Well, I've been trying to focus on specific projects lately rather than just drawing figures at random. So here is some efforts on a series of mythological creatures. I've tried to create orthographic views as well as a posed figure to give the character some punch.
as a side note, I've also been creating a 3d mythological creatures project along with some other folks as well...but that's another story.
so here's the centaur:
(done on a wacom tablet at 1024x768 resolution)
Heres the cerebus - a 3 headed dog
heres the griffon:
Heres the medusa:
Heres the satyr:
some good stuff here, i like the enviro thumbs but maybe you can push the designs even further with strategic contrast lighting to set moods into the scene instead of ambient lighting.
those mythological creatures are cool, the medusa reminds me of the ones in God of Warthe griffon is my fav
deadred:
Thanks for the lighting tip, I'll see what I can do to push this in the future.
Lately I've been exploring jesters, clowns, harlequins and the like for designs:
Just for kicks, I tried pushing the griffon illustration a bit further with tone and began coloring as well.
I was playing around with shapes and proportions in designing characters recently:
Heres another space trooper character design which was lying around for a while. I guess the idea was the alien troopers had long necks because they descended from a snail/humanoid.
thanks for droppin by my sketchbook mate. u r a beast when it comes to perspective and i love ur recent 'experiments.' i also love the poses in #71. keep it up!
sweet!![]()
I tried pushing the medusa and cerebus images a bit further:
Well I've been kinda busy with a new job lately.
So to keep up my analog skills I've been posting progress to illustrating a short fairy tale. However, it seems to be larger than I anticipated, so I guess I'll start posting the progress to this thread rather than the works in progress thread:

Here is the progress on the characters so far:

Towards the end of the story, the beetle encounters some girls in a rowboat. I borrowed from some anime sources for the character faces, and tried a different coloring technique in photoshop. Earlier I had done a tonal layer and then a color layer underneath, but here I just applied the colors as flats then added highlights and shadows.
Hmm. I would have liked a more distorted horse with caricatures I guess. I tried a few horse designs, and a thicker horse closer to a clydesdale seems to have won out here.
Phewww...dude, you´re studying your ass off...nice works.
Gotta do that to...haha....A LOT!!
Laterrrr...
thanks ghoulio I'll try to keep progressing my work..
So here's some movement sequence series studies based on some martial arts stuff:
So here's some more figures based on some grapling arts.
I felt that less detail actually helps to see the positions of the figures more clearly here. Also, I've recently discovered watercolor pencils - it seems to have a nice finish but doesn't necessarily scan very well.
I'd like to push my detail and quality further rather than just drawing random figures all the time. So I guess the challenge with these guys was to see the perspective and interplay of arms and legs without getting confused.
haha..very interesting positions you got there.
nice job in blocking out the character for study.

Animation is hard work, BUT.....
It's also tedious....
thanks for stopping by WaiLik
I've been having trouble staying focused with work and all. It seems that its easy to get distracted when I'm working and only have a few hours to myself each day. I find that I'm doing lots of figure poses rather than investing the time and energy into creating more detailed artwork such as fully detailed characters. Maybe it just goes with the animation mentality?
So here's a character exploration I was playing with recently...
Here i was trying to get away from linework and trying to describe the form using more light, shadow and colored edge blending...
I usually don't do to much in the area of environment objects and stuff, but here is a break away... It was meant to be an exploration of different alien plant ideas.
here are some random thumbnails I've been working with to try to develop some objects and weapons. I find that I really need attention in this area because I seem to have a weakness in detailing...
Hey man, its been a while. Loving the character designs, try doing some digital studies from life or even photos. Would like to see more of your character development as well.
Pretty Nice Book
it just feels like you can do a lot better than some of your stuff
You got a nice sketch book. I like the way you take on the perspective when you draw. I think you may want to put more details when you draw, so the drawings look more interesting.
