hope san fran goes well for you when you move there. tell me how it goes, yeah?

the portrait of the girl is looking nice, but i think maybe her features are too small? esp her nose. but i could be wrong since you're prolly looking at a photo.

I definitely will let ya know. Id offer people a place to stay if they want to visit the city but my dorm doesnt allow overnight visitors

yea something was buggin me about the nose it helps to have someone else point it out thanks.

james, its kinda hard to draw with your whole hand when your workin in a 3x5 moleskine anyway i get what your sayin thanks

heres the portrait with the second eye added. Ended up crappy but that just means i get to start over also a few more pages of bridgeman studies.

I like hp's lower mouth and the girl on the plane's lips. also, good likeness with the CA model. It was good finally meeting someone from the ssg. Next time we drink and draw we'll get more sleep first so some of us don't randomly pass out.

@Blue - yea it was good meeting you. And kinda funny we ended up in the same room haha. "some of us" haha yea if i drink to much and im not kept moving i allways crash. Next time we either need to be in public or just dont let me drink a fifth of JD, 2 guiness and a quarter bottle of Bacardi O and i should be fine

@guitar - Filtum i believe is what its called. Yea the more i look at it the more screwed up it is. I'll do another portait of her soon. my next portaits are of friends of mines son who died. Was supposed to do this a while ago but have been to scared to start. We will see how it goes.

@MF - thanks for stopping by

@Fish - yea i have alot of trouble with value. Im always afraid to make somehting too dark. I think im gonna start toning my paper so i can figure out the range easier. we will see how that works. Thanks

Heres some new stuff. Not much which upsets me. Been alot of shopping and holiday crap going on. Some bridgeman studies again plus a few doodles while watching "The Killer". I figure I'll also post my conquests of FYE and Barnes and Noble plus my awsome christmas present. Its a Julian full size travel easel The Book of Five rings i only picked up cause it has really nice original traditional japanese illustrations on every page and it was on sale.

P.S. is it possible to like asian movies to much?

    Hey man -
It already seems like its been months since the workshop... Good times, man.

You're progressing pretty well, but one thing I noticed about your portrait in your moleskine:

You didn't lay out your proportions or any kind of underdrawing before you started rendering. htis is almost always a bad idea; if you render a part and then decide later that it needs to be changed, you've put yourself (and the paper) through a lot of extra, unnessecary stress and work.

So, yeah. Plan your drawings, so more studies and draw.

if you find yourself not being able to use your whole hand, get a bigger moleskine or a bigger sketchbook then

you might want to watch how dark you make your lines, don't make it all the same weight, make some parts lighter. and consider using a mech pencil sometimes for the finer drawings like portraits...i didn't believe in using them until recently but it makes for hella cleaner drawings...

@wil - yea man it has. the next one needs to come fast >.<
That is one of the things i definitely learned by doing this portait. The one im working on now im attacking it totaly differently.

@hp - haha yea i was looking all over for a large moleskine thats why ive been using the tiny one. I did find one at Barnes and Noble so its all good now. Umm its all in mech pencil problem is, they didnt have B or F lead at pearl in SF (Frank wanted the F i like B) so i got 2b, bad choice should have stuck with HB.

Please check out my WiP in the Sketches and WIP forum. I dont wanna split up the crits or upload the pic twice so heres a link to it http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86182

    thanks guys

Damn, sorry I missed your updates man.
Bridgman's are looking cool, just try to do longer and looser strokes, using the whole arm (not just the wrist) just as James suggested. Swooshy lines!
That's quite a DVD selection you've got there, and I'm totally envying your portable easel-box

The Book of Five Rings eh? Didn't understand it, except possibly for the part about building a temple or whatever where he's talking about how to make use of various types of wood. I don't think any modern person can understand it unless they know a crap load about Japanese history. You ever read Eiji Yoshikawa's "Musashi"?
When doing form studies go for sureness, I mean draw your contours with exactitude, let your straight lines mean straight contour and you curved lines mean curved contour. Trick to doing this is after you've done your pencils, go over them again with pen with one clean line per contour. I'm always reading about line quality, but we shouldn't be watching our marks, we should be watching the effect of our marks.

@armando - I remember reading the Earth book a while ago and i understood not even 1/10th of it. I agree you may have to know alot about that time period and japanese history in general. No i havent read that book, i'll check it out sounds interesting. I love pre modern history, except the political crap. As far as Western history goes, Once america is discovered i kinda go "meh". I wish i knew more about Eastern History and would like to learn more but i dont really know where to start.
Hmm i think i get what your saying. I'll try it thanks

@Fedezz - thanks yea i need to get the whole arm in motion. Im still tring to get it to feel natural doing that with pencil. Charcoal is fine but i think im so used to writing with the pencil its hard to break the "wrist controls everything" idea. My new project is helping me too cause im working upright. More on that in a sec.
And i love the easle box, fits almost all of my random crap (stuff like fixative and gesso are to big though). Definitely get one if you need an easle, very versitile and damn light and sturdy too.

I saw "Ying Xiong" ("Hero") yesterday. Beautiful movie. Just visualy stunning. I still keep watching parts because of how amazing it all looked. Zhang Yimou is a great director i would also recommend "Ju Dou", its a drama but really great movie. Anyway, theres a part in there about caligraphy. I was watching the people do it and thought it looked really interesting and studying it would really help with brush handling (i kinda want to break out my Sumi brush and ink now haha). Anyone know anything more about it?

I started doing a Bargue Drawing. Mr. Whitaker told me in so many words to do one when he looked at my sketchbook in the workshop. I didnt know what he really meant till i uncovered an old thread from MindCandyMan on Bargue drawing. So i read all the fundementals and started on it using the image MCM suggested. Im about 2-3hours in and im still getting the outlines down. Im measuring everything very precisesly and remeasuring. Not positive if thats right. If anyone knows anything more about this thing let me know. I wanna get the book but $75 plus shipping is alot, anyone know where i can get some images or something good for this type of thing for alot cheaper?
I'm working very light so its kinda hard to see int he picture.

next image is just me goofing around with character ideas for HP's new TD.

    Thanks for stopping in,
    Kev

    hey,
bargue looks like it will be good, take your time on that one, the lines are looking better.Second one looks very rushed and scruffy , the lines are really scratchy, maybe try using very light lines easy to erase and go over them but only once .Or try drawing in pen a while, that way you cant correct the line.Something to try out.

    keep it up .james.

Mindcandyman's sketchbook thread has a lot of bargue drawing process shots towards the middle/end. http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...ndyman+journey
Good to see you measuring a lot, i think that will help you loads.

On a completely different note if you like japanese mythology and or zelda style games, you should check out Okami for ps2. I started playing it recently and its one of my favorite things in the world now.

    Keep it up.

wow i dropped to the end of page 6 >.<
i shouldnt let that happen. Been bogged down with getting stuff ready for my move and trying to do things i wont get to do on the west coast. Like go to the Rodin Museum.

@guitar - I kinda switched to a different pencil style for the stuff on this post, tell me if its an improvement over the scratchy stuff i used to do.

@fish- thanks man, ill have to uckle down and look through his whole thread now lol. Is Okami the one that you are the multi tailed Fox and oyu have to paint the world? I remember reading alot about that game a few years ago. looked really good. Maybe i'll pick it up.

    New stuff
Went to Center city to see Dave Palumbo's exhibit, David Kassan's work was also there which was really cool. Then hit up China Town (was so close to buying a chinese painting set, but i figured i have to much to learn in the western tradition to start on that stuff). Doodled a girl on the train. Went to the Rodin Museum and did a quick sketch of "Awakening" and the pedastle under "The Thinker". Started a sketch of the thinker but i was really tired and it wasnt workin for me so i left it out. I think i like The Legion of Honors Rodin collection better as a whole but this collection had some amazing stuff.

Next is a quick sketch of a cowboy i referenced after seeing the new CHOW. before you ask. Both pistols are on one side because the 45 peacemaker is single action which means you have to cock it before you fire every time, so duel weilding them would be extremely slow and clumsy so I figured he would fire them in succession.

last is an update on my Bargue. Im really hating the whole camera fish eye thing >.<

Your bridgemen studies are coming along nicely, I can't wait to see the Bargue study complete. You might want to practice some contour line drawings to tighten your line work. The blurry images hurts my eyes.
Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!! AN UPDATE!!!!
well my excuse is that the internet in my dorm is the worst on the planet (was litteraly 0.1kbps earlier today). So while it actualy works im gonna try and get stuff up.
Bargue is put on the back burner cause well actualy its still in PA.

I think ill split them up acording to classes.

First is Analysis of Form with David Choong Lee (amazing artist check his stuff out at www.davidchoonglee.com, or if you live in SF hes the guy who did the art on the windows of FS at Mason and Market). All of these are unfinished because we have to move quickly and multiple classes use the same rooms so the set ups cant remain after class. Drapery and still life about 3 hours each. Bust and torso where on my own time at a workshop where a teacher hangs out and helps if you need it. We actualy officialy start on the Torso cast monday in class but i figured id get a head start. spheres where about 1-1.5h and yes i need alot of practice on drawing a circle.

I have a drapery project i have to work on due in 3 weeks, I'll probably start a thread in the WIP forum for it.

Lots of improvement from last time you posted. Keep working those proportions. One thing i noticed is that many of your figures look stiff - work on that as well. Still lifes and drapery are looking swell. Looking forward to more.
