Haha, there's a way to get people into your thread.

I think that the second row, first one and second one are the most successful. I think its because there are no lines on their faces...they are drawn the way you should draw women. Which, generally is, to use as a little detail as possible. The "less-is-more" approach basically.

Yo man, thanks for commenting in my sketchbook.

Your SB is cool man, I like the construction techniques you've used, did you learn them from a book, or tutorial online somewhere? (Gunna have to learn those myself lol) Also those women's heads on the yellowish paper are awesome, nice flow to them.

Construction wise I picked up some things from mentler. you have to register but once you do the Sofa has quite some knowledge on construction and anatomy http://www.tsofa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=224

The box thing I use is faulty still however. Just made it up by slapping mentlers front and sideview on it. It can help but its rather heavy on the construction side. Also it requires you got a good idea about the skull which I dont have yet. Feel free to try it.

Darn, got deadlines to finish. no time to work construction and skulls.
however its frustrating caus my sp`s show its about time to work proportion more

Dreamworker Thanks D. Animal charicatures etc are fun, but anatomy needs to be done. I intend to finish heads in a week or three so I can start working more on style and creativity.

Spent 4 days at a dutch animation festival, getting my overdose of animation. By sunday I was breathing creativity and the effect still lasted easiliy till tuesday. Saw a lot of amazing work as well.

hi, really make huge progress here. stick with the form more and loosen up some details like eyes, nostrils, etc. save them for the last touch-up, get the forms first. hope it helps.

Oi, Banshax, thanks for the SB comment. Coming back into art at this age is tough. You're expereinced enough to be dissatisfied with your level of ability, but your capacity to learn quickly is much less. The good thing is that your discipline and your ability to critically analyze should be pretty well developed.

Looks like you're making good progress tho. My secret to learning the human head really quickly is to have a pile of boring source images (much less thinking, especially if you just use tracing paper) and just hack away at them making piles of studies. You learn a lot about proportions and it improves your drawing confidence too (better hand-eye coordination).

Looks like some of your best work is coming from studying the details (eyes, lips, etc). Heads in three-quarter view, especially if you think in terms of an oval, are really hard. There aren't enough structural clues to go off of. Again, I think studying actual photographs is the best approach (hard to find ones that include the whole head though).

One comment on your technique: You seem to use your pencil or graphite more like a pen. Lots of hard heavy lines and crosshatching. I would recommend a much softer and gradual approach. A light and repetive stroke can allow you to 'build up' forms and 'feel out' lines, making things much more subtle and lifelike.

If you're going into animation, you should do lots of gestural studies (quick full-body drawings to nail down the movements). Mike Mattesi's 'Force' isn't a great how-to book, but it does give lots of examples on this subject.

I think its time you do an in-depth study from a ref and try to get it as accurate as possible, use a ruler to measure if you need to. A lot can be learn from doing that.

isair Great advice, I`ll be ignoring them details for a while. As you can see, i already put your advice into acting with this update.
Bludhund Wha! extra thorough feedback, cool! Learning goes slower yes, then again when it happens it clicks even harder. I had my doubts about tracing, with a little creativity and "die gestalt des menschen" close at hand, things turned out really well. I`ll try your suggestion with line, its a long process to get it changed but damnit i`m gonna do it. I`ll be sending another request to the school library for Mike Mattesi`s force. It looks quite usefull. I totally agree about the quick gestures, i do those from time to time when my skill has increased another notch.
comixnut tnx dude, glad you like what i do. i`ll be taking a peek at your sb soon to see how you`re doing.
oldnoobie I`ll gladly take your suggestion. Not this time but very soon. Perhaps trace the drawing a few times to figure out the skull. and afterwards really work it.

You should do more life drawings. I especially like the second one in #4...except the face, lol...I usually leave the face out except for basic shadows and shapes when I'm doing figures.

Also I like the spherical faces in #5. Like the Man in the Moon.

The little emotion faces (the ball faces) are cool, as is the angry teeth thing. Your faces are coming along nicely. So keep those up.

Been 5 days to Istanbul, turkey. Im totally down with geometric shapes, moscs, and drawing architecture. Its great to take a break as im completely ready to keep improving. Might post pics later.

That fat kid I`ll keep upping the time I work on a single piece. its hard, im a completely soaked with drawing lots and fast. Its gonna be a challenge to slow down.

Nice cats. Some of thw womans are pretty good too. How big are these? They look very quick and gestural. I should do some charcoal stuff myself, get ready for life drawing at San Fran.

Oldnoobie Tnx, still didnt manage to slow down. rather the opposite, heck I drew my father while he was talking, it resembled him close enough for him to be slightly offended that it didnt do his character much justice. Guess its a complement in a strange sort of way

Bludhund They are are about half A4 sized. Not big just drawn as basic as I could. I work best when doing simple things quickly. I mean, just get the pose / negative spaces right with as simple a line as you are comfertable with. Glad you like em.

I like the guy with the pipe. He's a nice one. Nice light and shadow, and I like that his eyes are different sizes, it adds character.

The thing with the faces, is the eyeball. I would say, draw a sphere for the eye, then wrap the skin around it. Sorta like the ones you had higher on page 2. That way, you'll avoid the "football" eyes.
