Yo. Keep up the anatomy studies, they are looking good. When digipainting, use the biggest brush possible for each area, only use small brushes when you have to. Do as much life drawing as possible, anywhere you can! Keep it up.

Keep it up! You were asking about connecting heads to bodies - the jaw connects halfway to the back of the head, right below the ears, and two bigh neck muscles decend from there and connect at either side of the "v" of the collarbone.
When the head is divided by thirds, the brow and top of the ears are at the top line, and the bottom of the nose and ends of the jaw are at the second line. Get an anatomy book and draw from life, oh yes.
And yes, I'm making due with a mouse, as I don't have a pad. I usually do cell shading with the laso tool (comic style)...

Had some boring class with a pen and sketchbook at hand...

I went ot the MFA Today, (Tuesday) instead of going to another boring class, i took some pictures and if yo uguys would like to see some let me know, they are of mostly greek/greko-roman sculptures, which are my favorites : ) i plan on doing alot of drawing sform them so heads up !

Yo. Drawing from statues is a good way to learn - try big charcoal drawings, you can really get good values that way. Keep studying loomis and bridgeman, they are always good for you. Your studies keep looking better, just make sure to apply that new knowledge to your other sketches, always be thinking while you draw. Keep it up.

thanks for popping by my sketchbook! I can see a definite steady improvement in drawing from life here, but as mentioned in the last post you need to practice that as much as possible so that you can learn elements needed for drawing from your head!

some statue drawings. now at my school we did almost nothing other than acylic paint and graphite so charcoal is pretty much a forieng substance in my hands. gota some learing to do me thinks ;x

another statue, im really happy having the ability to go to the museum of fine arts for free with only a 5 minute walk aswell

last one is an idea i sketched out, the middle man is holding his helmet in his right hand and it came out kinda wierd looking, i think it shows to much palm.

hi jdeegz,

nice start on your book. you are definately on the right track by doing lots of sketching and foundational exercises at this point.

i suggest you try varying up your subject matter with some objects/still lifes and landscapes. it's great to study anatomy, but it's also very difficult before you've gotten much practice rendering simple shapes. household objects like fruit and dishes make for very clean gemoetric shapes.

Nice progress dude. Keep going with the sketches. Try seeing those shapes. Do not draw what you think you see, see what your drawing. What I mean by that is observe the model or what your drawing and not looking at the paper too much. Hope that helps a little. Thanx for stopping by my sketchbook dude! XD

Hey, thanks for checking up on me again

I see you've already improved much with charcoal, but here are some tips to using it very effectively. The bigger you work, the easier it is to make charcoal stuff look prettier. Don't be afraid to smear a soft charcoal (like vine, which is easily erased) all over the paper and then erase out lights, while pushing darks with more concentrated stuff. Learn to use the side of square charcoal and you can get some very expressive lines - vary the pressure on one side vs the other for gradients, twist it to vary line width, etc.

The advice about simple shapes and focusing on what you're drawing is very important. Knowing your medium is nice, but knowing how to analyze and break down anything into simple shapes, as well as knowing how to render simple shapes perfectly, makes you a master.

I like the sketch of the horse, i think over all you've improved a lot since i last visited, keep it up!

Heres a silly tutorial i made to try and show you what i mean. Take the figure, you want to put light on it from the right. So you pick simple shapes, like cubes, cylinders, cones, and spheres, and use them to represent parts of the figure. Its easy to find how the light effects these, so then you have accurate and easy lighting. Note that you dont have to use the same shapes for the same parts each time, you can use different ones depending on how you want it lit. Get Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale. He explains it much better than I.

hey, ive got an Art history final in which i am doing a piece, not sur eif i should paint or just draw it, then write a short paper on it. earlier in the semester we all chose a work of art from the MFA and we have written two papers on it, now we have the third along with a project.

i chose this piece.
Cuirassed Torso

and now this is my sketch, i made it a statue infront of a coliseum type building the man on the left is feeling it and there is a woman walking in front of him a small distance off.

i think my biggest problem at this moment is his left foot, it seems.. wrong, i dont know. if you guys can point out anything else please please let me know i really want this to be great

Feet look okay to me, its his hips that are off. his whole right side (our left) looks too woide and his hip isn't right there either.
