Thanks!
Nothing real to update with, so here's two uninspired doodles for the sake of it.

Hiya Jabo! I really like your speedpaints, especially the last one! I wish I had Photoshop too :/
Looking at your work made me wonder, how much do you paint/draw from reference? It kind of looks to me like you're not learning as much as you could and you're pretty much just repeating and repeating all the knowledge you have right now.
But then again, who am I to tell... Right now I gotta go draw something I can't draw. *sinks back* d
Thanks Doyle.
I barely ever draw or paint from reference. I have a hard time concentrating when I do that and more candidly, I find it extremely boring. I'm getting started for university and the skill tests there focus on your ideas rather than your technical skills. So I'm searching for a more intuitive way to filling my brains than non-stop drawings of grannies in the park or nudes on a chair.
A whole bunch of people here in the forums seem to be so eager to learn that they completely forget that fun is the most successful motor. They see it more as a job than a passion. And that's what you see when you look at their art. As soon as I have to remind myself that I should have fun drawing, I'll drop the pencil never to draw again.
But you're right, I've been a little lazy the last couple of weeks, and it all looks the same right now. That's why I like switching between pencils and wacom. Gives me a fresh experience every time.
Checked out your sketchbook. Holy god you're 16? Not bad man, keep chasing those dreams! Love that guy. What I think is funny is that in this post of yours, I like the stuff from imagination most. Of course it's a little more sloppy and not anatomically correct, but the speech bubbles tell me that you had something in your mind when you drew them. That's what I wanted to say above, y'know?
PS: You're stuck with the hipbones, huh? Yeah, that's one of my major weaknesses, too.
*blah*
Love your enviros, great colors and lightning!
Cheers,

Very interesting enviroment
Jakian: Thanks. Nice sketchbook you got there!

Okay, here's some stuff. Nothing funky...

Look over there, a lava landscape!
*Yeah, that's pretty fresh and new!*

I really love your enviros - they're very sketchy and undefined but lighting makes them almost photo-realistic in a way![]()

thirdeye, even though I don't see where there's photorealism in my spastic strokes, thanks a lot!
Here's a new one, inspired by John Berkey and by looking at AndrewLey's sketchbook page by page. I love his style. No gradients, just planes. Of course, mine's not worthy. About an hour of experimenting.

Wow, great work! I love the colours and environments. Can you tell me how you painted those structures in post nr 63 and 70 ? Special brushes or texture overlays? Thanks and post more!
Greetings, Troll
Your landscapes have some lovely lovely shapes in them!
Though I have to disagree with you on the comment you made in post #65, for there is nothing dull about life drawing. It may feel so in the beginning - new, "demanding" experiences often do. Just think about how many people start a new hobby just to quit it after a very short while! But after getting into the habit, it will be no more boring than drawing from the mind. Often even much more fascinating, considering how much more depth brought on by life experience that granny in the park has as opposed to a shiny mutant monster just thought up.
I`ve gotta hop on the train and give my comments.
The env`s are great, the lighting is dramatic yet subtle, and it really ties the work together.
As mentioned before, it would be nice to see some characters.

very nice sketchbook - and as you know, especially great enviros. it's always challenging and motivating to see some kickass art from back home. where did you study to become media designer?
all: thx!
Troll Skelking: The structures are special brushes made out of photos.
dmitri: Sure, I'm getting your point. I might try it. Now that the weather is fine, I'm in the city almost all the day anyway. Wiesbaden has a nice park to sit down and draw.
Smokey: I've got tons of recent character sketches waiting in a drawer on my desk to get scanned. I'll do that asap.
Hanuka: Yeah. I'm still searching for the right people here in Germany to meet and do artsy stuff with. I never met anyone with a sophisticated set of interest and passion in art. Would be nice to find some like-minded folks. Where are you in Germany? Your art looks delicious from what I can see in your sketchbook!
I didn't study yet. Still hoping to be able to do so in the summer semester 08 at the FH Wiesbaden. Until now, I've finished my Ausbildung in January (Mediengestalter für Digital- und Printmedien, Fachrichtung Mediendesign. What a title)!
Here's another revised speedy. I like the blood. The rest sucks as usual. More to come. I'll scan those sketches I talked about asap.
And another one I forgot to upload last time:

Alright, here you go. Some of the worthiest sketches from the past month or so. Sorry for the bad quality, I fucked up the scanner presets and kept going with them for an hour or so.

Two speedies from yesterday/today. Really quick, about half an hour each.

Cool stuff here lately! i really like that mask in "pencils10.jpg", the seafood page is really nice as well! and your enviros are always fun to look at, of course.
you said "ambush_redux.jpg" sucks.. i don't know, i think it gets distracting because of the lightning on the dude, if you squint your eyes to see the overall values, you'll notice that he looks very bumpy and formless. if you would choose the light source and really think about how the light hits him, it would get alot better!
oh, and the brush strokes in berkey_tribute rocks!
Ksama: Yeah I'm working on tightening them techniques. I think I've been making some progress after looking deeper into good speedpainter's work. The guys over at Sijun always help to get motivated and to advance.
notic: Thanks again, Sir. You're right about the soldier though, The values are a big mishmash and there's no form being conveyed. I still have lots of problems getting the light painted the way I want it to look like, especially concerning form, not so much the color of it.
Here's a new one from this evening. Kinda got carried away with it even though it wasn't a good concept. But hey, that's speedpainting. It's supposed to be fun.
The last half of the painting process, I listened to the Alien³ soundtrack, which fits perfectly. As I said before on page 1, I love to imagine soundscapes when painting or looking at a painting. You can hear colors, that's pretty cool.

designboot, thanks.
Jason, good question. I have no idea. I usually block in the sky first, then I set in some fore/midground elements using the selection tool, working from low pen pressure on the farthest elements and getting more opaque in the foreground. Then I paint over the edges again in sky color to get good shapes.
After that, I often smudge the sky with a textured brush set to a high amount of spacing, ripping it apart more than actually smudging. I often use radial gradients to overlay with some other hues, setting the mode to Hard Light. You can receive pretty nice glow effects with that mode.

Sorry for the lack of updates, life and love has been a bitch lately and I'm barely able to get a clear thought. Haven't sketched much too, although I'm getting back to painting... Here's a new one, about 2 hours of work put into it. Dunno if it was worth the effort. At least it has some (wrong) perspective this time.
