Here's another step in the digital one. Crits are welcome...currently working on the arm..adding more values and saturation.
Crits-
The arm of the last one have very boring colours, the hue could be shifted toward a more saturated colour in general, and the saturnation of it should be
increased as wellAlso, add some very warm spots, almost red! it might
look wierd if you add that now, but it will look cool after you've added some "better" skin tones. Prometheus tutorial is great, you should read it! it give you
a whole lot of grasp on the digital, and coloring over all
In the last pencil version of it, the forms very very easy to read = Good
In the digital one, you've messed up the forms a little, which makes em a little
harder to read, and overall it looks kinda messy, especially on that element between the legs and the stomach.
As for the top "thing" , that he have over / around his shoulders, its renderd
very different from the other stuff, also the colour isn't the same, and it comes even closer to grey = desaturated = badAlso, when I look
at the shadeing of it, it kinda gets "deep" and makes me wondering what forms that element really have. So I belive a "lighter" shadow would be great there.
Also, think of edges, to add realism, theres a link somwhere, heh , let me have a look for you.. here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...ighlight=edges
hehe read it , its very nice to keep in mind later (lol, like if I would be the on to tell you...)
As for the background, it feels like he is standing next to a blue painted wall. Add some deep to it, but very nice colour though![]()
hehe, keep it up! good progress on the digitals overall

hogarth would have beens o proud . cool studies man. dont be afraid to try them brother. nice stuff. will leave a proper crit later. gotta scram.

hey man, i haven't commented here in a wee wile, i've looked, oh boy have i looked.... but not commented
in this one the eyes one the dude at the bottom look quite large, and the stuff next to the gun doesn't read all that easy, but is it a guy with a gas mask thing? other than that the piece is damn nice, very appealing composition.
.....well.....as for this one.....not much more to say other than, genius in the making perhaps???
[EDIT] actually i thought of something to say about this one, all the clothing armour stuff looks quite plasticey??? nit picking to the extreme but just trying to help you improve, hell you may have done that intentionally, but just pointing it out anyway.
now onto colour, something i can critique more easily(not that i claim to know much, but enough to help out i think) i know its still very WIP ish, but some more hue variation, saturation and value contrast would all be good
at the moment the blue is all the same blue with some white added, the green is all the same green with some white added, and the flesh isn't quite as bad, i see you added some redder tones further up his arm. but still needs richer colours.
i'd say when you start painting over a pencil drawing, don't try stick 100% to it or you'll loose some of the energy. even overlay a slightly transparent darkish (saturated if you like) colour (like even at 80% or something) and then start picking out parts to bring forward with lighter colours. this is just one approach to take but i think it might help. its also the opposite of what you do with pencils really, but yeah
also
WATCH THESE!!!!
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...42#post1086942
they are REALLY damn good, i suggest watching in chronological order but it probably doesn't matter too much. you'll pick up heaps just watching him paint, aswell as get super motivated and inspired.
anyway, i'd also recommend doing some more colour stuff from scratch on the computer, even just try painting straight away without much if any drawing to start from, just start filling in big blobs of colour, really messy and tighten it up as you go.
cool man, just KEEP GOING, your like a machine!!!
Thanks for the comment mate, the two last pics are studies so i am in a studying mood because i want to improve on especially coloring, now i will study humans and characters.
Really strong anatomy sketches here, a tip about the coloring on your recent one, make it a little darker on the edges, especially on the arm so it does'nt feel to "cut" in against the blue, i would also suggest using a sharp brush around the focal points so it looks "edgier".
Keep it up!
Here's another step.
I can't thank you guys enough for the help!!![]()
I just... humm .. well i can't find the words but i'm kindof irritated by the arm.
I spent my afternoon looking at my skin and trying to add other colours to make it natural...but... aaaahhh f*ck it, i'm tired and need some rest (2:30 am here)
I really like where this is going, looks good. I think looking at your own skin must of worked pretty well because I think the colours look alright!!
Can't wait to see this one finished!
You could try playing with scatter on brushes for the flesh. Ive heard its good for that.

remember that the colour of skin, like all other things, it completely dependent on its surroundings. Realistic skin tones depends merely on how you handle the tones with a given environment. There are ways of getting an "averagely" realistically looking skin, that is skin that look realistic in average lighting conditions. Personally though, I find this often turns out boring.
I'm really diggin how this is turning out Dan, esp the red in the shadows. Just reinforce your highlights, skin is generally more glossy than what you have here. Think a very light grey-ish blue/cyan would work for highlights, would make the forms pop since you have red in the shadows.
stunning work though, keep em coming!

damn man, this last one is growing so foxy. Arm looks awesome.
Great studies too.
cheers!
Great studies mate, well handled. The characters looking good, the arm looks better now, afew people have already given some good crits, I'll try and give some out soon.
Sweet work
cheers
Your hand drawn stuff is drawn and modeled very impressively.
as far as translating them into digital drawings...
I guess one bit of advice is, if you havnt started already, to start doing oil painting (real paints, not digital) once you get used to how real colors mix, it makes digital work a lot easier.
Dennis: Thanks alot for the crits!!
Don't hesitate to give some more when you can
'Nu: hehe thank you master
Mentler: thank you very much ! Means alot coming from you
Kronos: thank you thank you .. ! The plasticity was voluntary =) Thanks again for those videos.
Lazy: thanks for the advice !!
Chermilla:thank you very much. I guess i should look at refs more often. The finished is coming later =)
Bendragon: ok, i'll try that one. thanks !
Brendan: I see what you mean... now i must be carefull when i'm choosing my bg..hehe
Thanks for the advices !!
Tiger: hey hey !! Thanks !
Shinryu: thanks. Glad it turned out better :=)
Option: actually i don't have enough money to buy some of those oil tubes. But i managed to get painter 9.5. there's that color mixing thing that helps pretty much.. or am i wrong? It looks quite realistic...
Thanks for the comment !
Here's quick study. Started it on painter, finished it on ps7.... was fun. Learned quite alot of things from it
Now back to the rocket man.
AHHHH! looking SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better!
i'll give a more helpful comment(i hope) a little later on today
NICE WORK!!!
will have to echo Kronos, muuuuch better and will reply more decently later! But real good work, keep it up man you're getting there!
ciao!

wow...i haven't replied here for a while but damn i must say your new works are getting better and better...cant wait to see the rocket man finished!![]()
Kronos: hey!! thanks alot ... lol
brendan: i'm glad things are getting better :]
PaperX:Hey bro, thanks for the comment. I haven't checked out your book in a long time either... and ca's funny behaviour's not really helping :s
Two new ones... i'm Almost there with that rocket guy.
Got a bit tired by him, so i did a quick (like 20-30 min) paint...youdododo!
I noticed (just now) that the values of the bright area of the girl's face aren't bright enough...:/
'night everyone !
just wanted to let you know
...
really excited watching you grow D!
hey man, like i said before great progress!
i have to say though that i think for the moment you might like to leave rocket man alone. your other quick things are looking a lot better and i think its because of the way you are approaching it, its weird but painting over a drawing can make you worry about what your doing too much??? if you know what i mean? i think you need to stay loose at the moment.
this one is really great and its already got more energy than the rocket man. did you paint it ontop of the black background? if you did then i think that helped, sounds weird i know...
the one of the girl looks good too, i think your right about needing some brighter parts on her face, but don't overdo it. in the rocket man and the torso you have almost pure white in a lot of it, which is ok, but i think it implies a REALLY strong light source. for skin to actaully appear white its either skin of an uber goth, wet/shiny, or the light is so strong that its blown out heaps of information(and that doesn't really happen through the human eye, it just happen in photos i believe...i'm a little out of my depth here)
maybe do a quick study from photo ref or from life and just try and get the colours and stuff as close as you possibly can to the original. (thats kindof what i've been doing in my still life things, only i guess i've been exaggerating the brightness a bit, you probbly shouldn't do that for what i'm talking about.
painter is closer to real paint than Photoshop thats for sure, but its still not quite like real paint... well i don't think.... oils are damn expensive i knowummm, acrylics aren't bad though, they just dry a lot quicker and don't have quite the same feel, but i don't know i've hardly done any real painting myself....
umm, don't know what else to say, just keep going!

I think the problem with the skin is too much white.
I punched up the saturation and lowered some values... not sure if it's what you wanted, but maybe I can help point you in a better direction?
Nice improvement on the digis!
It's important to keep your background color in mind when chosing your tones. Remember that black will make lights seem lighter, and white will make darks seem darker. Justins paintover has some good points, but it might look even better on a slightly lighter BG (and personally, some highlights on the arms). This is also why the colors in your original looked so desaturated, you put them up against a highly saturated color.
Rambling over, Keep it up man!

Goblin: Thanks !! Always nice to see you over here. Keep updating too
Kronos: Thank you very much for the continuous support man. You're right about the colours. I should be more careful, but i think that right now i should just do as much colours as possible... just like when i start drawing, just filling pages, nothing else. thanks again !!!
Justin: thanks for the directions. I got a bit lost with the saturation on that one...i think i spent too much time on it :/
Cup: thank you. I'll keep that in mind !
Here's the start of a nude.
I might take some time now to update again, to much stuff to learn and do and i haven't been listenning to myself alot lately.
See you guys later !

Lookin good, personally I'd lay in the shadows straightaway, it helps remind you of where the form lies.
I was going to crit you on your use of colour but that last one is a huge step in the right direction. Good use of different hues in the skin tones and the rendering is getting better as well.
You could try bringing the opacity up on that brush and using the pen pressure set to opacitry to blend for you. The result often feels a lot more solid.
Cant wait to see where you take it.
Awesome Daniel! Looks great man! Something you should also keep in mind when painting is stroke economy. Like with pencils, the fewer strokes the better. Keeps the painting fresh and alive.
As for colour, something that helped me a LOT was masterstudies. Pick an artist whose colourwork you like, then study him. Or pick 5. The difference between a master study and a photo study is that with a photo, you look at how it was made. With a masterstudy, you look at how it was painted, so all the colours are there for you to pick up on and study. I did a lot of work from Caravaggio, his colours are spectacular.
But your progress is really good, and damn fast. Keep it up mate!

Hey,
dont think ive posted on this thread before, but what an inspiration you are! Your drawings skills are a delight to see! This one is my favourite... http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1169219656. I like the wacko design in the background, but you have seemed to have painted over that. Which is a shame because i think the compostion looks good like it was. Keep posting dude !
Qxzi 8)
I agree with Qxzi
Great to see you pushing the colours now, its very nice to see dedicated people challenge them self, even more cool when people who are already very good and have a broad comfort zone does it, just makes everything more interesting!
I really hope you get a new page soon, cause... I dont wanna die because of
burned out brain cause of to much awesomeness in to less spaceI need
the loading time to rest you know

Skin tones look great in the last one mate and the rendering. Hope you don't take too much time before next update.
cheers
Hey DanielC
I visit your thread often, just wanted to let you know![]()
Your Pencils and anatomy studies are fantastic, love your rendering. Your digital stuff is improving fast. Can't really give you a crit there cause i'm not into it myself, sorry. Hope to see a finished rendered drawing of you soon.
5 stars for you![]()
