Gustave Dore

My art teacher wants me to do a large illo of Cantos 24 from the Inferno,
and gave me a few artists to look up- Botacelli, Dore, etc.-

I knew I had seen Dore's work before, but I had forgotten what it looked like. So I looked him up on google, and
OMIGOD.

He has some of the most epic things I have ever seen, ESPECIALLY for way back - scenes that seem to be right out of Lord of the Rings or something,

He is just radical!

If anyone has some knowledge they can spread about him, please do so!!!

he no doubt has some of the best compositions ive seen out there, I've tried learning from him a few times, but i really should take the time out of my dad to do thumbnail studies of his work to just focus on composition.

Ah, yes - one of my fave Dover books is a reprint of his volume "London: A Pilgrimmage." Drawings and stories of an entire exploration of London, from royal gardens to the slums of the East End...

His stuff is truly amazing.

Dore's Illustrations from the Bible are definitely super tight as well.

Check out the work that he did for The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. Some of those images are just haunting.

I have just recently fell in love with Dore's work. Some of my most favorite are his Rime of the Ancient Mariner engravings. I'm looking for a high rez version of this:

the Dore illos for the poems of william Blake and the Milton are also awsome

and you might like The graphic novels of Lynd Ward. more art nouveau than Dore but very cool

I bought an old version of Dante's Divina Commedia, it's big and red, with gold title-print, in Italian and with all of Doré's etchings. EAT YOUR HEART OUT!
oh, and one of my favourite of these etchings is this one:


Doré's work is beautiful. he also did comic stories like the Adventures of Baron Münchausen. and of course, his bible-interpretations are also noteworthy.

I just can't et over how well done the clouds are... Not so much in the piece you just posted, but in many.. the clouds are STUNNING. I have never seen work created in black and white anything (including digital) that is nearly as captivating as his- I get so much inspiration from his compositions, they are so incredible- he was a true visionary. While some of his pieces are very classical, other seem not out of place if they were in a slew of movie scene concept art!

I might warn you that the illous in the Dover classic editions are not as crisp and clear as the original first edition publications. or for that matter of the original engravings. If you are near NYC and ever get to the Met Museum they ahave a numbers of Dores engravings in their Prints and drawings collection. I would reccommend seeking these out wherever they are. seek out the first editions in vintage book stores..just to look at, probably can't afford them, I can't
I have this one although in a 3rd edition and its not worth quite that much
