Thumbs up Congrats to the BLIZZARD contest winners!

    Winners

I just wanted to say congratulations to the winners of the Blizzard art contest... I recognise almost every one of you from either here, CGtalk or Polycount!

(Also remember to click to see the secondary prize winners too.)

I have to say I like that "Gears of War" looking Starcraft piece.

I don't know how they overlooked Minskee and Mr Nelor's, though.

For those who didn't know, Marc Simonetti, winner of the diablo contest, is better known here as "kemar".

chris - oh, impressive oO. Yeah, but I guess since blizzard seems to be expanding they are propably looking to hire new artists through this competition, and propably prefer those with a blizzard'ish style/look.
eh.. just my speculation. I dont really know anything ^^.

LOL! Quite the opposite. They just got themselves a shitload of great artwork that they can use anyway they want, for a fraction of the price.
Besides, they have plenty of artists on staff already.

One reason I think "contests" where all rights are signed over are exploitive.

Also, with that awesome level of work, maybe they figured Jamie Jones already had a Cintiq

Yeah, I wish Bumskee's had placed too. It was really gorgeous and sparkly.

Hmmm... I don't know whether to think it is exploitive or not... I mean everyone SHOULD of read the legal-eze before entering and know what they are getting into. I do think it is unfair that they can use everyone's art without the artist (if they didn't win anything from the competition) getting any compensation.

    What do you guys think?

If you can't read the contest rules then you don't deseve better. And people are creating work ased on Blizzard IP, so it's derivate work of Blizzard IP. So you can't even use it for much.

In the end I think that Blizzard is just protecting against people who want to sue because their work gets used for something (like displaying contest winners). They are big enough to not need to exploit artists.

If on the other hand some little unknown company, that probably doesn't have a big budget, starts a contest with all the "we get all the rights" talk I would think that it could be something more dubious.

With that many entries expeced the "we get all the rights" thing is probably just there to make the whole thing easier to manage. Especially as this is an internet contest and people can enter from wherever they want so contacting them can become a lot of work if you need some license to display something somewhere.

So, yes Blizzard as a big company gets more trust because they have more to lose. That's not really fair but that's life.
