Amazing stuff man, that last post with the 4 nude women must have been extremely difficult, but you pulled it off. Really awsome sb, all i can say is you inspired me to get back to mine and do some more studies!
Hey, Jason, Imo in your last work, the figures could use bit more flesh colours than they have now, no way they can be so simmilar to the cliff onesOf course, it works for the overall mood of the painting, but the colors aren't very convincible.
Thumbs up![]()
Sweet man, getting lots and lots better and putting out sweet stuff. I dig this one http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...7&d=1286222553

Thanks everyone for the comments ,I'm always glad to hear that I'm gettnig better/on the basic right track.
@Justas: Thanks for the crit. I was hoping that the lightness and texture of the sirens' skin would help separate them from the rocks but I think you're right that I could have had more skin tones in there.
@Schen: I've never heard of that song but I'm glad i googled it, I'm on a big Scottish music kick and that was great to hearno the inspiration for that image was actually the desire to do a study of a model who was pictured by a rocky seashore. I also wanted to try a new way of colouring, that is a basic sketch set to multiply and very broad colours underneath to set the tone and more specific colours on top. I never did study the model much but I did use her for ref for the legs of the standing siren.

so I recently went and looked at SamC's sketchbook and saw how much more accurate/full his colours were. It inspired me to start doing self portraits from a mirror and study skin tones more closely.
![]()
These are the portraits, and man do i hate em. this is the first time I studied from a mirror AND i wasn't using my glasses (so everything was fuzzy) but I still think I could have done a bit better on these;

![]()
This last one I used my glasses first to try to get the basic proportions right (which i still got wrong and had to un-smoosh my face with the free transform) but a little way through the laying in of colours my tablet crapped out, for good. So the bad news is I have to wait to do any more colour studies, the good news is that sometime next month I'll be the proud owner of a shiny new Large sized intuos4

very nice works man!
Jason, these are all pretty amazing man! I'm drooling over the siren illustration, the lighting, everything! Looking at your self portraits from mirrors, I really like the one that you took your glasses off to do. I think the muted oranges and the blue-grays on your cheek and forehead play off each other really well. The one with the dark purple for the shadows around the eyes works really well as well. Keep 'em coming!
Three things:
1) Nice update.
2) The noses on your self portraits look out of perspective on like all of them. I almost thought you had a crooked nose until I realized it was off in different directions.
3) UPDATE MORE OFTEN!

I dont know if i have ever visited your sketchbook, and if thats the case i am very shamed of myself! your hard work is really paying off and improvement here is evident! thank you for sharing
Just wanna say thanks for being an inspiration^^
Thanks everyone for the comments, really appreciate it. thanks Andrew too for the crit, I now see how the noses really screwed things up :/
So, yet again it's been a while. The reason this time however is something sort of beyond my control; back in November I was starting on what I thought was a home stretch of images created for a small publisher I was working with. I was under the impression that around when I finished these images the product would finally be published (I started working for them a year ago) and I could finally show all of them. Since I had worked on little else during those few weeks I thought "Hey, why bother updating the SB when I have all this coming out right around the corner."
So i finished everything up, BUT as it turns out we're nowhere near ready to publish this thing. I never technically signed an NDA but I'd rather not get a reputation for doing things willy nilly. So i finally made enough "other" stuff to post so .....here it is.

And some words of wisdom for fellow rageoholics;
A few things from my mentor thread
Some random thing I did when I became a bit apathetic towards art;
Some freelance I can actually show (I have around 20 images, most from last month that I still can't show :/)

Facial study
This one was done for the Valentines day event for Not Your Father's Pinup. She's essentially a Frankenstein, with every part of her being taken from a different piece of reference. it was a real challenge to make her feel cohesive, and natural looking under that light. Was real fun though
This last little bit was me taking my own advice from my mentor thread. Essentially I wanted the student to do a self portrait, write down everything he noticed going on with the lighting and colours, then create a face from imagination BUT using the same basic lighting setup.
What I did was a nude female study, identified the colour situation and created a female entirely from imagination trying to use what I learned. I think it helped a lot.

Beautiful nudes. Very inspiring. Totally looking forward to more : D
Good stuff Jason, I think your on the verge of hitting a new level with those last two nudes and the pencil studies. I've been watching your stuff over the last couple of years and I can definitely say you have had a strong consistent climb upward. Much love man.
Damn man! About time for an update, and luckily you do not disappoint.
I like the last study--I have done some similar to that where I paint the same image again from memory after having taken notes, but I have never done a new pose with the same lighting.
Anyhow, I echo what I said last time and say that you should update more often.

I am really blown away.
The progress is astonishing! As a less talented artist, unfortunately I can't give any "real" critique or anything, but I notcie something about the last female from imagination study, her arm might be a tad too long, and her face doesn't seem to blend as well as the rest of it,can't pinpoint why but otherwise it's a superb attempt. I'll keep an eye to this thread.
Jason, you are doing a magnificent job here!! Your practice keeps getting more awesome by the picture!! I love when you use colour, because it's so vibrant, but it also has that fleshy glow on the skin...I love that look. Excellent rendering, I hope I can reach that level at some point! Nay, I WILL! At some point. :3 On the second-last pic, there's something oddly flat about her face. It may just be the way the light struck (or didn't quite strike) there, on the bottom left "corner". I can't place it, but it almost stays on the page more than the rest of her seems to, including the hair. I love how the hair comes out. I could reach out and scrunch some in my hands!
Your really good!! You could help me out a great deal hehe, Youve nearly cracked realism... but theres always more to learn isnt there!
Thanks everyone for the comments! I had it in mind to update sooner but I got busy and didn't really hjave much to show. I did manage to get some older art released. Seems there's going to be a bit of a time warp effect on my stuff for the next while where everything is months and months old.
First some sketches. Got a little more into the pencil again. Didn't do a whole lot of real in depth stuff though;

Studies! while I didn't get any good pencil studies I finally got back into more digital ones;

And now finished images. The first one was for Not Your Father's Pinup Blog's WWF event thingie, where we illustrate various endangered species. Chose the Lynx vs Hunters angle. the last few are released work from around November.

Really nice skin tones study. The one right afterward from the imagination is pretty good. My mind gets a blank doing skin tones from the imagination.
Lynx vs Hunters...hunting furries O_o

I love the level of progress, christ nothing amazes me more than seeing page 1 and last pages- then going through and seeing the climb! Awesome inspiring stuff! Would love to have my own sketchbook demonstrate such an amazing progress.
