    Hey fish!

Whoa man, it's getting hard to keep up with ya! It's good your starting to do more painting and colour. I think you need to put some focus into drawing environments and perspective, don't see many of those in your sb.

hey man that picture shows huge improvment from your last

when you put the textures on i think try and go with more of a texture in relation to what youve draw
exp. tree - leaves ..where as you put square things?
if u did do that then just ignore me

    james

    p.s congrats on page 3

rayk - Hehe, i have the pressure of trying to get into art school looming on me, thanks, and ill work on that perspective

james - Thanks. I was actually using morphed versions of my sunset painting as textures, but i guess i didnt get rid of the edges very well. Ill keep working on it

Really tired tonight so ill post the figures first thing tomorrow, heres a perspective doodle for you rayk.

Here are some of the promised figures. Silhouettes for james, color for boredom, some conte, some charcoal. I was kinda bored because it was the same model again, but i think i learned something.... i just don't know what.

I see you've been trying some stuff That's the idea, experiment, experiment a lot, there are no fixed rules for this. Btw, your charcoal gestures are superb. Just keep them coming, it's really exciting to see the evolution of this sb.
    Cheers!

fedezz - its always a pleasure to hear from you, thanks for the support

This isn't really a "drawing" per se, but it did involve photoshop, and i thought it was entertaining. It was more editing, but i had fun using techniques that i've learned throughout my PS usage. I have some friends who really like sonic the hedgehog... this is for them.

Yay, perspective and figure studies always a good thing. Hmm, as far as crits go, I'd say just look at artists you like, try to figure out why you like it, and incorporate it into your work. All that measuring, working on value, and things like that go without saying because it looks like you're already working on it.

Blue Severin - Sounds like fun, i'll keep working hard

I was really not in the mood today. I sat around for about 20 minutes just smearing odd colors in PS, i tried painting in difference and some other modes, and eventually i saw an interesting composition. Once i started to get it down my program crashed and erased all of my work >.>; So i re-worked the compo to make it less "side view" like all my other stuff, and i tried a 3/4 top down-ish thing... anyway, heres the rest of the time ~1.1 hr total.

hey man, really nice sketchbook you've got here. you've shown alot of really nice improvement since the first post. your life drawings look wonderful, nice gestural quality in alot of them. I like how you are experimenting with a number of different media, great way to learn multiple approaches to pieces. I must say though, looking through everything I love the pastel gestures you did on the first page (had alot of dresses if that helps narrow the pieces down hehe). such nice movement in all of them. you're pushing yourself really well, and the only thing I can think to say is maybe to do a tonal study or two. just draw a still life only looking at the different tones; no linear work. take your time and be really patient with it.. really helped me get used to drawing with more contrast and helps gain a nice control over a media. once again great work man, keep it up!

nice enviros. you might want to play around with the size jitter on the tree brush you are using on those, and maybe add some foreground elements on the one you just posted. remember when doing landscapes that things get lighter and less saturated as they get farther away.
I like your life drawings the best, in this one: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1157739521 i can really get a sense of weight of that big girl. i'm not sure if it was intentional but it looks like she's starting to tip over the thing she's leaning on. either way it looks cool. keep it up.

artzealot - thanks for the good crits, i'll be sure to take them into account when i next paint. Heh, it wasn't intentional but it's a good idea to play with

Still not feeling good, and i still have figga class tonight. So today you get the school doodles and tomorrow you get the figgas. I was feeling tranquil when i did these - so i took longer than usual on them, probably ~30 min per page. I should really take longer on stuff more often...

Damn, those figures are looking wicked. This one is my favorite, you handled that tricky foreshortening just right. Crap, wish I could take some life drawing classes in this crappy country

That figure drawing is pretty sweet. You young guys are making me feel like a lazy bum. Don't use such saturated colors in your enviros, unless they need to be there, like accents. Look at sparth's landscapes, his colors kick ass.

it's great to see so many people with a passion for art. that really comes across in this SB. Keep on with both the drawing and digital. I believe that at root of most great artists is someone who has the skills with the pen and pencil

fedezz - Thanks! that stinks that it's hard to find life drawing where you are... i'll keep drawing them for you

Blue severin - Thanks, i looked at some of his stuff and i see what you mean. I'll try to take that into account next time.

tekdj - Thank you, i will continue to work hard with all media!

Today was kind of a day of rest - still trying to get over my cold. Here's another rework and some more recent hands.

hey man, that 1 hour pose looks solid. the hands could use a little work but i know that you probably just ran out of time. fantastic job on the foreshortening btw. not an easy pose. one thing that is holding it back is the face. keep workin' those faces in your book. once you got those down, and you get another hour pose- she'll be a beauty. keep it up fishspawn

Those heads... fantastic!! My only crit: the placement of the eyes are weird in some of the faces. I now, I now... the placement of the eyes is a bitch. Just do the routine mirror check to find the flaw, and a tip that helped me is to draw first their right eye if you're right handed. If you're left handed, the other way around.
And the palette on the last enviroment is sooo much better. My advice there: the dark elements on the foreground are too scattered around the edges of the pic. Try grouping them in only one place (probably touching two edges of the pic), to help the composition. And don't get carried away using only one structural brush (the rake here), but don't go over the top making it look like a brush set catalog , it's a matter of balance.
    Cheers!

yeh the heads show alot of improvment keep it up on the faces
on the digi because youve mainly used the rake on the same size i cant really define anything or see whats going on . So try ading in some harder edges and a litlle bit of detail..

    keeps it ups .james.

Blue Severin - Thanks man, i plan to

kuroart - Thank you! it's always nice to hear encouraging words

fedezz - Thanks, i tried that method for eye placement and it seemed to help a little - i'll keep working on it. I'll make sure to make some of those changes as i keep working on my enviro.

    James - Thanks, will do

Slow at work today, so here are some sketchzorz. All from my head. My friends are complaning that i don't draw enough clothed people anymore :/. So here's some stuff. EDIT: More work on that enviro.

    Hey Fish!!!

Awsome updates, your faces are really improving! The look pretty mad.

In regards to environments, there is definitely an improvement happening. Few points you should remember - most environments have either 1 or 2 vanishing points on the horizon and the third either below or above the horizon (if it's a straight on shot then it will be so high that all the lines are parallel anyway).

The last painting you did, one of the perspective lines on the bottom of the building points to a vanishing point in the sky which effectively breaks the environment.

Perspective is one of those things that takes a while to understand but once you do it's really easy and fun thing! My suggestion is invest in Feng Zhu - Concept Design 2 - Sketching Environments dvd from gnomon. It really helped me take my understanding of using perspective in environments further (I'm naturally environment sided so maybe I had less issues then most people do).

With painting, try starting out by blocking in the whole scene in grays and dark grays (can be a purple shade, blue what ever) to have a value range going. Then add colour over that. Hope that helps.

Keep it up, your gunning through this!
