Alberto Ruiz & Bobby Chiu Collabo: Mayan Samurai Woman

Ok here's a project that I've been really excited about. I'm doing a collaboration piece with my new friend Alberto Ruiz.

He's been one of my favorite artists long before I knew him and I have all his books. Check out his blog too ---> TAKE A LOOK

His take on the female figure is amazingly unique and original.

A month ago I met Alberto while doing the Toronto Fan Expo Comicon and took the opportunity to invite him to be a guest artist in next Imaginism Book. Due out in early December 2006. Topic is "Ancient Japan Sketches." He liked the opportunity and came up with the idea to do a collaboration with him.

So here is the WIP for this collaboration... stay tuned.

Also if anyone's interested you can check out other Imaginism Books or preorder the "Ancient Japan Sketches" ---> HERE.

Thanks but the Original Line work I cannot take credit for. That's Alberto Ruiz. I'll be painting it.

Here's another update on the Alberto Ruiz and Bobby Chiu collaboration.

Ended up changing the background after talking with Kei. I think it's a great change because now I have some great opportunities for some blood splatter on the wall.

It's getting a lot closer to being done now.

Yes,..it seems silly to give you an advice-being the "noob"i am- but as your character seems to look to the left , and the blood on the sword indicates a kill, the victim should be on her left, but the spray of the blood is" center" on the image, ..seems like a conflict between concept and composition !

Dang, two of my favourites working together?! I love alberto's lines, so fluid, and with your stylization and all... woah.

If i were to nitpick.... i think i liked the arm up a bit better, more flirtatious and sexy. She seems a bit.. stern/scary teacher-like now imo. I love the hair and the suit. Those are beautiful. The skin might need some attention, but knowing your stuff it'll look great when it's done.

    Thanks for sharing the wip.

I think this is looking totally cool. But, there are a couple things bugging me visually, one your responsiblility, and one belonging to Mr. Ruiz. First his: I know he's got a distinct style and I dig it, but that corner on her right hip makes it look like someone took a big bite out of her, it's terribly distracting. Yours: The way you've colored and highlighted the rear-end of her suit makes it look like the front should, I can understand if you wanted it to look too stiff for the crack to translate to the fabric, but it looks too flat and as if it swoops drastically down into her crotch, thereby creating a super-wide megacrack. Looking forward to more! Rock on!

Thanks for the crit RocknOats and everyone else. The piece is very close to completion now. I'm mainly just thinking if there should be more to look at on the wall... any comments, suggestions? Here's another update. Thanks for the crits and kind words.
