Post Signs Sketchbook – 1st Update Since Hiatussssss

    UPDATE 2013:

    Hi.

I'm Matt CA, there are lots of Matts, but I'm from Iowa. Dig it... we've got good soil.

You're looking at work from August of 2006. It's been almost two years. I've used the resources here to the best of my ability, which is improving everyday.

I aspire to freelance illustrate and design.

I love chatting with CA.orgers. Catch me on the vent channel or on AIM @ shinraisamurai

Work is in ascending order. Unless you changed your thread layout, clever bugger.

Help me out with a harsh crit or a kind word. I appreciate both.

I Matt welcome in SB forum
The shouses and the keyrings are ok, I think. But the anatomy have some problems, I suppose that you don't use a costruction lines for the proportions. Use books like those Loomis ( in the web are more exctract from its works -> fineart.sk ) for improve your skills
    Keep it up!

Nice start. I think you just need to take your time. The first tennis shoe is nice. try to sit and think, then execute. and if your work isn't what you thought it would be, come back to it later. see ya soon.

Dreamworker ... Yeah my understanding of anatomy is somewhat vague, I'm glad you thought the the objects were ok.

    J. Peakham ... Thanks for stopping by! Do the object drawings look rushed to you? Do I need to define shape more? I'm not sure what you mean by the last comment.

Listing ... Thanks man, will do.

camilografix ... I just have to go to the class now.

Life drawing classes will help you lots. You`re already doing well though, however you need to learn anatomy to improve in drawing humans. You`ll end up a better draftsman anyway. Work those lifedrawings and keep regular updates. Some loomis studies like dreamworker mentioned should help a LOT as well. esp together with lifedrawing classes

You're a good looking guy and the picture seems professional. I'd thought it might have been taken from some search engine for the effect.

Oh the importance of live models! The Human figure is one of those things you should draw from life whenever you get the chance. It has helped me abunch growing up. Learning anatomy, manipulating the materials, maintaining an awesome surface of the paper..all are very important. Thanks for checking out my SB!

Hey there, good start! Stuff from ref is looking good, so donn't forget those studies. Pay attention to foreshortening on figures while doing them.

    Unhappy

I tried a concept for the EOW but I didn't work it through. Any thoughts on the creature? I saw a man in leg supports and how his balance would have to shift, I wanted to emulate him really.

Definately go to the life drawing! Thats a great way to improve your understanding of anatomy. Maybe get some anatomy books too.

Your lawn drawing could really benefit from the use of a straight edge/ruler. It would really clean it up and make it read better. Only other crit I have really, is the horizon on your EOW pic cuts the paper right in half. Not the best choice compositionally. I'd love to see you flesh that drawing out though.

I can only encourage you to do some figure studies & lifedrawing. It will defenatly improve your skills if you're motivated to push it further and further.

The shoes and keys are great. I really like how the Space marine is coming along. Did you use a ref for the face? It's well done.
Life drawing sessions have been helping me make great progress, so I concur on that suggestion. Also try carrying around a small pad and doing quick studies as you travel around. It's helping my visual memory and gestural capture tremendously.
I look forward to the progress on the Space Marine :.

New life drawings and a few sketchbook pages. The life drawings are done on an 11x14 pad and I've had to piece a couple of them together, mainly the bookbag one.

Cool. I like the faces. The guy with the V on his forehead really stands out.
I'm also digging the clouds in the bridge painting. Try to paint with a more sure line, perhaps try using a larger brush for the highlights.
Nice studies. Keep it up :.

    Hey,

let me just say WELCOME and also... for being your first ever life-drawing session those are pretty darn nice. There are some issues, of course, but it's a great place to start. Since you don't have instruction I'd get a good anatomy book and start studying up on your own in your free time, then when you go to class you can apply what you've learned. You don't need to get a spend a lot of dough- you're just starting out. I think the Dover "An atlas of anatomy for the artist" would be great at this point. After that you can delve into Elliot Goldfinger and others... also the free Loomis book at Fineart.sk would be a great grab.

ISBN# for the book is: 0-486-20241-0

    Good luck! Keep posting!

    -Andrew

Nice first session. Great foreshortening on the last one.
Watch them proportions. Keep it real loose with basic shapes and then tighten them up after everything is looking right.
