two things before even considering details...

You need a solid drawing - no amount of darks, gradation or mood will hide that...and once you do that and start painting this again - you need color- its very muddy.

Yeah... I'm not really diggin' the gradients.
-The swords look like floating chunks and the lower half of the character's body looks like it's covered in tar or something. Maybe instead of having him being engulfed in a gradient, have him standing in some tall stalks of grass.
    - I like his outfit and the scar across his eye is done pretty well
As the pattern gets more intricate and subtle being swept along is no longer enough.

The face has lots of detail, but nothing to draw your eyes to it. The focal point of the picture is the torso, which looks very very flat. Overall, I'd say the most important thing you're missing is value. Do a search for value exercises, and you'll come up with something good.

Basic idea of this is awesome imo.

The gradiants could be less muddy in appearence, but the look and feel of it fit the mood of the character... sort of dark and myserious. So it works, it could just be better.

torso is too long, and isn't centered to the weight of the body, if you sharpened up the details and put as much effort into it as the face of the character it wouldn't appear so flat.

Over all, I believe it is a good start. And even if you must begin again, the idea is still excellent!
