    Platinguards sketchbook

    Hey guys,

Peter here. After some what of a rough start I have finally started to improve! I am really not proud of my earlier stuff but if you dive in and have a look at some of my later still would love to hear opinions and so on.So you know I study Games design and development at university. So I do digital art/ zbrush/ 3ds max and I am currently working in unity!

Its stressful but if you bare with me I hope to impress!

Nice to see you finally started a sketchbook! I hope you keep updating it.

I think that you should try to do more studies from observation to improve faster. Also, don't be afraid to go dark in some areas.

    Keep it up!

You are improving fast! That last drawing looks like a major improvement. I really like the work on the eye and nose. One crit - It looks like the eyes are indicating a head tilt, with one eye higher than the other, but the mouth and nose don't mesh with that.

I can definitely see improvement in that last one, but I can't help but notice you seem to be avoiding drawing the second eye in your portraits (doing the ol' cover it up with hair trick, I see? ). I know it's difficult (trust me, I used to do the same thing) but it'll get easier with practice. A few tips that helped me out a great deal:

The inner corner of either eye usually lines up with the edge of either nostril.
The distance between the two eyes should be equivalent to that of a third eye.
The distance from the eyes to the chin and from the eyes to the very top of the head are usually equal (this is a helpful guideline if you find yourself placing them too high or too low.)

Keep practicing, maybe do some studies, and you'll have it down in no time. Keep up the great work!

Taking andrews advice and am doing live studies hopefully this will help me get better

Date is 01/07/2011 (British so to those Americans out there swap the day and month).

adding this I have a bit more free time now so will hopefully be starting some compositions however also learning unity and 3DS max for my university course. If I start making my concepts into models then I will be linking my full portfolio. So ok, I kind of get the mushroom is pathetic but I had an hour and am practicing colouring and things. as usual have attached the reference image for easier comparisons and the like.

I have recently been looking more into my paint pallet, so if you ignore the actual concept as its awful and look at the painting your feedback would be most welcome

    Hay,

This is really nice stuff! I really like the mushroom study. The latest concept alien is cool. I could really see him with some kind of awesome headdress, telling everyone what to do. As far as the painting itself, I really don't know as I'm just learning too, so please just take what you want from what I say, but maybe a stronger silhouette and some darker values would help unify it a little?

    You should post more!

Thanks whetherby I will be hopefully, One of my lecturers at university is giving me alot of advice, so I should be getting better. I just dont post everything because I know it isnt all that good.

so was pretty impressed by myself on this one, didn't realise I had it in me. Its a good start with regards to colour, the aim here wasn't definition so much as being able to extract the correct colours from an image with my eyes. Rather than my usual assuming light and shadow will just be light and darker shades I get now that they are variations of colour depending on the light source as well as the reflected colour from the ground. YAY I AM LEARNING!

this here is a composition Idea I had, so does anyone have any ideas on potential colour scheme. I kind of have a rough idea but not sure I also choose hue and completely ignore the chroma.

    thanks for any comments guys!

Your work has improved very much! Even the faces are getting better every post. Your color work is amazing, even in this early stage.

    relatively finished now, opinions haha

p.s the top one is for the game, but as a thumbnail, so my advice is look at it from a bit further away, time spent over detail at the moment haha

Its been a while, I have been working hard in Zbrush, doing retopology is a nasty thing. Life drawing is going well. I know I don't post on here alot but I do feel no one even looks here! Not that I am complaining. I still have a long way to go. I am becoming less afraid of colour and am finally getting warm and cool and so on. Let me know what you all think!
