Sorry aboot the late reply here dudes... It's been a long couple of weeks, having some problems at home with my old man vs. Goodwill... Strange for such a company to discriminate against those they say they are to help... but that's for another crazy day on another crazy channel...

Throtailer - I have heard of Riven Phoenix and his method and seen some of his earlier stuff when it was on YouTube... It seems reminiscent of Loomis' method of building a figure... I'll check it out further though...

    StarbonesCoffin - Thanks, I will!

Smartkyle - It does help doesn't it! I do have some India ink left somewhere and I do need to use it up before it goes bad... maybe I'll have something interesting later on...

    Ubar 303 - Thanks man!

    -----------------------

Now for what I did so far...

I couldn't finish up the COW... but this is how far it got... I think that stress is the epiphany of evil...

    Some more anatomy studies...

Workin the memory up a bit...

    And now for something different...

And this weeks current study... All about the hand... He who controls the hand controls it all...

That's it for now.... I'm off to sketch some more.

Hey Smartkyle... Yeah, I've tackled nearly all of 'em... I think the Ahriman and Leviathan are about the only ones that I conciously drew on that sheet... (I feel white and nerdy...) About the skulls... I need to do a refresher course after I finish dishin myself some legs...

But for now... A whole bunch of hands...

This page is using Mentler's 'Eye Cube' Measurement...

More wandering doodles... I've been itchin to do something I've been postponing for quite some time...

    MAN! Your studies are amazing!!
I never can grasp the simple study... I don't know why lol.
For sure keep up the good work and maybe one day we'll have to get on sketcher and you'll have to school me lol!
Also, awesome CoW! As you saw I was in a half-assed attempt to join in on that EoW you were in, but it just didn't work out. I also tried for ChOW but that didn't work out either UGGHH /sigh lol
Anyways, keep up the good work and I hope to see you around and see more!

It's been a while... Been busy workin the bottega...

Malakai - I did see your attempt, it looked promising. I hope to see ya at the Sketcher.

    Imperfection - Thanks dude.

Heres the average majority of the work that I've been doing recently...

Some practical concept art (c) Shawn D.

As I said earlier, I've been workin the bottega @ TSoFA. I'm rather glad to have this class, not to mention that it's free.

Here is a few pages from what I've done at the bottega...
Most of these are control exersises for learning hand positions and making use of the full arm...

Good idea those control excersizes. I was looking for new methods then drawing eclipses and long strokes. Good luck with that.

Another year almost gone... I feel a bit satisfied with myself for this year... Could be better, could be alot worse. The main thing is that I've at least tried to sketch and draw daily for 365 days (give or take a few days off to clean up 'round the house) The main thing is that I feel is that I've improved substatially since over a year back and still have more to go.

    -- Whitevillage --
    It's all about control dude!

These exersizes are meant to help teach the basics of drawing, to put it bluntly, Each one compliments the next. The earlier line exersizes help in improving Linear quality for both straight and curved lines as well as different ways to use the drawing tool... (The main thing is that noone should draw as they write) , then put into the maze that helps with hand/eye co-ordination and let the foundation settle some more.

This continues on into learning how to draw a proper "cube" that is right in front of you... This could be simply put as going from point to line, line to plane...

    And plane to form...

Because a line is only an edge of a plane and a plane is only a facet of a form:

One of the ultimate goals of a good draughtsman (should be) is to create and understand how to create the illusion of form in space to a degree that someone will automatically recognize it as it is without having to guess. At least that is my belief.

I wish everyone here a merry christmas, happy quanza, or a joyful whatevath'hellyacelebrate, and a not too hungover new year.

Fantastic set of drills in the last post! really great stuff for warming up or doing 'scales'.

I think your figures are starting to lean abit too much to a geometric construction. Perhaps the next step is to sculpt the figure on paper with clumps of shapes? Maybe that doesn't make sense, but i think you've nailed geometric construction and its time to move onto masses etc. ?

I see what you mean there Kyle, treating the medium more or less like paint and letting the values describe form. I do want to try that but I'm still workin the Bottega with Mentler and I really want to continue on because he is slowly unlocking his methods ( I think that he's using it as a subtext for his Book of Bones project)

Don't worry, I'll be working with some tones soon enough, but to do just tones without recognizing the importance of the geometry to it makes it so that the tones just won't look right.

But until then.., some more boxes in 2 point and empirical perspective... (mind you my scanner died and I had to take pictures...)

I really like your figure studies too, the thumbnail of the two fighting is awesome!

Id say keep it up but somehow I get the feeling you will anyway

As far as studies go, you can never have to many of those
Keep it up. My tablet is on the way btw, so we might can finally get on with that sketcher work lol

    Wow thanks for the responces!

    Thanks y'all...

Carbono - I think that art is more than just anatomy, there is still the understanding of form in space which is why I chose to join Mentler's Bottega, With that understanding you can change what looks like a human form into a statue in the midst of a jungle and further change it into something more bizarre. Understanding anatomy is very useful for understanding the function of the form and thus helps understand the form even more.

MattLloyd- Thanks dude, I got the reference for those from Louise Gordon's "The Human Figure, An Anatomical Approach," I also use Hogarth's books and some Bammes... although I can't read a lick of german.

Kyle - If marker rendering is anything like brush ink rendering (see below) then I think I would have to give it a crack sometime soon.

Malakai - Cool dude, I'll have to get on the sketcher then sometime soon. Hopefully it won't be full of little brats that don't have anything better to do... makes me wanna

    ---------------------

Now for the works that have been done as of late... Sorry though I still haven't got a scanner yet... Soon though I hope to get one working...

some nice warm up style stuff as usual.. Looking through im starting to see a direction appear Ever thought of product design?

Marker rendering allows consistent application of tone with the right set (no streaks, same value). Check out Feng Zhu's older work, he used to use them before a switch to digital and they were amazing.

Actually, I've never really thought of anything like that as a possible career path, Kyle. I have had several useful ideas that I've put on paper that I just need to patent... I'll also give Feng Zhu a look at.

Sorry Malakai, mostly been workin and drawin, trying to work out someway of moving too so my schedual has been rather full...

But for the most part I've been workin more around the bottega trying to get a handle on some of the methods that he uses.

And I still try to do something a bit different....

Just glad to see you still around

Oh and some of those studies look kinda like alien heads and things. Kinda neat hehe.
And man! That pen drawing at the end is just nuts hehe, keep working on that one, lets see it go all the way.

    No wories...

Malakai - Thanks dude, I appreciate it, and yeah I'll have to get that one done later... (After getting a decent scanner... I'd like to do something with it that is sorta inhibitied by it's current position....)

Kyle - "ha HA!... Dingaling..." Thank you Mr. Sebben

Now don't underestimate the power of understanding form in space... this shiznit is probably one of the greatest tools any dude needs in his/her arsenal.

( Hope you dudes are getting what's happening here....)

( Nothing yet! ok... Perhaps another clue)

I'll let e'ryone digest this a bit more and come back in a 'minute'.

Man, I appreciate those studies for sure. I need to do some of those on that note... I've actually been studying hands alot more lately, as they have seemed to be my weak point. Hopefully I'll be able to work on what you have there.
Very interesting indeed! You'll be great in no time if you keep up those sort of studies...

    hello shawn,

Some really nice updates in the last few posts. I wonder how some of those cubes would look rendered. Would you be able to give the same space to them as you do now?
