more doodles and stuff
Last edited by Johny 5; December 9th, 2006 at 10:59 PM.
just some more stuff, my current sketch book doesn't scan well, the paper is kinda waxy I guess, and when I hold the pages up to the light I can see through them, and the pages seem to throw away like 60 percent of the graphite I put on them so I need to get a new sketch book with better heavier/thicker paper.
and the fact that my sketchbook takes a beating didn't help these scans either...haha. so sorry for the messy scans.
Liam Neeson's head, some dude on a camel, and a lil girl and a robot. I might throw some color on the little girl and the robot but I can't paint to save my life so it will probably look horrific afterwards.
and I threw up my final for the life drawing class I took last semester. It's a master study of one of Michelangelo's works. I wanted to do one of Frazetta's paintings but my teacher didn't consider him a masterto each his own I guess.
so from here on out everything I toss into this thread will be hot off the press, but I just figured I would get the ball rolling with some of my recent stuff.

the latest batch of stuff, the heads are from reference. That's about it, summer school is in full swing for me so it's gobbling up the majority of my time, but I think I'm about to start drawing in my classeshaha, more to come soon.
sweet, dig the pencil work!
Cool stuff going on in here! I'll keep an eye on this one.

hey thanks for the feedback guys,
I was watching a Scott Robertson DVD and he talked about how to create landscapes and scenes from abstract shapes, and I got so inspired I ran off and did some speed paints.
I am challenged when it comes to color/painting.....and you could even say that I'm somewhat afraid of color which is why most of my stuff is just pencils.....haha, so these doodles were a struggle.

It's nice to see you finaly finish a paint my friend. Overall I like it. A great first finished illustration. I think the folds could be pushed a littler more, they don't have much highlight so they are hard to read. Good job man. Keep em comin!

Looking good Johny, like that last update. Its painted very well and shows some good form. My only thing with it is that you could probably do something else with the background, darkening it, adding some more texture, to make the face pop more, right now it is starting to blend in some with the bg.
But overall good work, keep it up....

a page of heads 3 from ref and 3 from imagination
drew a sketch of a generic soldier in a helmet, but when I started to paint this thing I guess the Christmas spirit caught me. I started to think about what Soldiers that guard santa at the north pole might look like haha.

Mr. Fife
That soldier is probably the best paint I have seen out of you. Honestly I want to see more folds though he is wearing baggy pants and a baggy shirt and you sort of faked the folds instead of painting them in. Overall though man great job. Lets see some updates!!!!!!
p.s. Painter Indeed rawks. I been using it all week and I am really starting to like it.

worked on this for a while - too long in fact. I wanted to do something with a little or no local color. Lots of craftsmanship issues in this thing though, gotta concentrate on being neater. learned a great deal from this thing, Anyway on to something new.

Good work Johny!
I would say overall though that your main goal for this piece is what is holding it back...
I think some integration of some subtle local colors would help break up the piece and add some contrast to the brightness of the blue.
But overall nice work, i like the way the key is rendered...
keep it up

More in general I like your pencils, and the characters faces - keep em coming.
SB. p31 updated 25.04.2012.
3 characters, I was kinda of playing around with the idea of designing individual members of the 40 thieves when I did them. Also some anatomy studies from John Watkiss's book.
mr. 5,
i think too much line work is showing. It looks more like a color wash than anything, spend the extra few hours and do a nice painting. The pencils are nice, but ur not gonna get over ur enviro painting phobia unless you spend the time painting them. Don't be afraid of it man. Just push it to the next level. Cause right now I don't yet see this in the finaly finished section, it looks more like a first itteration
The piece is looking good so far, but I would have to agree with the solo man, I think it is still not quite finally finished material.
A couple critiques aside from what has already been side.
-If you squint your eyes, almost the whole piece just blends in with itself. All the values are basicall the same. The only thing moving your eye around the piece is the high-lights on the helmet and tanks.
-Too much repetiton of the tanks, the number of them is ok, but how you painted in the highlight basically the same on all 3, just makes it un-interesting. Also how they are all positioned the same, up against the houses, cannon point upwards.
-lack of background...just add anything to bring the viewers eyes back into the piece and not, question "why does it just stop"? Because now all your lines are directing the eye right to the vanishing point and keeping it there, have some lines that go the opposite way and break it up a bit.
-lack of humans, even if this was the end of the war, there would still be soliders around, looking for dead, etc...Even if they are just silhouettes, they will add just that much more.
I think you can have a kick-ass piece if you just spend a bit more time working in the details that really will sell the overall environment
keep it up man!
