This was a test for a game company. I failed.
Would love to hear some feedback from you, fellaZ.
This is just my two...but
I think the anatomy thus far is confusing and unfinished. Not to mention this configuration makes for an unstable sort of walking gait. Perhaps adding a counter balance off the ass end.
Are the arms/legs locked out straight?, or do the flex at an elbow/knee?
If so, I don't see evidence in your render of such structures.
Perhaps also....render out how you feel the muscle/bone structure of this creature should be and then go from there and make any necessary adjustments.
Again...just my two cents.
Hi Chupacabra, just wondering what the game companies' feedback was when they failed you? I agree with Helzon regarding the anatomy and noshadowmaster about doing a few studies of this guy from more angles to help understand what he is more. Maybe do a movement study?? I like the concept so far, it just needs more thought, research and attention. Peace
it looks very unbalance, the top part looks very the lord of the rings mumakil´s basket,
i guess that in animals the tail is very importan to give a very good balance to any kind of creature. yours don´t have tail, so it would be very easy to beat it.
it would be very hard to animate something that looks slow, and very weak to fight. the power in an elephan is the size, but with this creature that does not work eather.
the very legs of the creature would be very hard to the little man throw a spear, because the visivility it´s kind of weird. it does not have eyes, or at least thats what ot looks like, ok, if your creature works without ayes at least it should have some kind od ears like a bat to send signals so it can "see".
I agree with the other people, the anatomy of the creature is not right.
Most biped creatures have their legs under their bodys, like humans, kangeroos etc. if it tried to walk it would probably topple over. Their needs to be some kind of tail to balance it. And I agree their should be some more details of its face claws etc. at the moment to me it looks very blobbish if you get what I mean.
And I think you should have put more effort on the side view.

Hmmm... from the drawing it looks from the front that he has 4 legs, then the side view shows that in reality he only has 2.
I would suggest that you first locate a book of animal anatomy. I have an old one with muscle structure of horses, dogs, cats ... all sorts of animals. Study these and draw from them. Learn the anatomy of different creatures from life THEN start to use what you learned and remember and put it into invented creatures. Take a week to draw sketches of just horses, apes, dogs, cats, rhinos, elephants, etc... then you can progress with monsters and alien creatures. Go check out the Art of Star Wars Episode one down at a Borders and check out the creature making section for Naboo. The artist creates many creatures with knowledge of real-world animals. Also another great book is the new art of King Kong. Chocked-full of great creature designed based loosly on real-world creatures.
With this in your skillset, you will be more apt to create realistic and visually dynamic creatures than those without this knowledge.
i suppose i could help chupa
but so much has already been said
at least you got as far as the art test
alot of people dont even get that far
hell i worked for SCEA for a bit and never had to take one.... weird
there are a few tutorials on this site about animals, anatomy and enviros
and this char is all 3 in one kind of
he needs muscles thast make him look like he actually moves ya know?
and as far as it being a concept, its ok too be loose but there really isnt any information here
if you want a quick explanation of what i mean i can do a quick tutorial after work
Wow, what a feedback!
Well, i realise now that i had one major problem: i was shit scared, excited and REALLY wanted to get that job. So what i did was all wrong:
i didn't make research (like i always do), didn't make various versions and then picked one out, didn't think about the functionality of the animal anatomy which i actually know very well (did studies for many years) and, worst of all, i tried to copy the style of the other designers who are already on the case.
The result a messy speedpainting, done to imitate others and not myself.
It's very embarrassing but i'll leave it here and let people throw eggs on me.
Thanks for a constructive feeback anyway.
