    Sapphire's Daily Sketchbook

Well, I finally decided to start one. I consider my deviantart site to be my daily sketchbook, but hey, why not have another? Here's what i did today... painted my Halloween mask.

and then glazed the eyes with nail polish...

I'll add more actual sketches later!

This was for a DSG, taken a bit further...

And now for a sketch dump of stuff of doodles from sketch nights of yore.

    old stuff- dump!

For some reason, the stuff I do at sketch nights I end up not liking at all... but then when I go home I do much better... go figure. Here's just a dump of some old work... then I'll start adding new stuff.

As you can see, I have a bit of a composition issue.

    i like the otter...
as i said on the thread where you were building your it, the mask is great! the paintjob is also very well done, though a bit too monotone. how bout some slightly brighter spots on his head, not just the purple. the original abe doesnt have much contrast, i know, but this is real life, and not a cg model! the original however does have some tones of blue, not just green! maybe one just cant see this on the photo... hope it doesnt whoever's back when this person wears it on halloween...i heard it was out of clay???

looking forward to sketches, cant be bothered to leave this site to check out your page, lol
    cheers,

I feel the same way Sapphire, but I think I know why my sketches never turn out great, cause I talk way too much, and walk around aimlessly looking at people's stuff, and when i get back there's so much inspiration I can't seem to grasp any sense of what I'm doing, and when I get home it's silent and I focus more on the art at hand. Damn that Abe mask is looking awesome, yeah you sure love yourself some oddworld. Made out of clay...Holy motha of "beep", how much does it weigh?

Sorry I love Oddworld too much...
No no, the whole thing's not made out of clay, that would suck. The first layers are plaster gauze, then paper mache. On top of that I added clay strips for the wrinkles, ears, around the jawline and to smooth out the paper mache a bit. I used stuffing inside the eyeballs and coated that with a fairly thin layer of clay.

Yeah, that's kind of what happens to me. Also, being surrounded by so many people, I don't know... it's not as easy for me to sit down and make art. I'm kind of a private person, so it's hard to find inspiration when so many people are around with all of their various things going on. However, I get home and that's when it all sinks in. Aah.

Thanks. Keep in mind, the picture is without the flash. Also, the "skin" layer I'm using for my costume to make the shirt, leggings, feet and hands out of happens to be a darker, drabber olive than Abe's real skin, but the search for the right kind of fabric was an intense, weekend-long process, and when I saw this stuff I went with it, and I want the mask to blend in enough with the costume body. there is some blue in the center of the face, just like Abe.

    Hi Sapphire!

Nice sketchbook, compadre! I see an improvement from the beginning to the last batch there. Especially in the colors. Great to see you pushing yourself into the paints. I really love that piece with the garbage collector guy holding the lantern, the bg gives it a sort of surreal look.

    Nice job!

I look forward to some more updates! Cheers!~~~JadeDragon

hey, you have some neat creatures floating around here
can´t give much c&c, but some of your faces are weird. In Erikathumbnail.jpg the one eye that should be smaller is bigger and in doodleset2.jpg the women have their mouths lying on their chin

Darkside: Thank you! I see what you mean about Erika, yeah. I am unhappy with a lot of my sketch night stuff, but I'm basically posting it because it's stuff I have done at sketch night, whether or not I like it. It's good to hear crits!

JadeDragon: I'm glad you like my stuff! Funny thing is, the stuff up top is actually more recent than the stuff on the bottom, though it's kinda mixed together. Perhaps I'm de-evolving?

Rolfe is a sexy beast rrrrraaarrrr, love his shoes, btw it seems that's the most detailed part are you keeping the rest simple so you can lay some colors down?

Yeah, I pretty much decided it looked weird to color his hair black, and not his shoes... so I went for it. I was kind of on a time crunch, so I'm leaving the rest to be scribbled upon another day. I'm also going to color it eventually.. probably after Halloween.

    Rolfe

I need help with coloring this image, if anybody can give me some tips. I want his skin tone to look real, not like a Ken doll, and I'm working on a laptop, which makes it hard...

I suck with color...but there is alot of color in skin tones. If the light source is warm, the shadows will be cool. (slightly orange light=slightly blue shadows, in general)

Also, his pocket is in a really strange place. Pants pockets curve up to the waist. Unless those are some fancy strange pants. Check out your pants pockets and you'll see what I mean.

Also, you should do something interesting with the background, don't just leave him hanging in purple space!

Keep plugging away. You get better one drawing at a time!

Too true about the pocket, I'll fix that! At first they were gonna be slacks, then they morphed into jeans, and somewhere along the way I got all discomboobulated and didn't pay enough attention to detail.

As far as leaving him hanging, no, I wasn't gonna do that... I just slapped that on for now while I'm working out the skin tones and the light source and all of that other tasty stuff. I wanna have a floor for him at least, and then after that, I'm not sure. If you have any suggestions for something cool to put back there, I'd love to hear. Always up for crits.

    Thanks for the comments!

    I couldn't help myself.

Here is a picture to illustrate what I mean about skintone warms and cools in relation to the warmth/coolness of the light. This is the one digital picture I took I never adjusted anything (even levels) on. The color turned out magical..

Yeah, I see what you mean. On my laptop, at least, the light source in your picture looks like a very pale yellow, and the shadows have more of a purple cast... shadows are supposed to be the contrasting color of the light source, right? Should I put more blues and purples into his shadows?

Posted these in the sketch group gallery thread, but they can go here, too.

Mosaic of a live model in class, made on the spot with torn paper...

Collage of different views of a model on the spot. I'm really unhappy with this one... should I paint over it?

Rolfe, now with a floor. I think I wanna make that purple blobby space into a wall?

Watch out ladies, Rolfe is in the house. I really like that mosiac piece very refresh and unique, oh I got an idea, how about doing it in colors, might look really good, and plus it'll help you with concentration on colors on the skin tone.

Hmm, color... interesting idea! Only thing is I haven't got the model any longer, so I would have to guess at the skin tone, which might end up looking disasterous...
