Tutorial: Realistic Perspective Renderings from 2D Line Art
Sketchbook
Hi Strela thanks!
Here are some drawings frome life, with our pregnant model Nele. Sorry for the low quality of the pictures. Poses were 10 - 15 minutes.
Fantastic progress here mate. Had a look through the whole book and theres a big jump on page 3 and 5.
The anatomy and figure stuff is ace and so are the paintings.
For the car drawings and concepts I can try and give some advice.
Try and notice what makes a car look the way it is intended to look by the marque or car maker. Use different angles to bring more attention to certain parts- for this I like to look through magazines and the expensive advertisements and figure out why car companies use a particular angle or lighting.
Try and not make the lines too thick or hairy. I do this mistake a bit where is something isnt working I overdo it trying to fix it and that will be making the lines thicker and trying to define it more which can make things a bit messy.
Keep going. Ill try and stop by now and then when I can to help.
Hi Bartovan, nice sketchbook! Your studys, especially those for anatomy are getting better and better. The tecnical stuff is cool as well - I really like the design of some of the cars. Litte crit: the vw-van in #237 is much too blur. It would look a lot more varnish-like if you use harder edges, to simulate reflections. The wheel-rims, you did for it are better. Keep on practicing!
Hi Engelhardt, thanks for the reply! You're right about the reflections; I'm gonna try to make them sharper next time.
Hi Seagulls, thanks for your comments! For the cars I have used the DVD's of Scott Robertson and so I learned to try to draw geometry first. I use these strict methods to construct a car. And I am a bit stuck there for the moment. I should try these different angles and work more on the dynamic presentation of the car. Hopefully some examples will come up soon...
My linework is still a big problem as well. So I did these sideviews, and I tried not to rush it, focusing on clean lines.
Some more figure drawings from ref pics; a few more animals from life. Hope you like!
Some more figure drawing from ref pics...
Some more cars, some from ref pic, some from the Scott Robertson DVD...
First off thanks for the comment on my SB. And secondly, i love your studies so far! they all look so natural, which is something i struggle with. Great job so far, i'll check back now and then.![]()
Hi Glaudarian, thanks for the kind words!
Here are some more car drawings. I'm learning some rendering techniques in Photoshop; stil a long way to go there...
Wow! .... See you very much praise the design of machinery, your human anatomy studies have been greatly improved, looking forward to ....
Hi Huhucg thanks for the reply! I would like to work as an industrial designer; so I still have a lot to learn.
Some more car drawing and rendering in PS...
I reworked the cars I did befor in greyscale...
cool designs, especially the cars. the line work on everything is really good and everything looks really solid. If your working on reflections theres a bit of a hidden gem in the tutorial section from a long time ago here http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=84904 , real good stuff on reflections.
Figures need a little more work, and it looks like you could use a little more practice with ellipses, but overall very good. I'll also mention that I found a really neat way to practice with blender where I chop models I got off the net in half, draw the mirrored half and then use a mirror modifier to check it. Since you said you have some experience with 3d and like drawing cars you can probably down load some free car models off the net and chop them in half to practice the perspective.
Ive found its a great way to get in lots of perspective practice, the post I made about it http://conceptart.org/forums/showpos...1&postcount=42 , some hot keys to keep in mind when Importing and working on a model are ,a (select all), alt s, alt g, alt r(clear scale, location, rotation respectivley), s g r(scale location rotation), ctrl j (join separate meshes), tab(vert edit mode), k (mesh cuts) .The program might be a bit tricky at first(I could probably answer any questions), but Ive found practicing the mirrors to be very helpful for me at least.
keep at it.

Hi Surfandsnow, thanks alot for the reply! I really needed that stuff on reflections. These are really great tutorials to learn from.
My figure drawing still needs a lot of practice and I noted that the alignment of my ellipses is off. I'm doing some exercises to correct that.
I didn't get around to practicing the chop method with the 3D program yet, but it looks like great practice. I work with 3D Studio Max and I'm making some test scenes to study the reflections and that is a real help. I'll post some results next time.
In the mean time some more figure drawing from life. One self portrait from the mirror. Our model didn't show up, so we had to draw each other...
Some moreheads an some figure drawing - from ref pics.
Some more updates; exercises on linework. All done freehand with ballpoint pen...
Good to see your still going with this mate. Been a little while.
I think it may work well to do some cars from observation and some from your memory If you want to make your own concepts. Play with the shape a bit.
I see the proportions in #252 look really good. I recommend you check out carbody design.com for the rendering of the bodywork. lots of good tutorials there.
Like to see some of your 3ds max models.
All the best.
Hi Seagulls, thanks for the reply! I'm still working on some basic perspective exercises and I'm trying to draw cars from ref pics. I will try to make my own variations soon I hope... In the mean time I post some of my 3D renderings that I made in the passed years. I modelled the car and the PCB myself. The other objects are tools for the diamond industry from the firm where I used to work as a draughtsman. They were modelled in a 3D CAD application and I imprted them in 3D Studio and rendered them. Hope you like them!
Some more loose studies, ballpoint, pencil etc.
Some more cars from ref pic:
Hi and thanks again for posting in my little book. I gave your drawings a good look and I see that you have a very good sense for form. I think that with drawing from life, especially landscapes and still life, you can increase your sense of form to high levels especially with using reference and imagination. (this is my personal opinion and I'm not a pro but I just shell out kind suggestions from what helped me learn.)
I say this because from your life drawings, you definitely observe form over 'shape' (3-d over using 2-d)
Keep at it Bartovan, I'd like to see what comes from you in the next few years!
Hi CrazyDude, thanks for the kind words! You're right about drawing from life: I should do more of that. In the Summer I go out with my bicycle and draw some cows, horses and landscapes. It's great fun; but in the Winter...
Anywa here are some more cars from ref pics; ball point pen, some markers and some Photoshop...
Oh wow, those 3d models are great! The bmw looks really difficult to model
The cars drawings are very good as always. The way the car curves inwards or outwards to the side you may not notice with your latest. But I know you understand the technique to make this as shown with the bumper curve on the rear and front of the car.
It may be worth your while to practice tracing a few from magazines so you understand this a little better.
Hi Seagulls, tthat BMW really took some time to modell and render; maybe 100 hrs or so... Good idea to trace cars from magazine- I'm going to try that.
Here are some more cars and a few figures...
Your car sketches are really good, I like most of the stuff on this page, I'll skip through quickly in some previous ones also.. I like the fact, that you are doing some quite old-school non-sport cars also, most of the people get really carried away, with really furuaristic designs, but it's quite refrehsing to see some cars that look more like cars, then spaceshipsYour figures have a bit developing room though, but you are working on them.. I would suggest you to do more facial studies, selfportraits, studies from books, portraits from life etc.. Keep it up.
Thank you, my Belgium friend,I came into this soon after the Nice to meet you.
Your design is very good, I am also doing the game design of the original painting, and later to work together.
PS:My English is not good, sorry~
Hi Liujie, thanks for the reply!
Hi Spark Zero, thanks! I try to draw these ordinary cars to get used to the shapes and I try to capture the character of these cars. Starting from there I will take it further to make some more modern designs later. I'm not doing as much figure drawing as I want to...
Here are some more cars. I tried some Photoshop filters to smoothen the linework a bit. And for one of the cars I used curves and guides to clean up the lines. The others were done freehand with ballpoint pen.
Great work on those cars! You make me feel guilty for not doing those kind of studies anymore. I can see some great improvement in your construction compared to when you started. Keep up the great work!
Liking the cars. Maybe just use bigger pieces of paper or smaller tip size for the inking. -A little on the cartoon side.
The figure drawings look great though.
