose to tell what's going on there. Original idea though, and definitely outside the box compared to other ideas here.

Bumskee: Beautiful stuff as usual. It was between you and SalaryMan, and it was tough. You have a wonderful painterly look to your stuff. I would love to learn your tricks (brushes, layer's, filter's..ect.) for creating textures. Besides maybe crisping up the right hand edges of the coat, I can't think of much else. Love the drama and dynamism. Keep it up!

Iolarnula: You've defininely got something started here. Nice pose and the lighting is getting interesting. Would love to see it completed though. Push the values and get some background in there. Cool mood to the piece, this guy takes me back to the sandman novels!

ChuckMate: Funny ass picture man! Love the colors and treatment of skin tones. Maybe some more detail to the shirt and pants, still seems a little loose. Also, the top and bottom of the bottle doesn't line up, might check that. Funniest picture here for sure! Coming from Indiana, this picture is all too familiar.

Oddo: Very whimsical. Love it. With some added ornamentation and detail this painting would almost be rococo or late baroque in style. Even though the painting as a whole is loose, i could use a little variation in surface treatment (details to skin, hair, ect...) Great stuff, love your style.

CheshireLyon: You've got a good start here. Like the tattoo and detail on the lower wings. However, you do need to check your anatomy, and push the values of the forms before you add these details. The forearm is a bit too long. (top of shoulder to elbow = elbow to first knuckle of middle finger. useful measurement, comes in handy.) Add a bit more to your background, it looks a little flat. Otherwise, cool idea love the sassy cat eyes. MEOW!

J_absinte: Awesome rendering of anatomy here. Love the handling of skin tones. I would like to see the darks pushed a bit more in the face. Also, the perspective of the plaid hat looks a bit wonky. The mutated appendage seems a bit disconnected from the figure, would like to see them integrate better. Otherwise, great figure, great textures and HOT! Jeeeeesus.

WHEW! Maybe I went overboard, but I benefit so much from these critiques. Keep kickin' ass a takin' names everybody! JIN KWEE!

Salaryman I'd love to know how you keep that so clean, I hope both of you guys saved a tutorial for this one, just all around great pieces.
