Work's looking fantastic, man! Really digging your studies, both value and color. One thing to note with the grayscale portraits though- they're looking good, but try not to overstate the midtones and modeling, especially on women's faces. Look at Zhang Lu's work for instance- lots of subtle modeling, but it looks extremely simplified.

Tex - To make sure I'm understanding you correctly you think spending more time in the sketch phase to really flesh out the details of the head before starting in with the values would be beneficial? Oh and truth be told I have a very hard time drawing from memory. With the reference there I can nail it, I better start making the jump though cause doing more complex scenes like my Team Chow stuff it was extremely apparent that I fumbled through the piece. I seem to be okay with the black and white single light source stuff, but color and more specifically how light affects the local color of something is very difficult for me. I bought a few books and am reading up on it, I hope to get a better handle on things in my future work. I sincerely appreciate the honesty.

Sid - Yea, like Tex said I really need to choose my references more carefully.

In any event, along the lines of what I saying trying to understand color in terms of value. This was a color study of an African American female. The reference photo was Rihanna, the likeness might have gotten lost along the way a bit. I didn't fully render it, just trying for color.

Carl - Here are a couple of link to vids of the last few pieces I did. I didn't record the Rihanna one cause I did it on my laptop. Hopefully this gives you a bit of an insight on how I go about painting.

I just started working in digital again, makes me feel like I need to catch up asap! Great work from this year. Do you attend some of the figure drawing sessions at the Palette and Chisel? I'm downtown for most of the week, I have yet to try going there, might this week.

The colours are excellent. Really good.
I've also been practicing colour and value lately. I find that using a full, defined brush (100% opacity, sharp 100%) is a great way to really get you to think about the colours and lines you're placing down. The end result is blocky and messy as hell, but it really teaches you to look at and observe the colour.

Awesome stuff. BTW, post on PA:AC some more!

Gamer - Thanks man! Yea I hear ya, I feel the same way about traditional. I haven't made it down to palette and chisel in some time, but with summer coming up I'm sure I'll pop in.

    mrwho25 - Thanks!

a_mckeown - I'll try that, and although I stop by PA almost daily I will try and post more

    Woah!
Felt in love with the girl with the cigarette!
    Amazing color work.

In the last piece i miss a cold color for contrast. Looks in my opinion to warm.
    Perhaps try another version?

    Greetings, silwynar

D Art - The last two took about 2 hours or so, I think .

Silwynar - It was mainly a value study I wasn't paying much attention to color. You are right though, adding a cool light source would have made it pop harder. I painted cool over warm in the cigarette piece.

    work in progress..

perspective on the shell is wonky, legs are a disaster, feet? what feet? left arm is growing out of his chest, head is cool...ya!
